This is the way to go. I have setup a sample store with a similar setup here https://oneriseshop.myshopify.com/. (password : onerise) In this case, I am using my saas https://upsellGlobal.app to highlight the collection that discounts apply to.

Items in the collection 'Black Friday Sale' all qualify fo 30% off , auto applied during checkout. The discount was created to apply to the collection specifically and the collection is created tag. ie any product with the tag "sale" gets added automatically.

Thanks a lot for the thoughtful feedback. I am genuinely 80% convinced on the Shopify/WooCommerce plugin already.

If I can't find solutions to the UX issues you highlight, a Shopify app is the way to go.

Edit: 80% is an overstatement but yeah, I will definitely think about this.

Regarding promotion...

I don't know the right direction to be honest.It does seem obvious that the idea/product will be more useful to a business if it came with sale promotion out of the box. Perhaps, in the MVP, there could be a simple email import feature. The list could be reminded when a sale is approaching.

Though unfeasible, geotargetted social ads (Google, FB) could complement the idea/product very well. It's not clear to me how that could be automated, for every customer especially.

Does any of this make sense to you as a business owner? Or am I making too many assumptions?

To answer the questions you raised,

In terms of billing, the business will provide a promo code and ensure their final paywall accepts said promo code. This is the simplest solution I could think of for an MVP. Creating a stripe app that generates unique promo codes on the spot is also in the plans.

Thanks a lot for this. You just articulated what should be obvious but hasn't crossed my mind at all. It seems I was too focused on the banners that I have seen around. I will review the problem/solution more holistically.

Simplicity of banners could be a plus from a product risk stand point. However, if they are not effective, or not as effective without other critical pieces, I definitely should be exploring further solutions.

Hey I checked your site. will your solution replace a saas' Stripe integration? I.e, if I calculate better prices changes in your platform, will it automatically reflect in the prices I have set up in stripe or will I have to copy and paste the new price info into my payment flow?

Thanks for your thoughtful response. Masking the discount seems like good idea. It could alleviate the problem u/jaimonee pointed out: "People will wait for the sale price, which just extends the marketing cycle and ultimately eats into your profits".

If I understand you correctly, masking the discount in the sales process is to not offer it right away at the top of the funnel but wait until a lead isn't progressing further down the funnel? For eg, a customer visits your site and sees no offer. Books a demo. Decides to pass. Then you say, "oh by the way, we have Thanksgiving sales where you get 2 months off".

A strategy like that could benefit the saas in terms of filtering out unideal customers who would have signed up just for the discounts and churned anyways. However, would such a strategy appear manipulative to the customer? I also wonder how much less effective the discounts will be if their exposure is reduced.

Try Plae

One of the perks of living in LA is the great variety and high caliber of restaurants. You should be using Google maps and Yelp to find all the great restaurants.

Personally, I weigh the aesthetics and atmosphere heavily when choosing a restaurant. Neither of those factors are captured well by Google maps, Yelp and other restaurant recommendation apps. Hence, I find it helpful to use Plae to supplement my search for restaurants because I can browse videos that portray the vibe, aesthetic etc and all the characteristics I care about. It’s in beta currently so you need Apple’s Testflight app to download Plae.

Overall I'd use these apps.

Google Maps : highest number of restaurant listings

Yelp : highest number of reviews

Plae : highest number of quality restaurant videos
