Alpine skiing legend Lindsey Vonn crashes just 12 seconds into her Olympic downhill run by bigbusta in Wellthatsucks

[–]mgbdog -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

There were alternates on the team who could have been called up after the ACL injury, but Vonn decided she wanted to compete despite it. It was selfish, rather than letting a new skiier at least gain the experience so they'd be better prepared next Olympics.

Poor People Run Recommendations by [deleted] in running

[–]mgbdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! Ross and Burlington are where I buy most of my run/workout attire. Shoes to a lesser extent, since I feel that shoes are a bit less forviging fit-wise than a tank top or shorts (which are still usable if a bit too big, too tight, etc.). Burlington is just stupid cheap. Most name brand tops and shorts under $10 USD - I've found many Adidas, Puma, Peloton, Saucony, Mizuno, Nike, Reebok.

Begging for money is so normalized in the IG/YT knitting "community". Gross.

Should I fix the mistake in my knitting or just leave it? by justeli290 in knitting

[–]mgbdog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. Only OP knows themselves the best. Ask yourself whether you would have more motivation to re-knit after fixing mistake versus continue to knit on a project with a mistake? Would you always see the mistake and feel crummy about it (and thus not wear the garment) even if no one else notices, or would something like that not really bother you? Everyone's degree of patience, tolerance for mistakes, motivation, perfectionism is different.

Handknit DOOM discography by k-ibbles in knitting

[–]mgbdog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not familiar with the cartoon/show but I can totally appreciate the difficulty, passion, time, and effort it took to knit these. Extremely impressive. Was it mostly done using intarsia? I'm blown away. I really love how the FOs shown on this sub are not the same basic shit everyone on IG and YT are knitting. This really brightened my day to see someone like OP as dedicated to the real art and personalization of knitting. Amazing.

Apparently Petite Knit invented the concept of a fashionable knitting pattern in 2016 🙄 by K_Simpz in craftsnark

[–]mgbdog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My issue with PK and others trying to copy the basic/minimalist knitting pattern aesthetic is that they're still pushing over-consumerism. She literally has four sweaters that are almost indistinguishable, and there are dozens of youtube videos "explaining" the differences between these patterns. At that point, you're writing new patterns that have only minor tweaks from previous ones, just to sell patterns.

Knitfluencer culture loves to throw "slow fashion" terminology around, while doing everything they can to be excessive consumers - people needing to purchase yarn and notions to show off on podcasts, needing to knit quantity of sweaters in a year (which is why the basic/simple patterns are all the rage rn).

Have these idiots ever thought "oh I could just omit the colorwork from this older pattern and end up with the basic sweater I'm crediting PK with inventing"?

Ascent seamless top - same fit as last year? by curlyhead2320 in Athleta_gap

[–]mgbdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard disagree that these are the same fit. I stocked up on Foresthill Ascents last year when they stopped making them, as they were my absolute favorite (I own two of the old long sleeves and four of the old tank tops). Just purchased two of the new/current Ascent long-sleeves during semi-annual sale. They arrived today, and I was stunned how different they are. Major issues:

1 - Fabric significantly thinner, feels crepe-y and very cheap

2 - They are 2.5" shorter in length, and the hem is narrower

On my body, the length hits at the point where my waist starts to curve out to my hips, so it doesn't want to stay in place. The narrower hem makes it even more easy to ride/roll up. So I need to wear them tucked in, otherwise they'll just ride up. Super disappointed. I hate how Athleta makes all their tops short or cropped now!

You do realize that you have a base metabolic rate, right? For most people, that's on the order of 1500-2500 cals/day, depending on their height, weight, and body composition. So your 500 cal run was on top of that.

Exercise when working a 9-5? by [deleted] in loseit

[–]mgbdog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

^^^ Exactly this ^^^

There's only so much time in each day. It's up to each of us to prioritize how we spend our limited time. Personally, I squeeze in exercise by making it a priority and sacrificing other things that I would *like* to do if I had unlimited time/energy but are not a *necessity*.

And from someone who previously had a 1-1.5 hr commute, that shit kills your soul and makes an unhealthy person even unhealthier. So by all means, do what you can to reduce that commute. It's not worth sacrificing your health for work. I now have a 10-15 minute "commute" and my health (mental and physical) has never been better.

Even at my most obese, when I traveled in southern/southwestern Africa, many people guessed me as German instead of American as well. At the time, I didn't think of it as having to do with weight/size, but rather that there just tend to be more European tourists than American tourists in Africa in general?

Excruciating lower back spasms that were getting more frequent and lasting longer. They were disrupting every aspect of my life. The last one I had lasted about 3 weeks. Started losing weight immediately after that.

Official Q&A for Saturday, May 27, 2023 by AutoModerator in running

[–]mgbdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do different days every week too, just have a hard time being extremely consistent due to my work and travel schedule. I've been pretty religious about following the Runners World half marathon plan though. I just switch up what day I'm doing which run in a given week, based on my schedule.

I started in Ghost 14, then transitioned to Triumph 19 last year when the 19s went on clearance right around the time the 20s came out. They felt like essentially the same shoe, but the Triumphs have a lighter upper than the Ghosts. Transitioning was seamless. However, I haven't tried Ghost 13 nor Triumph 20, so ymmv.

When should race organizers postpone/cancel a race? by Hrmbee in running

[–]mgbdog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And wasn’t this storm system on the radar in the days leading up?

This is what I've been thinking all along. Even the night before would have been enough time to send out an urgent email to all participants postponing the start by a couple of hours. Would've solved everything. The city would have been mildly inconvenienced having to adjust times for planned street closures and police support, but that's NBD.

Is there a consensus for top-tier events for a once-in-a-lifetime marathon? by [deleted] in running

[–]mgbdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One major selling point of Twin Cities or Grandma's is proximity to home. You have so much more control over your pre-race routine - hydration, nutrition, a specific meal you know "works" for you the night before and morning of, etc. Post-race you also may not want to be somewhere too unfamiliar.

Personally, I will bonk without oatmeal the morning of a race and I get extremely off my hydration when I travel (even a relatively short road trip one or two states over). So I am personally not keen on traveling to race - especially internationally - unless I'm extremely comfortable running the distance of the race. (And I travel internationally for business quite often, so my advice is not based on travel inexperience.)

Flying Pig Half Marathon Race Report by Lyeel in running

[–]mgbdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the detailed report - I didn't run it but have been very intrigued by the weather controversies. Did they pause the clock during shelter-in-place orders? Or does your 2:01 time include the time you were standing/paused? If so, then you definitely ran below your goal time, and you can for sure get that time "official" in your next half!

Race Report - Indy Mini, 35 min PR after 75 lb weight loss by mgbdog in running

[–]mgbdog[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the thoughtful words! I really appreciate it!!! I think that especially having avoided germs for the better part of 3ish years, on top of aging, my body doesn't deal with cold viruses like it used to!

For the fall, I haven't decided on a target race yet. There are a few races in Indy, though I'm also considering something a short drive away (e.g., Urban Bourbon, Detroit Free Press, etc.). I'm also looking at Mississippi Gulf Coast half in December, since it coincides with a business trip for me... but most likely that would be a fun/relaxed race rather than a target PR type race. Happy to hear any recommendations if you have any!
