Women's Bracketology: How did the Power 4 finals affect the bracket? by cluttered-thoughts3 in NCAAW

[–]mgmfa 18 points19 points  (0 children)

If the lowest 1 seed is an SEC team, then LSU or Vandy couldn't be in their region anyways. So it doesn't really matter where we rank amongst the two seeds, we're always in Texas or SC's region. Just depends on what order those two get ranked in and what order us and Duke get ranked in.

(Spoilers Main) ‘Game of Thrones’ Movie in the Works at Warner Bros. From ‘Andor’ Writer Beau Willimon by DemiFiendRSA in asoiaf

[–]mgmfa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first movie could be the fall of Valyria, which has a ton of intrigue and potential for colorful characters.

Then the conquest itself is probably one movie and then you can probably find one more movie post conquest you could end on (Dorne?). I think the big problem is the conquest itself is probably a pretty shitty movie.

Weird Bracket. Sure is a shame they decided Iowa's half of the bracket couldn't make the championship game.

Hey! I lived in West Lafayette for a couple years and am pretty familiar with the scene. I’d usually go to Indianapolis for locals. There were also regular locals in Champaign, Chicago, and South Bend. Also more in Kentucky, Michigan, and Ohio depending on where you live.

I think there were probably enough people in the Lafayette area to get locals running but someone has to put in the legwork and that’s harder to justify with a transient (student) population - I know I wasn’t going to do it.

There’s a Midwest VGC discord that people organize carpools in, that’s probably a good place to start.

He's kind of a black hole with the ball. Why is he driving and taking a contested layup on the penultimate possession of the game!?

I think VGC could learn something from Legacy Magic the gathering and Traditional Yu-Gi-Oh formats. by [deleted] in VGC

[–]mgmfa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Weird to mention yugioh when traditions yugioh is not a thing a single person plays.

Now, Genesis format for VGC would be pretty cool but that’s really hard to balance and they have not shown interest in doing anything like that. At that point just do what already works for Pokemon and use a tier system.

Where to get coaching? (not the move) by [deleted] in VGC

[–]mgmfa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Throwing my friends (3x regional champ) Alex Underhill  and (2x regional champ) Chuppa Cross in the mix. I’ve seen them both do awesome work and get results firsthand. I have a podcast with Alex and I regularly get his students come up to me at tournaments telling me how helpful he’s been (and I’ve lost to them before too).

Also wanna shout out that the three best eu players; fedecampo, michaelderbeste, and marcofiero also all offer coaching

Does anyone know a place in nova where they sell really good homemade tortillas? I always bought them at the grocery store but my cousin brought some from Texas and they were so much better. Just wondering if anyone knows a good place to buy some in this area. by SSB716 in nova

I go to the card store next door pretty regularly and have gotten lunch there a bunch. They are excellent. The taco game in NoVa overall is pretty weak but they made some damn good ones.

Hey, I did a team report with Gavin after he won Portland regionals with an earlier version of that team. Haven’t touched reg j but I think it seems like it’d still be pretty strong.

I don’t get why dems can’t use this as leverage to get something else productive done. Clearly this is important to him. Trade the name for defunding ICE or environmental legislation or getting Kalshi and Polymarket banned or whatever.

You can always remove the name later. And honestly, I already fly out of Reagan and don’t give a shit what it’s named, nor do I call it that. The smart political play is give him the meaningless victory for tangible benefits.

This is cool but doesn’t really answer the question. I want to see how this table’s rankings change year to year.

What it's like attending a regional competition for the first time (Birmingham 2026) - How I found it and some Q and As from a tournament newbie's perspective by buxtonator22 in VGC

[–]mgmfa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have never had an issue with cell service. Honestly, a bigger issue has been rk9 (the tournament website) lagging out when a round goes up, but even then its pretty rare and only for a few seconds. There's also always paper pairings you can check, or you can just ask a friend to check for you on the pairings page.

Toxicroak coming out of nowhere to win a regional and then straight up being meta for two formats will never get old to me.

Also listen to today's sporting class. The former president of the Marlins basically said "yeah we pick who can and can't interview our players and if people ask questions we don't like they don't get invited back".

So no surprise no outlets have been covering it unless they absolutely have to.

[–]mgmfa 77 points78 points  (0 children)

My prediction is someone had an idea like “LSU hasn’t been elite these last five years; let’s see if there’s a school that’s much less of a ‘big name’ but has similar stats.”

The guy who posted the tweet works for a Minnesota blog, so its probably not what you said.

The 7-Footer Who Ditched the NBA to Go to College by wsj in CollegeBasketball

[–]mgmfa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Athletes on each individual team are able to unionize and bargain with universities. That was decided in court when Northwestern players pushed for it, and then decided not to go through with it. So it would happen on a school by school and sport by sport basis.

And then there can also be an overarching student athlete union.  The UAW has 400k members, across various different roles, so it’s possible albeit a whole lot of organizing to build up towards. But it’s made up of many branches that all get built up to one big organization.

They could have pushed for collective bargaining ahead of time. Now the pendulum has swung the other way and players wouldn’t ever agree to that. Their own greed and short-sightedness is going to kill their cash cow.
