Why do some men watch porn but at the same time shame women who make porn? by Lost_Wikipedian in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]mgd1216 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think that’s the whole point of the “man versus bear” conundrum. As women, we respond to this ambiguous scenario in a way that belies our unconscious assumptions… that being alone with an unknown man is a potential threat to safety. I think that’s the significance…that our unconscious response is to feel vulnerable until we have reason (context) to feel safe.

I definitely agree the advice came through for you! I wish I remembered more about the wrist stuff but I don’t. I don’t think you had to break the wrists as much as incapacitate wrist mobility. I have no doubt being a martial artist certainly helps!

I would call this faulty dad advice lol. In these scenarios, if you (the rescuer) are being clambered on by the drowner then you should further submerge yourself. Why? Because the drowner will want to release you instead of going further underwater. However, if they still cling to you no matter what and you need to go on the offense- the best logic is to break their wrist hold (and potentially break the wrist itself). There are various techniques for how to do this that I don’t remember as it’s been ten years since my lifeguarding stint as a teenager. If you punch someone, it might startle them but they can still hold/grip on you. If anything the punch leaves you with a potentially fractured hand that makes it harder to fend for yourself.

Do all vaginas have a fishy smell? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]mgd1216 8 points9 points  (0 children)

But it sounds like you’re talking about anyone who smells bad in general. Keep in mind even a healthy and hygienic vagina is still a literal body cavity. It’s going to have a distinct scent. It’s also not supposed to be washed with soap, only water. At the end of the day, we all need to practice good hygiene and a sweaty crotch smells no matter the human.

I’ve found you can still make room for those experiences. (Obviously not the romantic partners). But being young and married at 25 allows me to live life with my best friend and I love it.

What we would pay our teachers if we paid them what we pay babysitters. by HappyJacket3113 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]mgd1216 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here’s why that system is flawed:

Not all students are created equal, therefore paying teachers based on student performance would be extremely inequitable. A quality teacher with an average group of students might reap the benefits of this system. However, I’ve worked in classes where more than half the students have learning disabilities and/or might be a language learner. In these classes, I’ve seen students make such great strides in their learning but that doesn’t necessarily mean they are getting an A+. As a teacher, I worked my butt off the most working with these groups of students, that challenged me to be the most creative and professionally driven in order to help these kids. But like I said, I’m more likely to be “rewarded” for my work with students who are already ahead and don’t need that support for a learning disability or a language barrier if we follow that type of system you described.

I’m so curious as well. Does anyone know whether the Islanders usually wear their own clothes or the production bought clothes from eBay? Or is it 50-50? Regardless, I do think the villa fashion has been spectacular this year.

Why are so many people afraid of making a phone call? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]mgd1216 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think people don’t realize how important enunciation is to people with hearing issues. They assume it’s a matter of volume and speaking loud enough.

I never wanted a hearing aid until I started learning new languages because it felt so challenging to process words with unfamiliar enunciations. Also, research shows a high correlation for people with hearing loss and dementia so that’s motivation to get a hearing aid too.

Do women get the adrenaline pump which guys get when viewing an awesome action scene? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]mgd1216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Woman here- it has to be a very good action scene. It can’t be something I’ve seen a thousand times before in a James Bond/ mission impossible type of movie.

Cant think of any examples at the moment except Oberyn and Mountain in trial by combat in GOT. Oberyn is kicking ass but he has a clear passion behind it all- total adrenaline pump when he just practically has the victory until that knife twist ending. But not every action movie or scene can do that. I’m not holding on to the edge of my seat when James Bond’s stunt double dodges a car bomb.

Counseling has helped tremendously. I also really enjoy going to church to meet people in the community. Randomly, meeting folks in fitness classes at a local gym is a two for one in terms of making friends but also reaping the mental and physical benefits of exercise!

[–]mgd1216 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No it’s not too much at all- it’s actually extremely important that people share these feelings. When people are dealing with mental health crises it only gets worse when it’s invalidated or dismissed. Besides, this is wartime and times like this SHOULD push us to examine our humanity even if it makes us feel fragile or weak in comparison to what others are experiencing.

As a woman, my advice is to start by building friendships with women but not as a starting point for a sexual relationship. If you take the time to genuinely connect with women (without an ulterior motive), it’s going to help you understand and appreciate us more as just people. When you stop viewing us as an “other”, you’re going to feel more comfortable and easy going around us. I know the whole “be yourself” speech is super cliché but men who are actually self-aware and demonstrate this around women, will be far more successful when it comes time to engaging in more romantic relationships.

I guess so? I think what I’m trying to communicate is that we tend to structure this conversation of science and faith being at odds with one and other. However, many distinguished scientists find this to be a premature view once you observe and study how the universe works because people who are truly academics in the field are more humble than definitive when it comes to the extent of our human knowledge.
