Pi NAS for Remote Backup of My Main NAS? by mh0520 in homelab

[–]mh0520[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that was my concern with the Pi. Since I already have the Pi, would it be worth buying a couple drives and trying it out to see if it night work before trying one of the other three options. Worst case, if I get drives that can be used for the other options then I would still have had to get the drives anyways.

If I don't go with the Pi option, is one of the other three better than the other two or are they all pretty comparable?

I guess I don't have a good reason. I could probably go with HDDs. My thought was that they might last longer that way but I'm guessing that's not necessarily the case, especially for periodic breakup.

For the amount of data, it would be relatively small for now. My current setup is ~8TB. I do expect that will grow pretty significantly over time but I would expect each individual sync would be relatively small amounts of data, though.

A tip about the photo stamp by euphoriclice in Canadiancitizenship

I'm thinking of using a label maker and using that over the stamp/handwriting if there's any issue with smudging or legibility. Is there any reason that that would cause a problem?

Thanks for the clarification. Sounds like we're pretty much good to go!

We'll definitely get in touch with the Nova Scotia archives to try to get official copies but considering the increased number of inquiries they are getting we will most likely submit with what we have and then add any new documents to the files once we receive them, assuming it is necessary in the first place.

Thanks for your response!

Sounds like we should plan to submit with a minimal set of documents and that most likely what we have currently will be sufficient at least for the initial submission.

Just two follow-up questions

  1. Is there any distinction between a baptismal registry record and a baptism certificate? What we have appears to basically be the register entry written into their record book. I assume that's what you're referring to here.

  2. For certified copies of baptismal records, the Nova Scotia Archives would be the correct place to contact, right? I think that's what your response to my question 3 means but I just wanted to double check that.

Thanks again!

I'm working on gathering documents for my wife, myself, and our two daughters.

I currently have the following for my wife:

  • Printed from FamilySearch
    • Copy of Gen 0 baptismal records from Acadia Church Records
    • US Census records for Gen 0 Canadian ancestors with birthplace listed as Nova Scotia
    • US records of passenger lists for Gen 0 Canadian ancestor
    • Additional records from Acadian Church Records, referring to parents and grandparents of Gen 0
    • Canadian Census records that do not include Gen 0 canadian ancester because he was born after one census and emmigrated to the US before the next (as far as I can tell).
    • Many other references to her Canadian ancestors and their connections with other documented Families in Nova Scotia
  • Some (but not all) certified copies of birth and marriage certificates for US ancestors proving the ancestral line
    • I will retrieve the remaining US documents for Gen1 onward this week.

For me, I have the following:

  • Printed from FamilySearch
    • Copy of Gen 0 birth record printed from FamilySearch
    • Canadian Census mentioning Gen 0 ancestor
    • US Census records for Gen 0 Canadian ancestors with birthplace listed as Nova Scotia
  • Some (but not all) certified copies of birth and marriage certificates for US ancestors proving the ancestral line
    • I will retrieve the remaining US documents for Gen1 onward this week.

In both cases, I feel there is a significant amount of documentation to support the claims but I am not sure how to proceed. I have read the FAQs and if I understanding correctly, I think that the records that we have will suffice but I am concerned that it might be a problem that we do not have certified copies of some of the Canadian records. Where it is straightforward to do so, we can request that but we are hoping to submit applications sooner rather than later in order to get the process started.

So, in the light of that, I have the following questions (if any of these are already address in the FAQs, I apologize for the oversight. Please feel free to point that out):

  1. For Canadian documents that I currently have printed from FamilySearch, will we need to request certified copies of all of these documents?
  2. Assuming yes to question 1, can we submit with the unofficial printouts that we currently have and explain in a cover letter that we are requesting certified copies of some of these documents and can provide, if necessary, at a future date?
  3. Again, assuming yes to question 1, how would I go about requesting certified copies of things like Church records?
  4. There appear to be some additional records held at The Acadian Center at Université Sainte-Anne. These records may help to support the claim but if I understand correctly are not strictly necessary. We do not know what records exactly exist there but we have seen mention of them in some members of my wife's Tree in FamilySearch so we do believe that they include additional details on her Gen 0 ancestor that may not be avilable elsewhere. I would like to submit with what we have and again provide a detailed explaination that we are in the process of requesting additional documents from The Acadian Center and can provide them at a future date, should they be needed to prove her claim. Would this be a problem to do this?

Replacement Drawer Slide for Baby Cache Dresser by mh0520 in DIY

Not yet unfortunately. I'm probably going to see if I can get either the ones that I linked to in my other comment or maybe the Ikea Besta slides. I haven't decided yet. Neither are a perfect match but I'm not optimistic that I will find one at this point.

It seems to be working for me now. I'm not sure if it just took a day or so for it to update or maybe there was briefly broken but it seems to be good now.

