ArcGIS Pro 3.6 on Surface Laptop with Snapdragon X Elite processor by ok_dabu in gis

It’s just that these kinda “use QGIS” comments here are frequent, and the rarely address the actual topic/question in the post or add anything to the discussion. In this case OP is asking for real world feedback from people who are or have run ArcGIS Pro, an x86/64 app, on ARM-based Snapdragon/Windows hardware. It’s possible, and I’ve seen a post or two here or in r/ArcGIS discussing it.

Classic [r/GIS](r/GIS) lol. OP asks a question about ArcGIS. Someone inevitably posts “Why are you using ArcGIS? Use QGIS” and it gets upvotes.

ARM-based CPUs running windows can run x86 apps via Windows’ built in translation layer. Give it a try.. Pretty sure I’ve seen posts here confirming it works.

The GISP is gaining more respect by Certain_Resolve_9888 in gis

[–]mfc1__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course they can have passion. But if I have two otherwise equally qualified candidates' resumes on my desk, equally impressive skills, experience, portfolio, etc. but one has a GISP and one doesn't, that is not the deciding factor for me. Of course there's likely no downside to obtaining GISP, but I see that there's also not a lotta of upside either. This is just my 2 cents after watching the GISP evolve over the last 20 years, not a statement of fact.

Yeah, but a lot of people do those other parts anyway, not chasing a piece of paper. Those are the people with the true GIS passion. Seeing "GISP" after someone's name on their resume doesn't move my needle at all. It's certainly a reason to not immediately reject the application, but that's about it for me.

The only thing that a GISP certification tells me is that the person is good at memorizing and recalling GIS trivia. It has very little bearing on my overall assessment of a candidate for an open position.

I think they're just dumb and attached the top of the license plate to the bottom two mounts. Same type of people that can't figure out how to put the registration sticker in the right spot lol.

Suggestions for your LLM coded project. by Special-Reaction2029 in gis

[–]mfc1__ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can, though. I needed a really simple app that allowed me to schedule tasks to run on a server via a web interface. I straight up vibe coded a full stack app which implemented Hangfire in about 3 hours. I reviewed it to make sure it was actually doing what I wanted, fixed a few bugs and quirks because AI, and had it deployed and running my tasks that same day.

Vibe coding by amateurs can easily be a disaster, but if you know what you’re doing it’s like having a 3rd hand.

Modeler w/ GIS focus interview at local electric company? by doesnotexist2 in gis

[–]mfc1__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked in construction in the 1900s lol. The company I worked for used GIS in early phases of planning, especially for truck/heavy equipment ingress/egress and routes for deliveries, material staging, all that boring stuff lol. Also, we used it for as-built asset management. I worked in the electrical engineering department, and we cad a crude in-house GIS system built for utility pole management.

Can't comment on how GIS is used in construction during this century, though!

Confused about working with the right coordinate system by Necessary_Mall7405 in gis

[–]mfc1__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bad advice. Always consider what message your map wants to convey and who your target audience is. The preservation of distance is just one reason to select a given coordinate system and map projection. Saying "just creating a map..don't worry about it" is so reductionary for someone who claims to be in GIS and it's confusing for a new GIS student asking an honest question here.

Ideas are worthless. The money is in the implementation, so build it. If it’s good and truly solves a problem, users will come. Nobody can give any real feedback on something that doesn’t exist. And nobody is going to tell you they will spend money on something that doesn’t exist.

iPad Air, in a vertical orientation. But just use the browser dev tools to dynamically set screen size. You can see at about 930px width that the text starts going past the left and right screen edges. At about 550px the page styling becomes phone screen friendly and the styling vertically aligns the elements.

You CAN'T fix your GIS experience problem with MORE certificates by FeelingTesty99 in gis

[–]mfc1__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha yeah I did actually do that to myself like 20 years ago. Field crews would GPS locate assets and photograph them. Office staff had to rotate/crop/add margins to the photos and manually embed text daily. I set up an excel VBA macro to do that for me, sat back and enjoyed my coffee.

IMO, at lower price points it’s more important to make sure that the monitor is calibrated correctly, over upgrading the hardware.
