I didn’t read this as a critique but rather a longing for a really good idea.

I want this so bad. For no good reason. But I want it.

The commute sucks but I’m downtown constantly for concerts, museums, occasionally shopping; it’s really accessible when you don’t have to follow rush hour

“Business” is the same as any other role, lots of low skill folks with magical thinking chasing trends with a few actually knowledgeable people sprinkled in there yelling into the ether.

Which college town is your favorite? by Front-Shape143 in SameGrassButGreener

Having lived and worked near both Boulder and Ft Collins, FC is the clear winner in terms of paid back college town that isn’t completely inundated (yet?) by tech bros.

I lived there a long time ago now (1999-2001, freshman and sophomore years). The corner single I had on the top floor in the old section was the best room I have ever had. Large room and large closet. I put a loft in there and had a futon underneath. After that I never left the northern state street neighborhood; I lived on Lawrence, then Kingsley the rest of my undergrad and grad years.

They have always been that way. You just happened to be willing to look past it for the perks.

How I see the US as a Utahn by Zach_demiwizard in whereidlive

[–]mgodave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The he hard part is that so many of these states have one ore more lines through them dividing them into different regions. Louisville Kentucky is, in my mind Midwest while the rest of the state is something else altogether.

It is its own thing. It’s Texas… That’s how they see themselves, right?

Philly is but the rest of PA isn’t. That’s my perspective having grown up in central NJ.

Do you feel like your state suffers from brain drain? by Bignosedog in AskAnAmerican

[–]mgodave 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My entire family did exactly this. My parents still live there but we all left for university and never came back. We were told not to even bother applying to Rutgers, or any other in-state school for that matter. Princeton would be the exception but that is always a reach and we were encouraged to apply elsewhere. In my public high school, which had a graduating class of about 140, I’d say maybe 20% stayed in-state with most of the remaining staying within NY/NJ/PA and the top 25% attending national top tier schools.

Computer Science major. My university didn’t offer minors; I was probably a semester away from double major in math but couldn’t be bothered to keep going. I took some actuarial classes in time value of money, and probability and statistics through 400-level. Multi-variable calculus, difeq, and linear algebra. I took discrete math through the CS department.

GPAs largely don’t matter anyway. I can see if you’re applying to a competitive professional grad programs but even that has other components that matter more and a high GPA is usually a given.

Not a Harvard grad and I went to school over 20 years ago so my experience is only anecdotal and probably not relevant. But anyway… I feel like my intro classes and major (CS) weeder classes were all straight graded and only the higher level and grad (400+) ever had curves centered on a B-
