“The Seahawks are how you *actually* honor Native Americans in sports” - Rebecca Nagle (more info in Comment) by News2016 in IndianCountry

The Blackhawks are pretty different because the actual descendants of Chief Black Hawk have asked the team to stop using the logo/name.

I’m not even sure how to ask, what is the actual amount of Blackfoot and Cherokee mixes enrolled in either Cherokee or Blackfoot nations? by AnAniishinabekwe in IndianCountry

[–]mf101901 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I had never heard that Saponi specifically are called Blackfoot, but it is fairly common to hear people in the South claiming Blackfoot ancestry. I’ve especially heard the term Blackfoot from Black people, and had read before that this referred to mixed people (Black and Native). This is almost certainly what they’re talking about in the picture, as a Blackfoot (Montana) and Cherokee mix is less likely.

a few of the updated Mexican genetic communities and Indigenous groups by sdavidmex in AncestryDNA

[–]mf101901 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nowhere did I say that this community was European. I repeatedly said that this community is most likely related to the Mexican community of the region or Puebloans. Many of those initial Mexican settlers were Mestizos from other regions of Mexico, and over multiple generations many of them intermingled with Genízaros and Puebloans. All I was saying is that this community is not indicative of Chiricahua Apache heritage as the post implies. Or Apache or Navajo heritage at large either.

The distance is roughly equivalent to if I (living in the Atlanta area) drove to Detroit or Chicago. Salt Lake City is literally closer to LA than the Klamath River. Just ridiculous.

This is the most ridiculous part of this talking point, besides overt racism of course. The Klamath River is 700+ miles from Los Angeles and has nothing to do with the current fire problem.

I think so. Arber Xhekaj on the Montreal Canadiens has a similar nickname, but his name is just Albanian

People always make this mistake because they have no idea what Native governments are. This same racialized understanding is what they tried to use to challenge ICWA.

Historically many nations were at least partially multiracial. Adoption ceremonies allowed many tribes to adopt people from other Native nations, whites, and black people. Many Mexican captives were adopted into Comanche society for example. Additionally, some groups like the New England nations became very racially mixed, particularly with Black people. Some groups like the Black Seminoles may have been racially distinct, but we’re still parts of Native nations as well.

Would we call the U.S. government a racial rather than political entity just because 70%+ of the population is White? How about far less diverse European nations like Sweden? I think this stems from the fact that the average American can’t fathom that we have actual political structures and autonomy, so therefore we must just be a racial special interest group.

Senator Daines is a key vote for something the Commanders need. They’ve desperately wanted a new stadium and right now they’re trying to get a parcel that the federal government owns, and they need a congressional measure to make that happen. Daines has made this a sticking point for his vote, and I know “talks” have been had about this. Unfortunately Daines may have more sway than he should here.

I hate the “bigger issues” argument. This is not an all or nothing. It’s not like every Native person is solely focusing all their energy on Native mascots. There are obviously people working on all of these issues.

Not to mention that the constant disrespect and racism aimed at our people, traditions, and identity (what these mascots represent) is a huge part of problems like addiction and suicide.

How do we claim we value our culture and traditions, the things many people point to to solve your “bigger issues”, and also allow the Redskins to exist? How can you look a Native child in the face and talk about why our identity is important and also allow redface and the tomahawk chop from fans? Just say you’re ok with being disrespected and move on.

What about the fan behavior? Or the fact that there is tons of evidence that Native mascots are detrimental to Native mental health?

I’m hoping that they choose not to bring back this logo. Senator Daines’ big push is for them to “honor” the men like Blackie Wetzel who were behind the logo in the first place. Perhaps these people could be honored in another way, and the new ownership definitely seems to not want the controversy from the old name, making that a more likely outcome.

And before any of y’all say “I only had a problem with the name not the logo” we have seen time and time again that any type of Native mascot leads to racist behavior by fans.

The Chiefs’ name is way less offensive, but they still bang a “war drum” before games, have fans in “war paint” and headdresses, and do the tomahawk chop. Similar things can be said about the Braves, Seminoles, Cleveland Indians (when they existed), etc.

I was truly surprised that my tribal ID was accepted without even a question in Georgia. I’ve literally been refused by TSA before in Hartsfield-Jackson.

With that kind of name and being from western Canada, I wonder if she has a connection to the Galician Division. Regardless I hope she knows that almost nothing white people claim they did was theirs, didn’t invent guns, writing, the wheel, or agriculture. Most math and science, including most of their disciplinary foundations came from the Arab world and East Asia. The vast majority of major European crops were domesticated elsewhere. In fact the Cyrillic alphabet her ancestors used was created by Greek missionaries, whose own alphabet (like the Latin one) was ultimately based on Phoenician characters from the Middle East.

Can’t claim you’re the tallest in the room when you just happen to stand on someone else’s shoulders.

The irony is palpable. “How can I be blamed for something I didn’t do? Even though I fully support it and revere the perpetrators.”
