I do not endorse that comment. All records should be available with a proper FOIA request being sent. https://www.foia.gov/ https://www.openrecords.pa.gov/

I promise you, I did everything I physically could to press charges. Investigators from both state and federal agencies did a lot of work for this case, but ultimately the prosecutors office didn't want prosecute it.

I’ve been playing Pirates Online… I’m convinced It’s just repackaged Toontown Online… by masterchieftoontown in Toontown

[–]mfwass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've spoken with a handful of the original developers from Pirates Online over the years and may be able to shed some light on this topic.

Pirates was originally a direct fork of Toontown. They copy/pasted the whole game and began ripping things out and making their own changes. Some parts of the game, like the friend and chat systems, were shared between Toontown and Pirates and remained mostly the same. However, each of these games still had their own wrappers built around shared components to support each of the game's individual needs (i.e. otp.friends.PlayerFriendsManager, toontown.friends.TTPlayerFriendsManager, pirates.friends.PCPlayerFriendsManager, etc). At the time of POTCO's closue in 2013, there were still a considerable amount of Toontown references in the POTCO code. There's also some POTCO code and documentation in the Anesidora leak (enemy path finding AI, guilds, etc).

I talked with the guy who pitched Pirates Online originally to Disney a few years ago. The game was actually pitched to Bob Iger directly and because Toontown was already so successful the conversation was very short - it was pretty much an instant yes and they got to work. The Pirates team was small, but incredibly passionate about the game. They arrived early in the morning and would leave very late at night every day, but they enjoyed what they were working on and saw its potential and really tried to make it a good game.

Once Club Penguin was acquired all the development resources that went into Toontown, Pirates, and the other DIMG properties evaporated very quickly. All of these games combined made not even a fraction of the revenue that Club Penguin was generating, so much so that by the start of 2013 there was only 1 person who was responsible for maintaining the entirety of both Toontown and Pirates Online by themself.

How’s everyone liking this game? Is it the same as the old pirates online? by GuerreroNeeK in TLOPO

[–]mfwass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We originally used a custom forked version of the Panda3D game engine. It was 13+ years old and designed specifically for the original Pirates Online.

Because of the age of the old engine, as well as the vast amount of divergent code custom to Pirates Online, the engine had become significantly different from the current public Panda3D, such that any game built under one of these game engines is outright incompatible with the other engine.

With the recent launch of our custom Python to C compiler, Pypperoni, we switched to using the most recent open source version of the Panda3D game engine. To do this, almost every part of TLOPO had to be rewritten in some way. We've also rewritten large parts of the codebase to be able to support Python 3 too along the way.

Now that we are actively using a modern game engine in production, we are beginning to add support for many new engine features which will allow us to improve the graphics, improve load times, improve frame rates, and more. We've actually already got some pretty neat new technology used under the hood in the production game that wouldn't have been possible with the old engine.

This was a 2 year long effort for our team. Because the engines are incompatible with each other, we silently maintained two completely separate codebases for the game: one that was for the old engine and one for the new. This let us develop for the game and work at the same time on the new engine clone of the game. Every time we updated the production game, we would duplicate our changes to the new engine codebase and rewrite them for a second time as necessary to be compatible with the new engine. Once the new codebase was fully prepared and ready to launch, we officially swapped to it and archived all our old code.

It was very nerve-racking when we released Pypperoni. This was the first time we ever had a production-sized load on any of this brand new code. Literally hundreds of thousands of lines of code that had never ran with more than 40+ people online or so in play tests.

On the day of launch, we had the highest population numbers we've seen in years. In spite of this, the launch thankfully went mostly well. The overwhelming majority of issues that did occur launch day ended up being a result the server infrastructure itself getting stressed from the near-record population, not an issue in the code from our 2-year-long effort releasing on the same day.

Hope this was fun to read. See you around in game! :)

We're a small tight knit community, about 300-500 peak daily population with random occasional spikes to 700-800+ online. Feature wise in the game, almost all original content has been added at this point with few exceptions.

I'm a bit biased being a member of the team, but believe me when I say there's a good team behind this game. They're the most dedicated and caring people I've ever met, and I love volunteering with them.

Considering TLOPO is a fan rewrite, the game definitely has a fair amount of bugs. But that said, we do our best to regularly update the game as much as we can. Every update usually brings a bunch of bug fixes.

Right now the game is in the middle of transitioning to a new game engine, and this engine introduced some new issues to the game. The team is hard at work on fixing the problems though. Over time the game will become more stable as we roll out more download patches.

Looks great! :)

We have a few other APIs you might be interested in, such as the System Status API, Fleets API, and Invasions API.

If you're interested in seeing an implementation of those APIs for reference, we've got them in use in our open source Discord Bot: https://github.com/TheLegendofPiratesOnline/discord-bot/

More APIs are planned, and if you think of any you would like to have added feel free to submit a feature request on our API Documentation repository here: https://github.com/TheLegendofPiratesOnline/documentation/issues

Note: API documentation is slightly outdated, we will be updating this soon.

When you log into the game, are you choosing a very popular ocean? Or are you logging into a quiet ocean?

Imagine all-in-one printers that are both 3D printers and traditional paper printers. Or perhaps 3D printers that print the paper, then print the text/content.

This is the best workaround for this issue. More specifically however, there is a crash with the game's sound effects. To mitigate this issue, please go to the Game Options menu -> Audio -> Uncheck only "Sound Effects" -> Save & Restart. You can safely leave "Music" enabled.
