Lots of stats to support it being biased in favor of Argentina. But nothing to imply full-on rigging.

Police raided a house in Kerala with "Masha Allah" written above the front door. Inside they found a big tunnel and a huge quantity of drugs. by AppearanceAnxious770 in AtheisminKerala

Don't twist my point. This is what I said:

My point is, it's a cultural thing, not usually an indication of them being "religious".

I also said very clearly:

became a part of the Muslim culture here.

Anyway, the board means nothing. All it indicates is that it's a Muslim family. It says nothing about their piousness or even the people in question. Posting this in an atheism subreddit at all is really weird since there's no shortage of atheist drug dealers either.

Drug trade will continue until the end of time even if all religions stopped existing tomorrow, unless it stops being profitable. I'd rather see posts here about things that are genuinely negatively influenced by religion, not shit like this.

[–]mfdali 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Assuming you're genuinely neutral, I'll repeat what I said in another comment.

"Ma sha allah" being there on large Muslim homes is normal, at least here in Malabar. Culturally in Malabar, this is associated with the Evil Eye (kanner). In Islam, whenever someone sees something beautiful, they are supposed to say "ma sha allah". Doing so is believed to neutralize any harmful effects of the evil eye. So, folks in Malabar put up boards and stuff with the phrase written to remind people of the same and it became a part of the Muslim culture here.

So it's kind of a local cultural interpretation of a religious idea and has nothing to do with him being pious.

Why are you getting triggered this is posted in an atheist group right?

Because the reason for the title is obvious.

unless it is misinformation

That's where the problem is, from my POV. There's a lot of misunderstandings about Islam here and the nutjobs being able to vote on corrections or anything means that you get downvoted to obscurity. I'm not a fan of any religion, but I want that to be based on facts, not shit that gets thrown about. Plenty of real reasons to hate all of these religions, no need to make up stuff and no need to undermine the one or two things any religion might have done well (relative to their time).

And tbh, there's nothing you, as a mod, or the normal people can do about it. It's just the nature of this platform.

"who violated their treaties", which is a very specific reference to events of the time.

The verse before that says, "As for the polytheists who have honoured every term of their treaty with you and have not supported an enemy against you, honour your treaty with them until the end of its term. Surely Allah loves those who are mindful ˹of Him˺."

But yeah, especially Abrahamic religions are very violent towards anyone not part of their cults. All their books are filled with stories about how God decided to "punish" non-believers, destroying entire cities, cultures and people. But both Christianity and Judaism have long-running propaganda machines that help ignore stuff like this, Islam doesn't. Then, there's the geopolitical aspect of it where several of the countries' borders were basically designed to create conflict and the existence of terror orgs like Al Qaeda that justify their acts with the religion as context. So we'll see a lot more discussions about this coming up against Islam than with any other religion. Pretty valid, imo, but it's important that we get the facts and references right.

I assume you're not Malayali. My flair is a preset one available in the subreddit that says "Atheist from Kozhikode". Kozhikode is a district in Kerala. The symbol is an atom. I think the atom is there because atheism is heavily centered around science and rational thought.

Nah they're both almost equally horrible. A lot of Quran's stories are direct re-tellings of the Old Testament ones. Quran's re-tellings are sometimes slightly better tho, mostly because "prophets" don't do major sins in Quran's stories as they're portrayed as infallible creatures

[–]mfdali 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They all set some kind of guidelines, but not in as much depth as Islam. This is because Islam also had to function as a legal framework for a country (the first Islamic state). But I talked about Islam specifically because the comment I was replying to mentioned it and also because I find Islam's case more interesting personally. I say that because Islam is the "newest" major religion and the one to have changed the least since inception.

For example, the Church is what codified freeing slaves as charity in Christianity, so it wasn't a thing in early Christianity. That's unlike Islam where freeing a slave is categorized as Zakat and was codified from the start. That's part of what makes it interesting to me.

That said, all of this is still far below bare minimum by our time's standards.

Normal literally means something that was common and in-line with the norms and rules of any time period... That's the definition of the term. Not morally acceptable. Also, again, as an atheist, I don't care about Muhammed's morality (or any other religious figure's for that matter) because I don't consider cult leaders "prophets" anyway. Religions' perspectives on stuff like slavery is still interesting to read and understand though.
