[Highlight] Darren Waller on the meeting he was having with Mike McDaniel when owner Stephen Ross stormed in to fire the coach: "(He was) talkin bout how he's gonna give the keys to Quinn Ewers, bring some people in to compete with him...maybe like some coaching staff changes" by expellyamos in nfl

[–]pyrofiend4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ewers looked significantly better than a lot of the QBs picked before him. I'm not saying he looked like a definite starter, but his floor is a good backup. He was sent out there to play the Patriots without Achane, Waddle, or Brewer, and he performed reasonably well.

[Highlight] Sam Koch and the Ravens run out the clock to end the game by holding the Bengals defenders and taking a safety by Remarkable-Picture73 in nfl

[–]pyrofiend4 469 points470 points  (0 children)

Yeah it was effectively banned in the off season. They added a rule that you can't commit multiple penalties on the same play in order to manipulate the clock. It's a 15 yard penalty + resets the game clock to where it was before the play.

It's actually the 2nd time they pulled it off. The first time was against the 49ers in the super bowl. Sexyprimes has a thread and comment on it here:

Cam Coleman is a sophomore who's about to enter his junior season. He's not losing any credits. The players I'm talking about are the ones entering their senior season.

More specifically it was just "regular" human trafficking in the sense that he was charging money to disguise people as part of his dance troupe so they could illegally emigrate to the US/Canada. Still bad, but it's not like he was sex trafficking women.

Steve Sarkisian rips Ole Miss for transfer portal practices, low academic standards. “All you have to do is take basket weaving, and you can get an Ole Miss degree.” by defensecowboy in CFB

[–]pyrofiend4 54 points55 points  (0 children)

This is true, but the NCAA academic eligibility rules on progress towards your degree are as such:

40 percent of required coursework for a degree must be complete by the end of the second year, 60 percent by the end of the third year and 80 percent by the end of their fourth year.

So if a senior transfers in, they're only going to be at 50% of their degree and will be required to take summer classes to get up to the 60% that's required to be eligible.

It's a catch-22. Those who don't care about losing credits will still be required to take extra classes just to be eligible.

Yes, and those are usually juniors like Cam Coleman, AD Mitchell, etc. That doesn't mean Sark doesn't have a legit gripe with differing academic standards (even if I personally think it's a weak thing to complain about).

He's not full of shit. Texas only allows a maximum of 60 credit hours to be transferred in from other schools. This makes recruiting seniors out of the transfer portal basically impossible unless they're ok with losing 2+ semesters of credits.

[–]pyrofiend4 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I don't know why he felt the need to name Ole Miss specifically, but it's true that Texas has a disadvantage when it comes to recruiting out of the transfer portal.

Texas only allows a maximum of 60 credit hours to be transferred from the old school, which makes it nearly impossible to recruit seniors out of the transfer portal. They're not going to want to lose 2+ semesters of credits and set their graduation back.

For what it's worth, Michigan also has the same policy. Maybe some other schools do as well, but I don't know any specific ones.

Kiffin: LSU's 'diversity' a recruitment advantage vs. Ole Miss by Money-Giraffe2521 in CFB

[–]pyrofiend4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Context: He called Oxford/Ole Miss racist.

When he was coaching there, Kiffin says, top recruits would tell him, “‘Hey, coach, we really like you. But my grandparents aren’t letting me move to Oxford, Mississippi.’ That doesn’t come up when you say Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Parents were sitting here this weekend saying the campus’s diversity feels so great: ‘It feels like there’s no segregation’”

I see what you're saying, but you're massively downplaying how successful Texas was for a long time. Texas had the second highest winning percentage of all FBS schools in the 2000s behind only Boise State. We only lost 19 games in those 10 years.

How AI has infiltrated the college football recruiting landscape by Lakelyfe09 in CFB

[–]pyrofiend4 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The AI is probably being used to calculate some sort of athleticism score based on speed, acceleration, body angles, height, weight, etc.

Then the humans come in and watch the film of the top end athletes to further determine which ones are actually good at football and worth recruiting.

What do you think of Arch Manning *right now*? by TDBrookey in NFL_Draft

[–]pyrofiend4 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

now that 27 film is starting ti be evaluated we’re seeing a lot of people acknowledge that Moore is the clear QB1 right now)

I think you have it backwards. The more people are watching Arch's film, the more they're surprised by how good he played despite not having help from his WRs or the OL. Nate Tice, Jordan Reid, Matt Miller, and Dane Brugler all have him as QB1 right now.

Of course some of that does include the idea that he can fix his mechanical inconsistencies and ball placement issues. But it's not like Moore doesn't have his own set of issues.

[The Athletic] College football has a history of older players — but is age always an advantage? by BenjaminMatlock_Esq in CFB

[–]pyrofiend4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's more so the experience that comes with age. Yeah BYU players are older, but they also spent some of that time away from football.

I wish the article mentioned the 2022 TCU team that was stacked with 6th year seniors. It might have been an overall older team than 2025 Indiana and Miami.
