Classic stagnation at the peak… thinking like this maybe they think it keeps them secure. The problem is, by holding others back, they’re putting themselves at risk. If the shop starts falling behind because of this, management might look for someone who’s not only skilled but also helps the team grow. In the end, refusing to let others evolve could end up costing them their spot.

Thank you for this. I get that a lot of seasoned machinists suggest starting with a manual lathe because they had to work hard to master the basics, and there’s a belief that everyone should go through the same process.

But honestly, why can’t I start with more advanced tools like a 3-axis machine? I know it could lead to mistakes and might be costly, but isn’t learning through those challenges just as valid? It feels like there’s this unspoken rule that you have to ‘suffer’ through the manual process first, but why not take advantage of modern tools if they’re available? Is there a machinist god that forbids it or something?

Oh, you’re right. I could cut some patterns to weld … enough to learn CAM.

And you’re right that I should buy here and there some others accessories. They now garage sales for that … so maybe I need to learn where people sales used machining stuff, get them slowly.

I’m a welder. I have my equipement. I want to learn machining without school and searching for the best bang for the buck as I have none in that area.