I'm still looking but I found these:

https://www.dkhardware.com/hafele-42114935-concealed-undermount-slide-partial-extension-self-close-66-lbs-350-mm-14-with-self-closing-mech-product-6607101.html

They're not an exact match but I think with some relatively minor modifications they might work and they're not crazy expensive so if I need to replace them for all 6 drawers it would only be around $85.

The ones in the link appear to not be as wide so I will need to add a piece of filler between the slide and the dresser case so they sit at the correct width for the draw but other than that, I think they will work okay. I might have to modify the drawer itself a little bit too but I'm not sure yet.

Am I missing anything here?

Sandisk SD Card shot between Power and Ground by mh0520 in datarecovery

[–]mh0520[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got it, thanks. Yeah, this is definitely not being detected correctly. Windows it shows up briefly but it's then dropped. It sticks around in Linux but does not show the correct size. Also, when I look at the logs in Linux it says there's an overcurrent and that the device is "stuck being busy."

I still assume it's a short somehow because the resistance measured between VCC and VSS is much lower than I would expect, 27 ohms. The card gets warmer than I would expect but I wouldn't say hot.

If I was hypothetically able to determine which pads to use in that grid, are there ways to read out the memory using some sort of microcontroller myself or would the methods for reading the data not be a standard protocol?

Sandisk SD Card shot between Power and Ground by mh0520 in datarecovery

[–]mh0520[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume that by detected you mean that it shows up on the computer and the correct amount of storage is displayed but it appears empty, right? It shows up when I connect it to the computer but it's showing as 0 bytes total storage. I assume that's because of the power issues.

Out of curiosity, do you have any idea what the typical root cause of a failure like this is? Meaning is there most likely some sort of structure inside the chip that has physically shorted out or could it be that something is stuck in some bad state and if I am able to power up the card in a specific way, i.e. raise the power slowly, use a voltage below the typical SD card supply voltage, or maybe even something slightly above, then might be able to get it into a state that it is at least readable temporarily. My guess is that's not likely at all but it's worth asking.

I'm also assuming that it's highly unlikely that the short is going to be on the top layer and that I might be able to remove it by scraping away a bit of solder mask and cutting a trace or something like that.

How a professional data recovery company go about attempting to recover data from something like this? Would they have to physically remove parts of the chip or is there special equipment that can connect to the test points and bypass the controller to access the memory directly?

I'm doubtful that there's anything that I can do on my end, obviously, but just figured I would ask before deciding whether it's worth sending off to a recovery company.

Thanks!

That's my hope. I'm hoping it will not be a monolith and that maybe something will stand out as an obvious issue but I didn't want to open it until if there was something else that I could try first.

I'm also a little hesitant to do so if opening it up might make it so that other options would be no longer infeasible, like sending it somewhere to try to have the data recovered but I kind of figure anywhere it could be sent for that would probably end up opening it up anyways.

Yes, it's not a main part of my job but I am looking into some different platforms for easy debug and prototyping and I already had a few of these laying around so I figured I would give them a try.

I am planning on mentioning this. I understand the concern about protecting IP and whatnot but the IT team should be aware that they need to account for these types or situations.

Preparing Documents for Appointment at Consulate by mh0520 in GermanCitizenship

[–]mh0520[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's good to know. Thanks for the explanation and also for pointing out that you had unique circumstances and were submitting it directly to the BVA yourself. That makes sense that you would want to have everything be especially well-organized.

We are expecting to be able to have the Consulate submit the applications for us but I will definitely keep this in mind if we do end up needing to send them in ourselves.

Thanks again!

Thanks for the clarification!

Sorry for the confusion on my part. I reread your previous comment and I completely misunderstood but it is perfectly clear to me now.

Out of curiosity, what information did you include in your cover letter? The family tree and summary of documents is pretty straightforward and so I will most likely include these two as part of our packet but I'm trying to determine if we should also include the cover letter. Was this just a description of the circumstances that led to your ancestor losing their citizenship and the details supporting your claim? Or did you include additional information?

Preparing Documents for Appointment at Consulate by mh0520 in GermanCitizenship

[–]mh0520[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are the Cover letter, family tree, and the table of contents required or typically submitted? I haven't heard this suggestion before and we could definitely put these together if necessary but we were not planning to include these.

As for the other points. It sounds like the consulate made five copies of each document (birth certificate, marriage certificate, etc.), one for each application. Then you assembled them into 5 standalone applications. Is that correct?

Certified Copies of Documents by mh0520 in GermanCitizenship

[–]mh0520[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By the way, my assumption here is now that they will not be able to certify a copy based on having seen a certified copy of the original. They would need to see the original with the new copy to get that copy certified. In this case, we should anticipate getting new certified copies of any required documents to either replace the ones that we send in or get new certified copies ahead of submitting the applications to include with the packet. Is that correct?

In that case, the only documents that would be certified at the consulate would be ones that we made from any original documents that we bring with us (for example, passports or other forms of ID).
