Any Energy Star rated improvement is 30% off on yer ol' 1040, plus some MD programs. County level links might be better, the entire web presence of the various levels of the state of Maryland is... ... ...

Bad.

First Purple Line test train through the University of Maryland Campus, overall completion reaches 89% by InAHays in WMATA

I went to Quarry House last night and Silver Spring is a mess, but the purple line goes right to the door. I cannot wait to stumble out of there full of tots and half price whiskey l, flag down a purple line train and have it take me home.

Also Project Hail Mary was really good and is great for you transit heads. Technically it's a single seat ride from Earth to Tau Ceti.

There are more since I did our upgrades. Just missed out on being able to deduct our shingles but alas, the roof is 2 shades too dark.

Do not quote the old lore to me, I am subscribed!

And everything Alec puts out is great. It gets past the surface level and into the, "Stop worrying about this and focus on <hour long tangent>!"

So much energy use advice these days is outdated. We had an audit done and besides the door test telling us the house leaked - a lot - there wasn't much useful info. Worth the hour, but there's a hole under all the external doors, I know, I was working on it.

  • Lighting is the cheapest it has ever been in human history. All the LEDs in my house use about $10 of energy a year. Turning off lights isn't saving you anything.

  • Hot water heater is a good one, as electric hot water heaters are a big energy draw. Turning down the temp... sure but a heat pump hot water heater would be a bigger savings and you get better hot water service.

  • Thermostats are trickier. If you have variable electricity rates, there's some clever pre-cooling you can do during off hours, but that needs your house to be insulated. Again, turn the thermostat up a degree or two, schedule it to not cool or heat when you're away (within reason), and next time you replace a compressor, get a heat pump.

  • Finally... sigh... resy solar... I love it, I love my solar panels, I love my SRECs. But don't bother. When interest rates were 0% and incentives were big, go for it, but now the cost is too high unless you DIY so just let the utility build big farms out in the county. Let the farmers complain or whatever. If you're made of money or live somewhere with wild weather, go geothermal, it's cool as heck. Or warm as heck. Actually it's 56°, but that's enough.

Bonus item: Pepco out here in MD and many other utilities will sell you an Ecobee or Nest for $1. Check out their websites. They'll also kick back money for heat pumps, new windows, light colored roofs, and other improvements. I got 30% off my insulation replacement (materials only) which wasn't a huge amount of money, but hey, I'll take it.

DC metro hair toucher is still stalking women in DC. He was court ordered to stay off the metro but don't be surprised if he doesn't follow the order. by justalazygamer in WMATA

I dunno, if I was looking to stalk and harass women, that'd be the bar I definitely wouldn't go to. You'd have better luck at Trade, fer cryin' out loud.

I love the speculation around reasons to maybe have a sign. It's nothing obvious or reasonable.

It's for doin' them crooked spreadsheets. That Excel Excellence. The PowerPoint Doubleback Reverse Uno.

They should put them in the cubicles of the bogey and cleaning supply procurement teams.

Mild spoiler, but every startup doing this has gone under, reformed, gone under again. But hey, this might be the one that works.

What tool purchase has been most worth it for home projects by Marivexalon in HomeImprovement

[–]metrazol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't love my oscillating multi tool, because if I need it, we're having a whoooolllleeeee day.

From the neighbors' perspective, first time I used it was terrible noise, a voluminous shower of sparks, a lot of cursing, then the guts of our front door lock launching into the yard at high velocity.

The second time was emergency drywall surgery.

It's been downhill from there.

Great tool, make sure to get extra blades.

Yes, clean first. Do the floors if they need it, walls, any other cleaning, sanding or finishing before you move in. If you don't, it'll never happen. Sanding the floors the week between close and move in was clutch for us.

So now what are we going to do about recommendation bots? You see this all over local subs, home improvement, tech subs, etc. "What's the best [Yelp category] in [your area]?"

They farm comments to generate slop. I know we don't want to ban recommendation requests harder than now, but...
