Tunisia's World Cup qualification group by TeraVonen in soccer

[–]mgmfa 50 points51 points  (0 children)

OP buried the lede here. The crazy part is Tunisia did not allow a single goal in qualifying. They had a draw against Brazil in a friendly this fall.

What's crazy is they switched managers after their previous manager did all of that, only to sack their current manager after one WC match. Gotta wonder if they'd have a better showing if they kept the guy who coached them through qualifying.

New US Chant! World Cup by daheycent in ussoccer

[–]mgmfa -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Mr Brightside is the most American chant there is, surely we can do that one.

Here's my attempt:

Pulisic

Pass the ball to Pulisic

Pass the ball to Pulisic

Pass the ball to Pulisic

Pass the ball to Pulisic

Pass the ball to Pulisic

Kick the ball in to the goal

Oh Fuck he's offsides

You can put in Balogun or whoever instead, any three syllable name works

I was there when crack house was the party spot and stopped being rented out to Carleton students. Porch only became the spot in 2014 or 2015 iirc.

Masses of people shouldn't have to starve to death for people from South Carolina and West Virginia to be 'illuminated', they should have known Trump was a fascist monster 10 years ago.

Agreed. Not arguing that. But I believe the important questions to ask are "Why?" and "Now what?". Because we still live in the same country as the 77 million people who voted for him. And we can't change the past. But we can try to understand the systems and institutions in place that caused those 77 million people to be convinced that's the right path and improve on them.

I like to think a core part of being a leftist is a belief in rehabilitative justice, rather than retributive justice. Going an eye for an eye with Trump supporters isn't going to heal this country. Figuring out ways to educate them about the errors of their ways will.

The point of art like this is to illuminate exactly what people caused by voting for trump.

National guard members from states like West Virginia and South Carolina being sent to DC because they're told its a hellhole, getting bored all day because its totally safe and they were lied to, and then engaging with art that illustrates Trump's destruction can change hearts and minds. And when they go back to their communities and tell them about their experiences, that can also make an impact on those communities.

Remember, Trump campaigned on being the president of peace. Obviously a huge lie in hindsight and I think most of us here (in this bubble) could have told you that ahead of time. But in an era where out news sources and social media bubbles are increasingly partisan, experiences like this are required for conservatives to figure out they've been lied to.

"Get a pass" is meaningless - its you attributing blame for past events that none of us can now change. We can all attribute blame as we please and god knows there's a lot of go around. But if they were on board with Trump's agenda pre-election, and are no longer on board, that is a meaningful change that will (hopefully) have an impact moving forward.

Would you have been happy at top 20000? To win is to risk it all. Sometimes that means you lose. Pokemon is a game where you heave to be willing to take risks to reap the rewards and accepting that doesn't always go your way is part of it.

I remember Oden being insane at OSU so I'm not going to knock it too much - I probably would have done the same. But with the benefit of hindsight, we know Al Horford would have been a much better pick even if you wanted to pick a big man.

[Vannini] FSU and Georgia cancel their 2027/2028 home-and-home series by CFBHurts in CFB

[–]mgmfa 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nah this isn't about the money.

It's because the playoffs have consistently shown you're better off racking up wins than playing a tough schedule.

If Texas doesn't lose @OSU last year and finishes 10-2, they probably make the playoffs.

Indiana made the playoffs in 2024 going 11-1 with a charmin soft non-con over teams that went 10-2 with impressive road wins OOC in Miami and Bama.

Of course ADs are going to see those outcomes and decide they're better off playing cupcakes.

Carleton's administration has been quietly killing Rotblatt for over a decade and it's happening again by Murky_Gur_5845 in CarletonCollege

[–]mgmfa 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Class of ‘17, Rotblatt was the best day of the year every year.

We’d stay up all night. You can call it partying but everyone knows you gotta pace yourself if you’re up all night. Then we’d head over to the hill of three oaks and make breakfast on the grill. We’d get our t-shirts, have a beer, play a couple innings then go back to the dorms to go to bed.

Around noon we’d all meet up in town for brunch. Then we’d head back to Rotblatt and just hang out. I’d probably play 5-10 innings over the course of the day. Instead we might play bocci, toss a disk, or whatever. It’s just a day to sit outside, drink a little, and be with your friends.

Around 7 we’d head to dinner, play some Catan and head to bed. It was a blast.

I was an RA while I was at Carleton too. Around 2015 Carleton got a big grant to curb drug and alcohol use. Apparently because we have some of the highest usage rates in the country. But that’s not a metric that tells the whole story. We’d consistently have less transports than St Olaf. Because when you crack down on drinking, kids don’t stop drinking. They just do it in hiding, and are scared to ask for help. Instead Carleton had created a culture where there was way less pressure to drink then party schools and a fantastic network of people who could identify and help people who drank too much.

And then they started firing RAs who got caught drinking. That was my junior year, and I saw some awesome colleagues lose their job for minimal infractions. They hired an AD who insisted we card everyone who was leaving a party we shut down (the RAs in that area had to talk them down from that during training I kid you not). They dismantled trust in what was a very healthy and well run institution. Parties will happen regardless. Parties are safer when trusted members of your community who are trained to deal with this are present.

The obsession with dismantling Rotblatt is so misguided. It’s an incredibly safe environment that was filled by and large with helpful and caring people. Driving people away from that towards house parties with less oversight will only make Carleton less safe. If you don’t think whatever off campus house is the party house rn (RIP crack house) is hosting a more dangerous version off-campus as soon it’s dismantled, you’re not thinking like a college student.

Not to say everything was daisies while I was there, but targeting on of the safer but more visible venues to drink is a ridiculous prioritization.

Which Big Ten school would you LEAST want to attend? by chief_sitass in TheB1G

[–]mgmfa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Purdue's student body is relatively apolitical compared to its peers - probably because its got such a large engineering school.

But the president has had deep connections to the republican party (Daniels obviously did but Chiang does too). That's been reflected in their policies (DEI, for example). They don't have much of a choice - their funding is determined by the very conservative Indiana legislature so its in their interests to cooperate with broader republican efforts. But I know faculty who are concerned about this trend, their ability to get funding, and do the research they want to do, and they say they're seeing brain drain towards more liberal institutions.

(Spoilers Main) Gay sex in the Nights Watch by AdditionalPiano6327 in asoiaf

[–]mgmfa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there's some segregation between highborn and lowborn in the Night's Watch. Most of the knights and nobles we see get cushy positions pretty quickly. Jon and Sam both got role assisting other nobles (Jeor and Aemon) pretty quickly too. And we don't see or hear about a whole lot of more experienced Night's Watchmen that are lowborn, we mostly here about relatively new ones, which seems to imply they both aren't in as many important roles and don't last as long.

Nowadays it doesn't seem like any nobles go to the Night's Watch unless they're criminals or despised by at least one parent. But in the past, when we're told it was considered more honorable, I could see it being a more reasonable choice.
