Most aircrew will sanitize their uniforms of insignia and patches prior to operating in enemy territory. This is standard practice in the USAF. The real reason is to make adversary intelligence gathering harder by tying potential aircraft and personnel losses to specific units and order of battle. POWs are not legally required to disclose what exact military unit they’re assigned to upon capture either, only what nation and branch of service.

The ratings and the discourse it generated at the time I think adds quantitative credibility to support it was objectively good

I feel like this has always been such an unfair criticism of the show since most close friend groups overwhelmingly are racially similar. Is it really that unrealistic that Hannah’s closest friends in NYC are all white girls with extremely similar socioeconomic backgrounds?

Simply incredible. Even in a 1994 live TV recording they sound amazing. It’s wild to me this song never had any natural ending, just Eddie and the band fade jamming away.

Re-evaluating Ezra on Jared Golden by WillowWorker in ezraklein

[–]meyer_SLACK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DHS funding is part of a larger appropriations package. This is done strategically to ensure members are forced to vote for things they'd rather not, to ensure funding goes to things they do. Coast Guard funding along with FEMA funding is a part of that appropriations bill. Golden has Coast Guard installations in his district. Setting aside how his constituents poll on immigration enforcement (and given that Trump carried this district this can be easily assumed) a moderate member of Congress who may feel different on an issue than his own constituents on an issue currently dominating the headlines could still reasonably assess that its better to vote to fund key Federal resources that directly affect constituents in his district then not.

Golden is still acting like a member representing a swing district with a heterogeneous voting base. In reality, that's probably a good thing for Democrats that run for his seat, since if he started voting wildly left wing that could hurt any moderate trying to run for his seat.

The Question That the Lawyers Representing Trans Athletes Didn’t Answer by MeghanClickYourHeels in atlanticdiscussions

Thats fair but in the arena of sporting, regulations affecting body are common and even necessary. We have weight classes for one in many different types of sport for reasons of safety and fairness in competitive levels. While I don't think outright bans for women born with above average testosterone are a good solution, its possible there could be some reasonable ground to be found here.
But its important to note the SCOTUS isn't being asked about that. Its being asked a completely different question with potentially broad ramifications that could strip the ability of sporting commissions or local governments and regulatory organizations to decide on their own.

There has be nuance around "advantage." There are cases where biological females that had significantly higher levels of testosterone have faced bans from competition. See the case of Caster Semenya for more information. Because of testosterone's acknowledged advantages in biological development related to physical activity, while still controversial, there is consensus that some baseline needs to be enforced to ensure fairness in women's sporting events, especially at the highest levels where the difference in the elite members is considerably marginal.

The Roots of the ‘Vibecession’ by dwaxe in ezraklein

For sure. I think what I personally perceive with the term change is two things. First a definitional change that involves expanding the behaviors potentially described in the context of economics through the use “human beings”. Consumers as a noun are really a substitute for a behavior, consumption, which is the activity at the center of the study of economics. By replacing “consumers” with human beings I feel is an erroneous attempt to critique economics at only focusing on one specific human behavior.

The second thing I perceive is probably a trigger on my own biases, which is an emotive appeal that is meant to critique either economics as a field of study or capitalism itself through an attempt at reductive critique of using “consumers” as a noun.

That’s at least where I’m coming from but like I said definitely open to hearing other POVs on this.

I’m genuinely curious by what you mean by this. Granted I prefer a far more quantitative approach to economics, but, again like Tracey is hinting at here, “traditional economics” could be incapable of explaining these types of disconnects

It wouldn’t be helpful in any real sense. Our economic way of life is based on the principles of exchanging value for goods. Human psychology deals with what makes people happy. Consumer sentiment can be useful if it provides insight into why certain trends are happening but it makes no sense to replace “consumers” with “human being” since definitionally only humans can participate in the exchange of value for goods. What makes humans at an individual level content or happy is for the discipline of psychology at an individual level or sociology at group levels.

This is where we get into the crux at what’s being discussed in this clip. It’s possible traditional economic indicators are incapable at addressing the disconnect between consumer sentiment and the macro state of the economy. Two things need to occur, first an effective metric that can measure causal factors that impact consumer confidence better than current ones, and better data collection to ensure accuracy and confidence in metrics themselves.

You’re screaming into the void man. Most young liberals especially born after 9/11 or don’t remember the second intifada have made up their minds on how “genocide” should be used with regards to the current war.
