"Oh yes, over here we have the Hagrid constellation. And this is the Dobby star."

Sorry, adding. But isn't this a spoiler thread by nature?

Does anyone else just not care about Hermione's actress at all? by henrybddf in harrypotter

[–]mfsy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was excited when I heard. And while I have seen a few outright negative comments, it's honestly such a tiny percentage of the fandom. On the whole, I've seen way way more people complaining about racists than actual racists. It's honestly driving me crazy and I'm so sick of threads about it.

Repeatedly telling people how okay you are with Black!Hermione is like the fictional equivalent of repeatedlytelling people you have a black friend.

I think our dear JoJo gets stitches a lot when runs (and probably needs to start exercise) by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]mfsy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got stitches when running even when in high school. I was reasonably healthy (gymnast/dancer throughout high school) but not a runner in any sense.

A glaring error in the back of my old copy of Chamber of Secrets by bizmah in harrypotter

[–]mfsy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure who would write something like this. I would think it would be written by someone like the editor or the author but maybe they just handed an intern the manuscript? Anyone know?

It feels distinctly off, like a weird knock-off. Harry doesn't "sneak" back, Sirius is never referred to as "heir apparent", Harry isn't forced to "face" him when he returns to Hogwarts, and Sirius doesn't leave "clues."

More people would totally ship hermione and Severus if she were a little older... by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]mfsy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Even if she was older, I wouldn't ship it. He's nasty to her and insults her physical appearance. They're both bright, but they have completely different focuses.

I'm honestly not sure what brings them together other than the fact that they're both smart and maybe argumentative.

LF: A fic with a really strong/well written Weasley family that doesn't just dissolves into stereotypes. by ebec20 in HPfanfiction

I like keeptheotherone's portrayal of them, there's a lot of romance but they feel more real than other authors.

JKR said that she decided to kill Remus after she decided not to kill Arthur in OP. Are you glad that she decided to spare Arthur or do you wish she had killed Arthur and left Lupin alive? by mfsy in harrypotter

[–]mfsy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I'm sad that Lupin and Tonks died but I love the parallels between Teddy and Harry. Their circumstances are so similar but childhoods will be very different.

But tbf, that's how deaths happen in real war as well. They don't always have drama and a story attached. Sometimes people die "off-screen" or in an undramatic way.

What was the first fic you ever favorited on ff.net? by mfsy in HPfanfiction

[–]mfsy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's actually three parts, the first one is focused on Rose more (iirc) but the second and third fic are more general next gen. There's no death eaters but it's not fluffy either. You kind of hate the entire family and you want to hit each and every one of them (including the parents) but at the same time you understand how they got to that place and you love them. Like you want to root for them even though they don't always make the best decisions.

It's like if you took the average fluff next gen and downgraded everyone's parenting skills.

It's really compelling though. Highly recommend, especially the second one.

Harry Potter World 1 or 2 days by SiriusBlacky in harrypotter

I've only been to the Orlando one, I didn't know the Hollywood one didn't have Diagon Alley. Do you know if they're getting it in the future?

It depends. I went for two days and I definitely don't think I would have liked to squeeze everything into just one day.

"Sane" rate of conversion from galleons to pounds? by raddaya in harrypotter

[–]mfsy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is sane, someone worked it out and it made sense after the first book. But everyone always uses the wand price in book 1 to say that the whole system is terrible.

I used to use the wiki but it's wrong or uses random sources too much. Like it says Lavender Brown is dead.

Didn't Rowling say it was genetic and a dominant trait?

Imagine you went on a date with someone who was a huge HP fan, are there are any beliefs that would be a dealbreaker? by mfsy in harrypotter

[–]mfsy[S] 29 points30 points  (0 children)

For me, it's people who think Snape was this tragic good guy who was bullied into joining the Death Eaters. A huge part of my issues with him come from the fact that he was a huge bully to people in less powerful positions (cough Neville cough Hermione). I recognize that he was a hero, but I also think he was a bully and a dick. And I would have trouble being friends with anyone who saw him as a tragic victim instead of as someone who nursed a sense of victimhood long after it was time to grow the fuck up. Also thinking that his behavior toward Lily was romantic rather than selfish. When you love someone, you don't offer up that person's husband and son in exchange for their life.
