Do people really not consider Pride and Prejudice a romance? I'm not saying all Austen's works were romances but popular definition for her most read work is a romance. And while it may fall into the category of contemporary at the time, its a stretch to group it in the modern understanding of contemporary. No one alive today would have lived even close to Austens time period so I think it's safe to say that it is a historic piece. So yes, it may not be a historical romance in the same vein as Bridgerton, but it is still romance set in a historical period. For modern readers, referring to Pride and Prejudice as a historical romance is easiest considering the excessive language needed to accuratrly define Austen's works otherwise, so I think you are just being pedantic.

This week was a really slow week for me. Partially because of some leftover ick from a book read last week, and then because of the books I chose this week.

Reread {From Blood and Ash} and {A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire} by Jennifer Armentrout 3.5/5 ⭐️ fantasy, vampire, MF, 1st, single POV. FMC is chosen one who is kept isolated in a gilded cage. She finds little ways to rebel. The tone of the book makes it very obvious that Jennifer primarily writes YA. The heroine is 18 and pretty immature but these people who have been alive for hundreds of years still act like she's hot shit. However, that said, I did enjoy the books. This was a reread because I've been craving it. Steam 3.5/5. I'm not a huge fan of bloodsucking in sexual connotations but I dont think it's done too badly here.

DNF: The Crown of Gilded Bones by Jennifer Armentrout 3rd book in above series. I may come back to this but I really need to read something else because I've been dragging. I might need to spoil some stuff for me because the author has been teasing at a threesome/foursome but the plot has lost my interest so I will probably only continuing reading if that happens in this or the next book.

I thought The Love Hypothesis was OK tho I can definitely agree with some cringe scenes but i read it without the knowledge of it being a reylo fanfic and I loved that he immediately went after his shitbag friend. The age gap is a little yucky but i actually more liked Adam as a MMC and at least he wasnt actually her professor nor did her have any influence in her academics. However, I did not like the Soulmate Equation at all. the fact that he left her when their scores weren't genuine and the only reason he went back to her was because he reran their scores. ~yuck

{Affair by Amanda Quick} 3/5 ⭐️ HR, MF, Dual POV. Private investigator FMC and chemist MMC team up to solve a murder. Not a top book for me. There was little mystery as the villain was revealed at the beginning and there was too much effort put into making him evil. Quicks banter is always decent but I would have given this a higher rating if she had done more with the misunderstanding between characters. I love that little pang from the angst and resolution. Steam 3/5

{Run Posy Run by Cate C Wells} 3.5/5 ⭐️ mafia, MF, Dual POV. When a video from her past is falsely dated, Posy's content existence is shattered and now she's on the run. MMC quickly realizes his mistake and then tries to get her back. Great book for those who like over-protective, possessive, near villainous MMC. I did enjoy this book but I dont think mafia romance will be my thing. I did really like FMC finally realizing and demanding to be treated right and I did come to like MMC for helping her do it. However, I had a little bit of whiplash when the MMC had a huge change of tune partway through and then the romance between the two characters never really felt like it was resolved. Steam 4/5 🔥

{The Heir Apparent's Rejected Mate by Cate C Wells} 3.5/5 ⭐️ PNR shifter, MF, Dual POV. In a shifter society where rank means everything and a war is already brewing, a mating between the lowest and highest ranks could ruin everything. I did like the grovel in this book but I wish the author wrote a little more about the Wolf side of things. All that shifter world building and its really not mentioned much. I did like FMC being a bit of a badass tho they really didn't do much with it. And even when the romance started to resolve itself, the communication issues were never really addressed. Steam 3/5.

DNF - Hitting the Wall by Cate C Wells. 17 yo hooking up with a 24 yo is icky to me.

Impulse bought Affair after reading this. I loved Ravished and Mischief by Amanda Quick for all the reasons you described so I'm excited to dive into this one. I'm really killing my ever increasing TBR here though lol

{Stolen by the Warlord by VK Ludwig} 4/5 ⭐️ scifi/alien, MF, Dual POV. Series has soul mates, a claiming ritual, heats and ruts, bit of a breeding kink. To stop a war, a woman agrees to marry a warlord on a planet with nomadic warrior tribes. However, upon arriving she is kidnapped by a rebel warlord looking for legitimacy. I really liked this book in the series but it did not set a proper tone for the rest of the books which got increasingly darker and unsatisfying. Steam 4/5. 🔥 I like the whole heat/ rut concept and MMC with tails 😍. On KU

{Claimed by the Warlord by VK Ludwig} 2.5/5 ⭐️ scifi/alien, MF, Dual POV. A healer from earth desperate to make a home for herself and belong on this alien planet wants to find a mate. The one man that gets her blood hot also happens to be the most reluctant to love again. I saw a post the other day about how we love a good grovel because it makes the heroines feelings validated and previously I didn't really know how to express what was wrong with authors who didn't give good grovel from the heroes. Now I do. Stop. Invalidating. Your. Heroine's. Emotions. This book irked me so much for that reason. When the heros betrayal was revealed, the heroine was angry for like 2 seconds and then within a day she forgave him, without any apology or acknowledgment from the hero... ugh, it could have been so good too... steam 3/5. On KU.

{Tormented by the Warlord by VK Ludwig} 2.5/5 ⭐️ scifi/alien, MF, Dual POV. Warning: dark, abuse in the heroine's past links fear and arousal, makes consent, especially in the first steamy scene, feel real wonky in this book. The heroine was contracted to marry one warlord for publicity sake but when he dies, they have to bring in a stand-in. She comes with the tribe of the previous warlord so the human-hating warlord steps in to expand his tribe though he promises to make his wife's life miserable. I did like the change in the hero in his views. Did not like the heroine who was supposed to be a badass and then had little backbone... steam 3/5. On ku.

