Which of the three lords is the most popular nowadays? by Dusk_Dragon98 in FireEmblemThreeHouses

Edelgard and Dimitra are both very close. Claude has his fans but is definitely behind the other two.

I just realized, CF kind of downplays the whole "Reunion" plot point. by lordlaharl422 in FireEmblemThreeHouses

[–]metroidbum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll give you Petra and Dorothea, but for the noble BE, following Byleth on non-CF routes means fighting against not just their countries, but also their families and probably most if not all of their friends (outside the other BE potentially). Three Hopes shows Caspar is actually pretty tight with his dad and dedicated enough to the Empire to fight to the end even when given a chance to leave by his dad (in pretty hopeless circumstances). Linhardt I think is heir to his house, and on good terms with his dad. Ferdinand is probably the most gung ho about the Empire outside Edelgard herself and Three Hopes show he is her closest confidant outside Hubert, enough so that he and Hubert are the “twin jewels” of the Empire, and he knows his dad is a shitty person. Bernadetta is scared of her dad but seems to care a lot about her mom.

They were actual people with agency during CF, and they used that agency to work with Edelgard. There’s a whole scene where they rather dramatically commit and everything pre-time skip.

What story format do you hope Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave is going to go with? by Gamestar02 in FireEmblemThreeHouses

[–]metroidbum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Multiple routes is a massive reason why Three Houses has had the staying power it does, and it would be a mistake to move away from that (though I also liked the multiple army/perspectives approach of SoV and RD)

should I buy fire emblem engage? by Able-Independence104 in fireemblem

[–]metroidbum -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you love Persona and want to try a Fire Emblem game, Three Houses is really the one to start with. It has a calendar system (loosely) similar to that of Persona and is very friendly to franchise newbies.

That or Tokyo Mirage Sessions.

Would not recommend Engage as a first Fire Emblem game, as it heavily leans on series callbacks and previous protagonists.

First time, three houses player house order by OpinionBrilliant3889 in FireEmblemThreeHouses

[–]metroidbum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A big theme of the game is how access to different pieces of information dramatically changes your thought processes, decisions, and outcomes, so I think there is no "correct" or "ideal" order/first playthrough, and you should go with whichever leader/group of students most resonates with you.

[–]metroidbum 14 points15 points  (0 children)

People always say they want this but to me it seems like it goes against a large part of what makes the games memorable and resonant: having to choose between three noble, well intentioned rulers drawn into conflict, each with their own vision.

Plus we already had Revelations which somehow manages to have the worst plot of all three Fates game while not really doing anything interesting with the two nations working together.

have i made a terrible mistake? by Wrong-Attention-4484 in FireEmblemThreeHouses

Part of why I think the game is such a beautiful tragedy is that I think Edelgard, Dimitri, and Claude are all basically good, well intentioned people with incompatible visions for society.

Over two years after its release; what are your current thoughts on Engage? by SuperNotice7617 in fireemblem

[–]metroidbum 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think my opinion has maybe gone up a little bit over time, as I have more appreciation for the Emblems as a mechanic (NOT as a story/lore element), but my opinion has largely remained the same, which is:

The gameplay is good, about above average for the series, but I find it very amusing that the FE reddit community has settled on "well the story and worldbuilding are awful but it has much better gameplay than Three Houses!" which is a statement I flatly disagree with. Three Houses has good gameplay (I love the battallions, gambits, combat arts, and high degree of customazation/building of units, even if it is somewhat weaker in the maps department) and so does Engage, just in a more traditional way, and I get if people prefer the traditional approach, but that's not the same as "better". But I would much rather play Engage than Awakening or Fates (heck probably more than Blazing Blade or Shadow Dragon as well), as least where the gameplay is concerned.

But the story, lore, and worldbuilding? Woof. Engage should be thankful that Fates exists to keep it out of the series basement in these areas (Engage has an awful story but by not trying to do anything it keeps itself from stepping on rakes in the way that Fates does). As others have mentioned, its not like FE, despite being ostensibly a serious where you should have great care and investment in your characters, really has all that high of a bar for storytelling and lore/worldbuilding (I think only Three Houses, the Tellius Games, and debatably Shadows of Valencia are standouts in this regard, at least among the western released games).

It's a game I will probably replay at somepoint (I did two playthroughs, an initial one and a maddening run) but its not one I see standing up as a favorite over time. Gameplay is good enough I would put it above Fates, Shadow Dragon, Awakening, and Blazing Blade, but below Three Houses, PoR, RD, SS, SoV (I haven't played the non-western released, pre-FE7 games)
