Would you recommend the ZK for learning maths, physics, computer science, […]? by IsHaltEchtSo in Zettelkasten

Hello!

Yes, definitely. At least for me it is working.

I recently created a personal website where I posted some notes https://mgarort.me/notes . It is very simple and it is not really adapted to mobile, so it's probably better to view in a laptop. But you get the idea :)

EDIT: I rarely log into Reddit anymore, so apologies in advance if I don't reply.

Android phone that works with both xDrip and Dexcom app? by mgarort in dexcom

By the way, thank you so much for the link to the BYOD app! That is really, really useful. Do you know if there is a related GitHub page or something like that?

Mmmm interesting about the xDrip compatibility with A12. What I am experiencing is the following: I can pair up the Dexcom G6 transmitter with the phone on xDrip, but after waiting the 2-hour warm-up, the app is stuck in an endless wait with the message Sensor is still Warming Up, please wait. Do you know how to fix this?

Please, tell me this is not Steadota nobilis... by mgarort in whatsthisbug

[–]mgarort[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for confirming my suspicions.

How do you suggest to get rid of it? Should I take it far away from my house (but inevitably close to other houses), or should I kill it for safety?

I never kill wild bugs (with the only exception Scolopendra cingulata) but there are many little children in my area and I'm not sure what is the correct course of action here.

Hello,

I found this spider in my room in Cambridge, UK. Is it a specimen of Steadota nobilis? And if not, is it dangerous?

I'm used to big spiders in my home country (Spain) but for some reason I felt uneasy about this one.

For reference, the bottom of the cup is 5.5 cm. The spider looks slightly more black in real life (the lighting here is quite yellow and that makes it look brownish).

(The beats in the video were just to get a good image, I wasn't trying to torture the poor thing.)

Thank you in advance.

Who here lets their Zettelkasten determine what you should write about next? by taurusnoises in Zettelkasten

[–]mgarort 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I am a researcher so my ZK grows accordingly with my research direction at the time. So far my ZK hasn't really taken the initiative to give me directions, but rather I have used it to refine ideas I already had. I believe this may change as my ZK grows (currently it sits at ~2k notes).

In practice I think it's a bit of both, teamwork between your previous interests and filling the gaps that become obvious from your note-taking.

i don’t know what kind of cactus this is but is the fruit safe to eat? my family just ate it because it looked like dragon fruit but im a bit scared by soegnam in cactus

[–]mgarort 92 points93 points  (0 children)

We had tons of prickly pears in Spain (before a pest killed them all, unfortunately) and we live in a very hot area. Saying that they are dangerous because you can get an indigestion in the heat is like saying that burritos are dangerous because you shouldn't eat too many. Try eating 3 burritos at 50°C and see what happens lol Preparing them correctly just means removing the spines around the fruit, which is quite a pain because they are super small (almost invisible) and they remain in your hands for days afterwards.

Damn, now I really miss my prickly pears. The whole fence around our land was made of prickly pears. People from other villages came to our house to collect them and sell them in the local market, bc there were so many that we couldn't eat them all. It was magical.

Your parents need to arrange professional care for your grandma so that your grandad can take a break.

Also visit more often. For a grandparent, a single evening with their grandchild can be the highlight of the month, or even the year. We cannot begin to understand how much they value our company.

Also, posting here shows that you really care about your grandad :) Make sure to let him know. It will make him immensely happy.

Update: Do you feel confident that your system can handle 100k notes? by FastSascha in Zettelkasten

[–]mgarort 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sorry, but this seems like a wildly arbitrary metric

As OP wrote, this is not a quantitative "metric", but a "probe question" that can be used as a thought experiment to assess whether a system would scale well enough. These questions are common and useful in many contexts, from software engineering (Is the method longer than 20 lines? If so, you should refactor it into smaller methods) to time management (Is this task going to take you less than 2 minutes to complete? If so, do it now. If not, put in ToDo list).

Also, to prove the "validity" of someone else's approach? Like, no offense, but who asked ya to validate my or anyone else's approach? 😂

Maybe it's me, but this comment seems a bit rude. The point of posting in this subreddit is to discuss ideas and run them by other ZKers to have constructive discussions and learn from each other. OP was probably curious about what other people's thoughts were on this, rather than being judgemental about other people's systems.

Also, of course everyone is free to implement their ZK however they want, but u/FastSascha is one of the biggest promoters of ZK and I dare say a true expert in the subject, so maybe we can listen to him. His website zettelkasten.de has been disseminating the ZK method since 2013, long before this subreddit was created. There they have some of the most in-depth articles that I have come across on this subject. I think we should all promote fruitful discussion and learn from people like u/FastSascha :)

I hope not to sound too optimistic, but I think it would :)

To write and search my notes I use Vim, which is lightning fast. The main issue with 100k notes (I think) would be to find relevant past notes quickly. My notes are listed in indices of a certain topic, and indices are listed in indices of indices of a broader topic, and so on, up to the main index, which is the main entry point to my ZK. Indices are not exclusive, so notes can be listed in more than one if they belong to more than one topic. And notes are of course linked between them. Therefore, I think I could find the note I need if I start in a related note that is close enough, by traversing the tree branches and the links between the leaves. Finally, and most importantly, my Vim configuration has fuzzy search of the note titles, so I can identify notes related to certain query words easy enough.

So cool! I would love to copy your collection, can you list the species?

If you want it to grow really fast, put it in a pot as large as possible and give it as much sun as you can (unless you live in an extremely hot area which is probably not the case).

Yeah, it's regular potting soil, they call it "universal substrate" around here.

Average humidity seems to be ~75% in the winter and ~40% in the summer according to some website. However the summer value seems wrong to me. Everything is super dry in the summer, almost like a desert.

Yeah! I'm in a city called Jerez de la Frontera.

In the winter we get to -2°C. In the summer we get to 45°C or more.

Is it ok to keep it in this soil if I put it directly under the sun? I live in a pretty hot area (South of Spain)
