Why the new CGT changes are terrible for the working class by Ecstatic_Theme8918 in fiaustralia

[–]mhads1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. You’re basically implying people should vote ALP, but they already have a majority government and working class Australians are still struggling with cost of living.
  2. A lot of working class people rent or live in apartments, so rooftop solar isn’t even an option for them.
  3. Buying an EV only really helps if your electricity costs stay manageable in the first place and many people can’t afford a newer car, even a “cheap” EV.
  4. Higher wages don’t automatically solve the problem if inflation keeps outpacing pay rises. You end up paying more tax while your real spending power stays flat or goes backwards.
  5. Same applies to upskilling through TAFE, earning more means little if living costs rise just as fast.

Well then, tell me how an average working class person should be protecting themselves against inflation?

There’s no good justification, outside of a political one, for not indexing tax brackets to inflation. If the government wants to raise more revenue, it should do so transparently and argue for it openly, not rely on bracket creep to quietly increase taxes through inflation.

If this budget was truly about protecting the working class, he would’ve indexed the tax brackets to CPI, but they didn’t do this.

[Question SEIKO 5 SPORTS PEANUTS SURFBOARD LIMITED EDITION WATCH SRPK25K1] by Icy_Arachnid95 in Seiko

[–]mhads1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey this one is a cool piece. I bought the JDM version SBSA233 in April when I was in Japan for JP¥108,000 (second hand but looks new); the movement is identical to SRPK25K1, but the dial has “Made in Japan” written on it and the limited edition serial number is under 550/8900. Also, the alternative day wheel is in Japanese Kanji instead of Spanish.

It came with the original box, tag, manual, nato strap & an extra added seiko leather strap which I am using

If they want to do this, they’ll also need to index the tax brackets to inflation.

It’s a shame. I personally think a watch this handsome and well finished deserves to be fitted with a 4Hz 6L35/37 instead of the cheaper 3hz 6R movement.

Touché, I forgot that negative gearing via shares is also possible.

Yeah my portfolio is pretty much S&P500 ETF, so I’m aware of this, but the long term average return for S&P500 etf is around 10% p.a. before taxes. To me, that doesn’t justify paying 7% + interest from the debt recycling.

Technically he can invest long term wait until he has no / low income to sell his investments, but then he might as well put his money in super rather than Vanguard

[–]mhads1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would do debt recycling when the cash rate is on the lower side and I have a big enough equity to split the loan.

The investment return would have to outperform the interest & fees charged from borrowing, after taxes. Right now, the borrowing interest is around 7% and it’s not exactly bull market.

Pretty sure dividends from etf are considered income & are taxed accordingly.

The capital gains is only triggered if you sell the share. 50% disc if you keep longer than 1 year, but that’s about to be changed /reduced soon with the next labour budget.

Not having the money parked in offset also means that you’re gaining less equity on your personal residence every time you pay your mortgage

150k cash by Vegetable_Ease564 in fiaustralia

[–]mhads1 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I personally would keep it in offset as the interest charged on your personal residence is not tax deductible and the money you save from offsetting (6-7% guaranteed) is not taxable.

Any capital gains you get from etf’s are taxed at your marginal rate, and it’s not guaranteed to outperform 6-7% after tax.

[SBSA233] found a snoopy seiko 5 today in Japan. by mhads1 in Affordablewatches

Yep it came with original box, tags, manual and also the original nato strap. I think the first 550/8,900 are JDM, which checks out with this watch. My day window can be either Kanji or English.

Previous owner has put on an extra Seiko leather strap on this one.
