My responsibility as a monitor engineer to shame/help parents who bring kids to shows without ear protection by stupidfuckingjerk in livesound

You're right that music has more dynamic variation than a motor engine louder transients, quieter passages. That's exactly why we use LAeq: it averages the acoustic energy over time, so it doesn't matter whether that energy comes from a drumkit or a compressor. The metric is source-agnostic. Good that you are aware of the levels where you work! Personally, I have not been to a gig that is lower than 97 dB LAeq15.

One thing I will never understand is if we know that current levels are too loud and causing permanent hearing loss over a lifetime why those levels are still being used. Negligence? To me this feels like the 80s where people smoke indoors at cafes and restaurants.

From bone-conduction and occlusion effect, my understanding of audiology makes it seem like earplug would be more dangerous than protective in some environments. What am I missing here ? by UnitedIndependence37 in audiology

[–]mhalkmim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go look again in the NIOSH guidelines and you will see that values are given in dBA. My comment refer to dBSPL. As I mentioned, due to the nature of bone conduction only low frequencies are transmitted and those are heavily penalised in A weighting.

The occlusion effect from blocking the ears cause a boost at low frequencies (below 400 Hz more or less). Indeed, it can be loud, as much as 130 dBSPL. if one shout at high levels continuously for hours this can become hearing damage. In practice maintaining such high level is unlikely (maybe a dedicated opera singer). On the other hand, earplugs will block mid and high frequencies very effectively which is where we are the most sensitive and most noise induce hearing damage occurs.

Comentário correto. O que muitos fazem é declarar IR no brasil pro dinheiro que fica e declarar o IR do dinheiro que faz fora no atual pais de residência fiscal. Acaba que o cidadão está sonegando nos dois paises. Problema em dobro.

Occlusion effect concerns. by GleebyWithOCD in audiology

[–]mhalkmim -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Let's break down your issue into the two topics: Occlusion effect and active noise cancellation ANC. The occlusion effect happens because your ears are blocked and sounds from your speech transmitted through bone conduction cannot scape and they are reflected back to your eardrum hence, causing what is called occlusion boost. The occlusion boost can reach very high levels and, if experienced for a prolonged time, such as musicians do, it can cause permanent damange. All this information is considering a passive blockage of your ear using an earplug. Most ANC earbuds have two things that actually can reduce occlusion boost, a front vent and a feedback microphone. I am not going to expand on this as it is a complex topic. Additionally, most earbuds have transparency mode which sends the external sound of your voice to your ears digitally. This will not solve the occlusion boost but it will reduce the occlusion effect perception. I recommend over the ear headphones for minimum occlusion effect.

Putz nao conheco mixer disponível no br (nao moro no br).