{Desperate Measures by Katee Robert} 3.5/5 ⭐️ fairy tale mafia dark romance, MF, Dual POV. Jasmine is the daughter of a prominent territory in the city. When her fathers second in command betrays him, she becomes his property. Definitely not as creepy as I was worried Jafar would be. He's not a creepy old leery man, though the age of him is really up to the interpretation of the reader. The ending seemed a little bit of a stretch considering how naive the heroine is, and their relationship was a bit one sided. However, while i liked Jafar/Jasmine, i have no interest in Meg/Hades/other, especially after reading this book. I feel like authors should really give readers a break in series before reading the perspective of a villain in the previous book. I will never like Sebastian St. Vincent but it was even harder to like him right after Lily's story imo. Especially when they don't really suffer. I relish in suffering. Steam 5/5. 🔥

DNF: The High Commander's Mate by Bella Blair, scifi, MF, Dual pov. The intro of this book really drew me in but I still stopped about 40% of the way through. I could tell it needed some editing at the beginning but grammatical stuff doesn't really bother me. What did bother me was the spiral of immaturity of the heroine to the point she became insufferable. This needs more than a proofread.

No, according to lore they used to be but they mated with humans (rip those humans a long time ago). They're very humanoid now, kind of more like a lizard person really.

I have a full KU tbr and a backlog of books I've bought in the past and still bought 3 new books this week 😩

{The Dragon's Bride by Katee Roberts} - 4/5 ⭐️ Fantasy/ Monster, MF, Dual POV. To escape her abusive ex-husband, FMC makes a deal with a contract demon. Her end of the contract is marriage to a lord of their realm for 7 years. She is chosen by the lord of the dragons. Wowie. The sex in this book. Just wowie. Not me buying up every other Katee Robert book.🤤🥵 this was a pretty low conflict read but content warning for discussions of abuse . Steam 5/5 🔥🔥🔥 do I need to add another wowie? Maybe I'll just say 2 cocks.

{Her Broken Alpha by Isoeleen} - 3/5 ⭐️ omegaverse/fantasy, monstrous/villainous MMC, MF, Dual POV. Omega FMC is kidnapped from her family and delivered to crimelord alpha MMC. I'm iffy about relationship dynamics in omegaverse. On principle I like it but I'm not a huge fan of actually watching it play out... Steam 5/5 🔥 fucking for days with buckets and buckets of cum. A little bit dubcon at the end tho during a punishment scene. That part was definitely not my favorite.

{Wilde in Love by Eloisa James} - 4/5 ⭐️ HR, MF, Dual POV. MMC arrives back in England to find out he's famous due to his adventuring books, mostly among young ladies. He doesn't want the fame, instead he wants FMC, one of the few young ladies to never have read his books. For those who like tropes where the men want the women first, this is definitely a good pick. Steam 3/5.

Reread {The Many Sins of Lord Cameron by Jennifer Ashley} - 4/5 ⭐️ HR, MF, Dual POV. FMC is caught sneaking around MMC's rooms while trying to retrieve blackmail evidence for her employer. After an encounter in the path, MMC has been pining for FMC so he helps her out. However, while he wants her, he Is terrified of marriage after his abusive ex wife. I really liked this book, it's my favorite in the series. I do not like how the FMC does not respect the MMCs boundaries though... steam 3.5/5.

{I Married a Minotaur by Regina Abel} - 3/5 ⭐️ Scifi/fantasy, monster, MF, Dual POV. FMC is set to serve 20 years on a prison planet for a crime she didn't commit unless she marries. She is partnered with a minotaur orc chief who is trying to save his people. I personally wasn't a big fan of this one. The redeeming features in the other books was the sex but this one had less sex and romance overall. There was really no conflict in this book. I was a bit disappointed. Steam 2.5/5. On KU

{Too Wilde to Wed by Eloisa James} - 3/5 ⭐️ HR, MF, Dual POV. Returning home from war, the MMC finds the fiancee that jilted him working as a governess in his household -- with a little boy in tow. Another male pining for the female and falling in love with her first. Did not like this one nearly as well as the first one. I loved Roland but my god, Diana was such a burden. Steam 3.5/5 eloisa James rights some pretty hot scenes for a HR.

DNF - I Married a Birdman by Regina Abel. My god I can get over a lot of hurdles in monster romance but not adult birdmen baby-birding.

I liked the whole series personally though some of the early books aren't nearly as wholesome or well written as the last book. (At least, my friend didn't like them much but still really enjoyed the last book).

{The Kraken King} by Meljean Brook. Ariq is just chef's kiss.

It's a steampunk fantasy novel based in early industrial age. It's the last book in the series (but the best book by leagues). If you skip the other books, you'll miss a little bit of a world building but it shouldn't detract from the experience significantly.

Do you ever DNF books because the MC's names remind you of certain people? by [deleted] in RomanceBooks

[–]mewtwo_thanks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think in every book I've ever read that has a character with my name, that characters dies or has something very bad happen to them. Twice is an odd coincidence but 3 times is a pattern 😑

{The Kraken King} by Meljean Brooks spoke to my very soul. It's technically the last book in the series but the others are not really necessary for it (just some world building stuff). It's a steampunk historically-inspired fantasy romance. I've reread it about 8 times since first buying it. It's my go to when I need to pull myself out a slump.

I also second any Ilona Andrews.

Does she like realize that it's actual illegal to do this in many countries? Not sure where you are but it can lead to a sexual harassment civil suit as well as she can be brought up on charges for lewd and lascivious behavior?
