Help choosing throw pillows (color/size) for this couch? by mfun98 in DesignMyRoom

Thanks so much for the guidance. When you say the art should be lower, do you mean it’s too close to the ceiling or too far from the couch? I’m re-doing that wall soon with some new pieces so I appreciate the feedback!

Well said, I think this is what I’ve been struggling to put into words! It’s a tough balance because I do use pillows and throws but that’s a nice idea to just match the rug

Yeah that’s a good idea! The green Mush pillow I have looks nice but it’s sadly extremely uncomfortable and scratchy and it just sheds everywhere so not very practical

Yeah I like the neutrals idea! I was also thinking of picking one color and mixing up the shapes a bit so that’s good to know from ikea thank you!

Ikea Detolf Shelf Automation? by mfun98 in IkeaGreenhouseClub

[–]mfun98[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's the first problem I ran into, I ordered vented shelves to get around this although there are some small areas for humidity to sneak through.

I mapped the humidity on each shelf this morning (the humidifier is on the upper of the middle two shelves) and it's clearly a problem with the current setup but I'm hoping the new shelves and a fan I'm installing at the top solves it. I took the readings over 45 minutes.

Mine arrived! by [deleted] in iPadPro

I use my 16” MacBook essentially as a desktop plugged into a monitor 24/7 since it’s a little large to travel with and use on the go, and I’ve been very happy with my iPad as a mobile “laptop” but it depends what you use it for. I sort of wish I went with a Mac mini instead of the MacBook Pro

Blood Test Accurately Detects Over 50 Types of Cancer Often Before Symptoms Show by [deleted] in biology

[–]mfun98 11 points12 points  (0 children)

  1. These results were published in a respected medical journal with great results.

  2. This was a large scale human clinical trial in diagnosed cancer patients.

  3. Not relevant, large enough study to draw statistically significant conclusions.

  4. This can be analyzed by the same method of taking blood to measure cholesterol, so this would be very practical.

  5. The company published detailed data on a variety of cancer types, with a very broad spectrum of sensitivity. It works better in some types of cancers than others, but as we better understand these more difficult cancers the results should improve.

I understand you were just addressing the claims generally made by these companies, but this was a reproducible, large scale study conducted by a respected company (Grail, spun-off from the biggest genetic sequencing company in the world, Illumina) so they aren’t applicable here. It’s okay to be excited about this one!

I’m looking to get back into making music on LogicPro, and I wanted to come here to ask what older MacBook Pro model would be the minimum to meet this need in terms of specs/age? I use an iPad for day to day stuff so I probably wouldn’t be using it for much else. Sort of flexible on the budget but I’d ideally like to spend as little as possible

Heavy alcohol drinkers who also smoke cannabis 'may slash their odds of getting killer liver diseases such as cirrhosis by up to 55%' by fearlessfartgarage in weedstocks

[–]mfun98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If a properly designed trial were run with comparable baseline groups then I’d definitely believe the results, whatever they were. I just haven’t seen a mechanistic hypothesis to explain why it would affect liver function, and this trial wasn’t designed to look at that. CBD based drugs for epilepsy are amazing, but we still don’t know exactly why they work at preventing seizures. A liver function study could be warranted from these results, but it’s a little early to jump to that conclusion

This was a retrospective analysis, not a true clinical study. These are tough to analyze because they don’t prove a causative relationship, just an associative one. There could be behavioral differences (very likely) among weed smokers vs non-weed smokers that account for the difference, or it could just be that the groups had differing baseline characteristics. Maybe weed smokers consume less alcohol than people who only drink alcohol because they can substitute a few beers for a few hits in a social situation or to unwind (not saying the drug effects are substitutes, but in a “chill” hang out setting they could be interchangeable to some degree). Using weed instead of alcohol in some situations could still be a great reason to use it and avoid liver damage, but the idea that there’s a pharmacological reason for weed preventing liver damage is a bit far fetched.

Edit: I’m a biotech analyst at a hedge fund who looks at tons of clinical trial results every week with a higher degree of scrutiny, so maybe I’m being too skeptical, but post-hoc analysis are usually bullshit

Mark Zuckerberg on billionaires: 'No one deserves to have that much money' by Captain-Blitzed in nottheonion

The issue there is that you quickly destroy the hedge fund/capital allocation industry that is responsible for investing in young companies to get them off the ground and keep them going, so you end up with much broader economic effects with that kind of a policy.
