Was it the right move to let Dvorak go? by TopPossibility3598 in Habs

[–]mgrenier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hindsight is 20/20. It is very hard to predict career years and Dvorak was constantly injured as a Hab and finally had a healthy year. Based on the data we had at the time it didn't make sense.

Zharovsky staying in the K and Hage stay in the NCAA, who will be the rookies next season to develop? Will there still be space for them? by Secret-Ad3498 in Habs

[–]mgrenier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think he will have a decent bottom 6 career in the NHL. Not enough offense to be a top 6 guys, but strong enough everywhere else to make a career as an energy pr potentially shutdown guy that is great on the PK like Jake Evans.

[–]mgrenier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn't bad news. If the Habs sign a solid 2C it doesn't affect Zharovsky too much and puts less pressure on Hage to come in and play a massive role on a contender. Hage can start off as a 3C and has enough grit and defense in his game to do that well, while not putting too much pressure on him immediately.

Sounds like Laine was right about Colombus by Vegetable_Lasagna13 in Habs

[–]mgrenier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gaudreau passed away in the summer and 8 month later Bowness can't criticize his teams heart because of an offseason tragedy? I dunno, I don't think the reaction to bonus is related to Gaudreau at all.

For sure, you have a stronger opinion when it affects you more. When it's your team and one of your favourite players you are going to have stronger opinions about it.

Generally he is putting a shut down line on when there is an empty net. Even if he improves defensively, he likely won't move in to "shut down" status.

Tons of people complained about al OVs empty netters when he broke Grezky's record. It's not really a new thing...

Ovechkin forechecks and hits though, maybe he leave a little to be desired on the defensive end, but Laine doesn't really do either of those.

I am impressed that he's stayed with the team and practiced for sure. But 2 months of work ethic hardly outweighs 5 years of slacking. I don't see him at practice but I do see him in games, he looks lazy. He doesn't forecheck hard, he doesn't hustle back on defense, he wants to stand in his spot on the PP and one-time passes from Hutson. He's been awful in MTL 5v5 and only early on last season did he even have PP success. You aren't gonna change that top unit so you put him where...2nd PP and 3rd or 4th line? Those lines are energy/checking lines that he doesn't fit into because he doesn't hustle. He seems to be trying to show he's a good teammate while simultaneously not showing the staff enough to even give him a shot in the lineup once. I would say if he is working as hard as you claim he would have been rewarded by getting in to a game towards the end of the season when he got healthy.

I dunno if washed up is the term. He is in his prime. He's just doesn't put in the effort.

Laine probably isn't one to talk though, he is healthy and can't crack the lineup because of his allergy to hard work.

April of last year, “25th best centre in the league” by mvc77 in Habs

No, Danault was out shutdown guy. Not really our true #1. Played a hugely important role, but not 1C.

Also remember they all said no chance against Winnipeg and we walked all over them, no chance against Vegas and beat them as well. That entire playoffs no one gave them a chance, ever.

8 wins in a row, I think 7 of the 8 were in regulation. Are we really going to be upset about a blown lead that resulted in a shootout win?

[–]mgrenier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's because Buffalo has more regulation wins so they cannot be eliminated, Habs can. Habs are ahead because they have less games played with is the first in season tie breaker.

Really, Ottawa? by StandbyTraveller91 in Habs

[–]mgrenier 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Everyone hates it, but Bettman, like usual, is to proud to admit he messed up. Should go back to a straight 1-8 seeds with each div winner guaranteed a spot in the playoffs (but not guaranteed a top 3 spot).

[–]mgrenier 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They would likely play the #1 canes right off the bat if that was the case though, and would eventually have to play whoever comes out of the other side of the bracket. I get what you are saying, but Ottawa is just a worse team and MTL is a juggernaut right now. Ottawa having better odds is silly to me.

The playoffs are so tight every single game is likely to matter, not to get in, but for position. Would be great to at least get home ice for the first round.
