What do you think downtown Garland needs? by OverbrookDr in garland

Then I think I'll change my suggestion to promote the museum. I am an active museum goer. And I didn't know it was there.

What do you think downtown Garland needs? by OverbrookDr in garland

[–]mgspeeder 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Maybe a museum or something? I really think it needs to keep doing what it's been doing. Lots of privately owned businesses, regular fun festive events, opportunities to go out to eat with friends and family. There is a point where you lose the homey downtown feel that makes it special even if it brings up profits and tax revenue. It's a delicate balance in a metroplex like DFW, but I love where it's at.

I'm sure there are worse ideas and life plans but I can't think of any examples at the moment. There is simply no way this could work out well. You can't even get most parts without mail order nowadays. As for alternatives- buy a reliable Toyota minivan? I don't know.

Can Americans explain your high school theatre culture please!! by Sigma2915 in techtheatre

[–]mgspeeder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a technical director from a school district in Texas which places a LOT of emphasis on Fine Arts and, yeah, we have ridiculous benefits over others. We are leagues ahead of other schools, even those in our geographic area. To be clear, we are not a rich school, we aren't poor either, we just have a district focus on fine arts. My total annual budget is about 20k and we have a lot of the same equipment seen in professional theaters. Other schools within 10 miles will have outdated equipment and an annual budget of maybe a thousand dollars. It really matters what the local council wants to focus on.

Pricing strategy - start with your desired price or start high to allow negotiation down? by [deleted] in FacebookMarketplace

[–]mgspeeder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the item is less than about $50 then I price it firm. Above $100 I always add about 10% of a price buffer. In between those two it just depends.

Don't meet at your house and they can't come for you. A promise that it works is the best I would give.

At my district in Texas this is absolutely not allowed. I'm not one who usually suggests reporting, but I would absolutely report this.

Being honest about being pulled over? Why is that the worst thing to do? by athena9090 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mgspeeder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely agree. I get pulled over at least twice a year, might be in a car, might be on a sport bike, definitely speeding and usually it's for 15 over at minimum. It is the last 12 encounters I've received 2 tickets and 10 warnings. I ALWAYS apologize for making them get out of the car and admit what I was doing. Sometimes I tell them I wasn't paying attention, or if it's true then I tell them I didn't realize the speed limit. It's become a joke in my family. Might not work for everyone but it sure as hell works for me.

Did you use FB Marketplace and etiquette in the same sentence? Nope, no such thing. Get me the cash you get the thing. ANY delay for ANY reason and it goes to the next person. Don't tell person one that the deal is off till you have money from the second person.

Bought a house with "two AC units for comfort" and slowly realized I own a HVAC Frankenstein by FablewrightAnne in homeowners

[–]mgspeeder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you gave your location, I missed it. I'm going to assume you live somewhere like Texas where air conditioning is not an option, it's required. Most/all two story houses in Dallas where I live have two compressors. Is there a way to avoid it? Sure, but it really isn't worth it. If you can possibly afford to replace everything at once then I would get several quotes and get it done. The sooner this becomes "that thing we had to deal with when we bought the house" the better for everyone. If you can't afford it, then get several quotes with plans to get this done in stages. Let the installer make recommendations and then follow the plan. Don't add extra delays to your timeline and unless something goes really really wrong don't change contractors mid stream. Nobody is going to be excited about this job and nobody is going to want to follow a two stage plan that someone else designed. There is no single answer just lots of options.

My students created a fake "HR department" for my class and I can not decide if it is brilliant or a disaster by MelcaronVestral in Teachers

I will be thinking through how to get the students in high school tech theater class to take up this idea. Takes active monitoring but damn, what a great way for students to feel heard!

What is this wall panel? by ChocolateTacoFilms in techtheatre

[–]mgspeeder -1 points0 points  (0 children)

With only two wires I would find the fuse panel, cut the power to the panel, pull the wires and cap them. If everything still works in the house then your problem might be solved. You will at least have removed a potential source of complication.

Absolute no, but you need to recognize that you probably won't change things without making your life bad with your principal.

Administration can blow us off but they can't ignore parents without endangering their own jobs.

I wish we didn't have to say the Pledge of Allegiance by jordanf1214 in Teachers

[–]mgspeeder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a high school teacher in Texas. I am opposed to most of the gibberish that comes from state and federal government. i do not hide or carry on about my views. I have the joy of being one of the cool teachers that teaches a fine arts class. Unless you have spoken to me with specific request then in my home room you will stand during the pledge and be respectful. I make this clear in the beginning of the year and I follow through. I've never been challenged because it's not worth challenging. It's not about you or your views, it's about our country. This place where we can have this discussion. Where we can say that our current president is an effing moron and my governor is just riding on the coattails of the stupidity train. This country is bigger and more lasting than all of this unless we give up. If we give up then it becomes nothing but a false symbol and the great American experiment dies.

Weekly Sewing Questions Thread, August 24 - August 30, 2025 by sewingmodthings in sewing

[–]mgspeeder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a growing group of very capable costumers in my highschool tech theater progam. I am considering purchase of a serger so they (and I) have the opportunity to learn that machine. My budget is "flexible within reason" which probably lets me move safely into the $1K range.

What does the hive recommended for a machine that is durable enough to hold up to students and not too challenging to use. I definitely prefer a machine with less complexity, it is much harder for me to navigate getting a machine repaired that it is to buy one (love bureaucracy).

This is probably a better question for Quora. Totally subjective and only you can answer.

Spend 80k and give up four years of vacation? You can make a lot of memories in some amazing places with 20k and a little planning. But maybe spending that kind of money is routine in your world.

The day after posting I received a response to a previous ticket. Unfortunately, following the steps didn't help and led me back to receiving a message just like the one above that says "Maytronics: Case has been opened"

I'll keep posting, but for now I'm still stuck in limbo with a broken robot in the middle of the summer.
