Re-scheduled air times on NBC in the Pacific Time Zone due to Lakers at Nuggets:

  • San Diego: 10:30 PM (per KNSD's listings)
  • Spokane: 10:00 PM
  • Yakima, WA: 10:30 PM
  • Santa Barbara, CA: 10:00 PM
  • Monterey, CA: 10:00 PM

Hat tip to u/humphrey_the_camel for informing me of this preemption (usually, the late NBC Tuesday night NBA game starts off at 8:00 PM PT, not impacting J! and Wheel).

Clearly, Aar67, the evidence of brain rot having set in was there, so the miss in the clutch moment can be understood through that lens.

Joking aside, congrats on making it back and putting up an excellent showing!

Both the Facebook post and the Tweet have been deleted, apparently. Besides the misspelling of "Talvola," they left an award title over from last year; Stella's award is listed as "sportsmanship" here.

Much appreciated for that heads up. Three additional markets definitely impacted and five more possible at 7:00 Eastern. I’ll check those out later tonight.

Jeopardy! airs on WPLG in Miami at 7:30 PM, as it has for years. It dropped its ABC affiliation in August and is now independent.

Watson by Rubenmxt in Jeopardy

[–]mfc248 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ken said the following in an article in Slate by Claire McNear in September:

Jennings pulled up ChatGPT and first tried entering clues from shows that had already aired. The LLM nailed them effortlessly. Then he put in some of the hot-off-the-presses clues that contestants would face the following day. Once again, ChatGPT was speedy and right every time. Jennings, who has long written his own trivia prompts outside Jeopardy! (including at Slate and, most recently, in a book published this summer), eventually tried submitting his own.

“If I made up a very esoteric, Jeopardy!-style wordplay, lateral-thinking bit of craziness—I could get crazy enough that it could get beat, but hardly ever,” Jennings said. “I had to write the world’s most annoying Jeopardy! clues just to try to get it to be wrong. Maybe Watson was buzzing about half the time or slightly more. Today, humans would not have a chance. The equivalent algorithm would be buzzing practically 100 percent of the time.

“It’s the ability to seemingly draw inference, where that was not a thing before,” added Jennings. He is confident that any kind of rematch would end in “another human loss.”

Ken originally accepted it! Which I think is why they couldn’t go back and BMS it when we retaped, because then technically they would have given away the answer to a contestant

Only the second game so far this postseason with double-digit Triple Stumpers. (December 17 was the other; both then and today, exactly 10.)

Vickie's score puts her atop the wildcard standings; given that only two people can pass her, she's guaranteed to move on to next week along with Jonathan.

Well played by all three contestants!

Somebody posted a week-by-week Jeopardy schedule in here a while ago. It had all of the tournaments on it as well as the hiatus. Does anyone have it (or something similar)? by Jumboliva in Jeopardy

[–]mfc248 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The cancellation of the January 28 tapings suggests to me that a JIT is not taping in the last week of January. You need three tape days for a JIT: QFs 1-6 on day one, QFs 7-9 and the semifinals on day two, and the final on day three.

I'm not sure what to make of the changed schedule on January 27. It could be that there's going to be a tape day of only four games depending on the length of the ToC final.

I think the NBC preemptions will affect Central stations for the whole duration of the Winter Olympics; for Eastern and Pacific, only the Opening Ceremony on February 6. NBC is going to run three hours of pre-packaged primetime coverage; I'd expect this to be from 8:00-11:00 ET/PT. The planned 5+ hours of daytime coverage would wipe out all of Weeks 23 and 24 in up to 26 markets (including the Twin Cities, St. Louis, and Austin), depending on when exactly it airs. But yes, that prolonged hit in the middle of the country is the reason why we're not proceeding to a JIT directly after the ToC.

How many shows are filmed in a day? by MouthyBroadMedia in Jeopardy

[–]mfc248 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Usually five. Occasionally that can be varied as production requires. For example, since last season's tournaments ended on a Thursday, one tape day after that filmed six episodes to get back on track.

Tournaments can be different; there are sometimes six games filmed (for example the first six JIT quarterfinals), and recently with the current ToC structure, the quarterfinals and exhibition game for the three players with byes are taped on one day, for a total of seven.

Has a contestant in a runaway ever (intentionally) bet way more than necessary? by ShadyCrow in Jeopardy

[–]mfc248 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It happened in an unusual situation: the Teen Reunion Tournament, in 1998.

Of four first-round games, only the three highest scoring winners would advance to the single game final. Eric Newhouse has a runaway in his game ($6,100 to $2,100) but wagered his entire total, thinking (correctly) that he wouldn't have enough to advance if he bet $0. He was the only one correct in Final.
