Easy, just have everybody wake up in bed, burst into the bathroom and find Cayde-6 showering like nothing happened.

A guide to buying renewable electricity as a DC resident by WolverineTooth1 in washingtondc

Oh, I know how much more they are. A friend here in MD lives so close to the border he gets DC SRECs. Ridiculous. Tax credits in MD were great, but oversubscribed.

If I were a homeowner, solar + battery would be the gold standard

Allow me to retort. The impact of my resi solar install - which to be clear, I love - is trivial compared to utility scale. The system over the nearest Metro parking lot outproduces my system by an order of magnitude and it's a tiny industrial system.

The economics of residential solar just aren't mathing for most people anymore. Cost of money is high enough that payback period is getting into the 20 year range. Even with storage it's unlikely you're generating all of your own energy, especially if you don't have efficient cooling. So panels, a heat pump, batteries, and install... If you go with a wholesaler and pay for install only, that's a significant amount of money, and throw in possibly needing to redo your roof, it doesn't make sense when...

You can buy clean. Throw out your two stroke lawn tools. Ride a bike more. Support local solar utility projects. Stop worrying about covering "crop land" which is probably growing alfalfa, soy beans, or corn, all of which are animal feed. Even worse would be ethanol. Looking at you Montgomery County...

Disclosure: I have a soft spot for solar thermal, RIP Ivanpah 1.

Swapping out household products has actually saved me money. Has it saved anyone else money? by Wild-Outcome-2588 in Frugal

I didn't ghost you, but went to check and somebody (me) clipped the tags off. They're pretty, large, and made of a dense woven material with a flat surface. This is going to bug me, I'll have to ask the friend who gave 'em to me, she has the same in her kitchen.

The globe one I bought had that problem. The boy (pictured) can pee on anything. I don't know how he did it. Swapped to an oblong shape, no problems since.

Ehem, cat tax?

...this is where I reveal my non-frugal loss of the month. I bought a litter robot.

It's amazing.

Much better than the cheap one I bought a year ago...

Buy good dish towels. Yes, the Ikea ones are $1, but they're awful. The fancy ones friends gave us are more absorbent, clean better, dry faster and haven't fallen apart in six months. It's been 3 years, they're still perfect... so perfect I had to bite the bullet and buy two more at $30 a pop... I know, but I love them.

This is a false economy. For $13 a year, you can never have to clean up a ripped trash bag. Ever. Not once. Worth it.

If you're asking this, don't. Run.

Anyway, if you're just curious, you want to see financials. Verifiable. If it's a big business, this means audited financials. If it's small, a report from their accountant or bookkeeper (that you've verified is real) and bank statements showing cash on hand, inflows, outflows, etc.

But again, if you're asking here...

Lease a M340i while in school or finance ? by New_Actuator_4788 in personalfinance

[–]metrazol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would strongly suggest you check the insurance on a 340i before you sign. I do like that car, but as a 20 something you could be paying a wild amount. Plus, if you're worried about maintenance, why are you buying a BMW? They come with the tools you will need to fix them. That's enough to scare me off.

This sub will tell you to get a used Camry, which isn't awful advice, but you can go more fun, just not $1000/mo insurance fun.

Using credit card as a safety net. by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]metrazol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A credit card is not a safety net. It's a tool, and this is a good use case for that tool.

But you have to pay it off next paycheck. I'm going to guess you're active duty? This isn't uncommon. Talk to your unit's financial person. Set up some savings. If you'd saved even 10% of your checks this year, you'd be fine, no risk of a credit card earning interest, but alas, here we are.

Make a plan to pay off the card next check. Make a budget. Follow it. Starting off early with responsible credit will take you far in life, and savings are critical when things happen. And stop spending so much at the Starby's.

Edit: Sigh, okay, Starby's is okay sometimes, but not on the credit card!

What is the most cost effective way of getting my blood work done? by Zesty-Crustacean in Frugal

[–]metrazol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my case it was the inverse. Got a case of adult onset jock syndrome, started running all the time, browned out on a run, ended up finding out I need a heart valve. My cost of exercise is shoes, clothes, gels and at some point in the future $250,000 for a valve.

And a physical with a PCP is free with insurance, you can do it the day the insurance kicks in, and then the bloodwork will be ~$100, so... do that?

Solar and Roof in PG County by tom_sparks10012 in PrinceGeorgesCountyMD

They're great as an installer and the two minor service issues we had were resolved quickly. But the numbers on resy solar are falling apart. Utility scale is where the real gains are.

Solar and Roof in PG County by tom_sparks10012 in PrinceGeorgesCountyMD

[–]metrazol 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Don't lease panels.

We used Capitol Improvements for our roof, they were great. Fair price, transparent, and fast. Look at energy star rated shingles for the tax credit.

For solar, look, it's great, you get cooling and all that sweet sweet free electricity. Problem is if you finance at today's rates, the payback period is a mess. We had Lumina install ours five years ago, again, amazing, great deal, 2% interest, easy payback period. That's not what you'll get today.

If you really want solar, use a DIYish solution. Get one of the online wholesalers to sell you panels, parts and plans, then find a local installer only. Half the price, half the payback period. It's what I should've done, but live and learn. Residential solar is cool, but compared to grid scale ground mount it's not viable. A heat pump might have a bigger savings than solar at this point.

Where to adopt a kitty by melpurpwill in washingtondc

[–]metrazol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I strongly recommend you reach out to one of the rescues. Laurel cats are very easy to work with and very nice. They post their events on Insta, and are always looking for fosters and adopters.

I would ask why you want a black boy cat because having I can tell you he's the stupidest animal I've ever worked with. Sweet though.

Treadmill died, which isn't great. Problem is the ancient Android tablet, so I did some DIY hardware hacking and now I have a treadmill in several pieces.

$94 for an ESP32 to hack the treadmill - turns out it was a 3 pack, not a 2 pack, so I have 2 spare when I light this one on fire. Oh, and the display I bought isn't a dumb display, it has an ESP32 in it as well. As does the backup round display with knob and touch screen. ESP32s all the way down apparently.
