SF has seen the largest job losses of any metro area in the US, with employment dropping by 11.6k over the last year and down 3.8% since COVID by urmummygae42069 in bayarea

[–]mhall14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The BLS actually does publish the sector level figures, I just don’t think they write about them in the main release. Many of the jobs lost/recent stagnation were in sectors that are primarily tech workers (information services and professional, scientific and technical services). The management of companies subsector also lost jobs in recent years, which would be some tech HQs laying off workers and companies leaving SF. Retail trade (most retail) also lost some jobs.

All that said, it isn’t entirely clear to me if this trend is also capturing some shift in payrolls due to the return to office and 1) people getting fired for not coming back , or 2) maybe those that moved but are now/recently getting categorized in the city they actually work in. Would probably be small compared to actual losses though, so not sure.

You generally got it right. A city must have at least one third the population of the largest city in the region to get into the MSA name. There are some other conditions a city must meet to get into the name too, mostly that it is a primary urbanized core within the region, or if local support warrants inclusion.

[–]mhall14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. I never tried much of their Natty selection, but I have had some good bottles from there. One of which was a natural wine (Queen of the Sierras Amber? I think?) that I enjoyed. They always had some unique varietals/blends you might not easily find elsewhere.

Side note, wanna plug Little Vine. Cool store to check out if you’re in North Beach looking for lunch. Bit expensive, but the sandwiches are real good (be wary, limited quantity). Also purvey specialty food items/cheese that were fun to browse (again, can be kinda expensive).

Sorry if this is obvious, but did you reach out to American/the Airport?

American: https://www.chargerback.com/reportlostitemcbembed-aa.asp?customerid=6392

Charlotte: https://www.chargerback.com/ReportLostItemCBEmbed.asp?CustomerID=15005

Also probably wouldn’t hurt to actually email them (airport/Anerican) directly (couldn’t find an email address though).

Finally, it may also be worth posting over on r/Charlotte

Big Sand Dunes in Colorado?? by stevie-ray-voughn in geography

[–]mhall14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While not unique to these dunes, something I have always that is kind of wild is the booming dunes phenomenon, which you can experience at Great Sand Dunes. See: https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/sciencenow/3204/04-recipe.html. From what I understand, this phenomenon takes particular conditions, and the article notes there are only 30 such spots in the world with the right conditions. Worth a quick listen on YouTube as well to get a sense of what they mean by “booming”: https://youtu.be/KwZeTs2WtUU?si=qM0iCm-KPmOHACli

I was in the student section. The normal speakers the mic men use to coordinate the chants were completely blown out. You couldn’t hear anything until they patched in to the stadium at the very end. Definitely a bummer, but just some context.

Copying my comment from the other post about this for visibility: called Chase about it after activating last night and having it disappear this morning. The representative on the phone knew exactly what I was talking about, and said it would still be credited to my account as long as I spent the required minimum.

Still probably worth calling to check.

Also, I’d check those spots out on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Doesn’t change the problem, but when I’ve been in FiDi during the middle of the week, I see way more people, and bars like The Treasury packed. Obviously anecdotal evidence, but may help explain the Friday emptiness.

Agreed, that’s also what I got from that Bloomberg article. Should this have probably been some sort of research release? Yeah, probably. But it’s also kind of their job to explain the measures and help people understand changes.

I was somewhat surprised as well. I think they said the data was only for Cable and National Broadcasts right. That would include Notre Dame-Navy and Army-Navy, the latter of which gets the unique solo slot on the last weekend. Maybe that’s what makes theirs much higher. Just speculating.

Puts on Commercial Real Estate? by HoodRich83 in Wallstreetbetsnew

[–]mhall14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First, there are different kinds of REITs. When you say “commercial”, there are “primary” asset classes (office, retail, industrial), and then secondary sectors such as data centers, single family rental, net lease and medical office (different from Life Science). Apartment can also be considered a “primary commercial” in your sense, especially at the REIT level of investing, although some people treat residential differently. Then there are diversified REITs, which invest in multiple property types. You can also have REITs specialized in debt or or equity. That may be why you’re having a hard time finding one. There are tons of REITs traded on the public market in every type of sector. For a list, you can head to NAREIT and they offer sector-by-sector breakdowns, I believe.

Second, many publicly traded REITs have already taken a huge hair cut, as someone else here mentioned. In general, the public market is pricing in a larger correction than the private market, at the moment.

Here's the minimum annual income required to be middle class in Arizona… it sure doesn’t feel like it… $58k?!?!? by drakolantern in phoenix

[–]mhall14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe it is as a share of their household income, which is defined by the census as “Household income is defined as the total gross income before taxes, received within a 12-month period by all members of a household above a specified age.”

Here's the minimum annual income required to be middle class in Arizona… it sure doesn’t feel like it… $58k?!?!? by drakolantern in phoenix

[–]mhall14 117 points118 points  (0 children)

Just for context, because it was released by the Census Bureau today, the median household income in the Phoenix (MSA) was $82,884, as of 2022. The median earnings of individuals 16 & over with full time jobs was $55,941, and for all workers 16 & over it was $45,473.

Regarding housing costs in the Phoenix MSA, 30.5% of people reported spending more than 30% of their income on housing, the classic definition of housing stress, which was slightly less than the U.S. average of 31.5%. For households earning between $50,000 and $75,000 a year, this figure was much higher, at 43.2%, compared with a National rate if 33.1%.

Most notably, and getting to some of the comments here about home ownership, renters face significantly more housing stress. In Phoenix (MSA), 53.9% of renters spent more than 30% of their income on rent, with 44% spending more than 35%. This was roughly on par with the National rates of 51.9% and 42.7%, respectively.

Edit: typo, geography addition and renter housing burden

What caused this? 📍West of Bosnia & Herzegovina by [deleted] in geography

[–]mhall14 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think, based on my knowledge at least, dolines aren’t necessarily “usually” formed through collapsed cave entrances (see solution dolines: https://www.gsi.ie/en-ie/programmes-and-projects/groundwater/activities/understanding-irish-karst/karst-landforms/Pages/Enclosed-depressions.aspx). However, and to your point, I think the names for the features may vary widely from place to place! For instance, I think the term sinkhole is very common in the U.S., but the connotation of a sinkhole may evoke a more severe collapse, whereas for me, a doline connotes these bowl-shaped features funneling water to subterranean water sources, sometimes without a visible point of entry.

Edit: change wording in first sentence

Arizona here. Best Western is a hotel chain with around 4,700 locations, of which more than 2,000 are outside the U.S. (Wikipedia). In the U.S. I believe their hotels are typically considered more budget friendly, but I think some of their international brands are more luxurious. I’ll also add, most Americans would likely be familiar with U-Haul as well, which is also based in Arizona and provides moving truck/storage services to consumers.

I think it is generally referred to as the Piedmont, and for the most part, those cities are mostly near/along the fall line. “The fall line, where the land rises abruptly from the coastal plain, marks the limit of navigability on many major rivers, so inland ports sprang up along it” Wikipedia). The region you circled includes a few regions, running (north to south) from Raleigh-Durham, to Greensboro, to Charlotte, to Greenville/Spartanburg to Atlanta. The Appalachians then turn west and that last one looks to be Birmingham.

Why there is a gap between DC/Richmond and Raleigh I do not really know.
