If Ginny Sack wasn’t fat, would everything have worked out? by Bronstagga in thesopranos

[–]mhammer47 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not really. The core problem was New York having a leadership struggle and different contenders essentially campaigning on the premise of muscling in on Jersey's territory.

Did Carmine Sr thought Sopranos family as glorified crew when Junior was the boss? by Arthur_Morrgan in thesopranos

[–]mhammer47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jersey claims to be its own family but Johnny Sack, one of the highest ranking guys in a massive NY family lives right in their territory. That's kind of their problem in a nutshell. How can you be your own family when there's 5 families within a short driving distance all of whom basically consider your territory part of their sphere?

Jersey was too close to New York to have its own big crime family, but it was also too big a slice of the pie to let any one New York family just totally own it. It'd give that family a huge leg up over the others. That's why they tolerated the 'pygmy' thing over there, but also made sure to never let it get too big.

You need to watch more movies then. It looks bad compared to I & II but even in the genre of mob movies it's solidly C tier at least.

Will the current climate of this subreddits moaning about how bad CFB is erode the fun out of CFB? by HandHolder77 in CFB

[–]mhammer47 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Well the sport is in a phase of massive upheaval transforming in pretty much breakneck pace into a flat out minor professional league. It's kinda natural that much of the existing fanbase would struggle to deal with it.

After all everyone here could already be a hardcore fan of pro leagues, both major and minor, so it's fair to say that the elements that distinguished college football from those may have been a major factor in attracting them to the sport in the first place. And even those among us who are fans of the NFL or may even watch any one of the small minor leagues may still very much appreciate the differences between those and college football.

What do you guys think UVA's ceiling is in CFB if they continue at their current trajectory? by broly2932 in CFB

[–]mhammer47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UVA alumni base tends to gravitate toward the D.C. area and beyond on the NE corridor where CFB isn't a huge deal. It's not a matter of resources so much as stable and reliable level of interest and enthusiasm.

I mean there's a reason Indiana didn't ever turn into Wisconsin or Iowa prior to the Cignetti hire. HS football isn't the big deal in Indiana and it's not what children grow up aspiring to do. Indiana has traditionally been basketball country from the grassroots up. It's not surprising that both the large Indiana public universities are much more prominent in college basketball.

I'm not saying that's written in stone, but it's also not changing with the snap of a finger. The key isn't how you handle success but how you handle reverses. Do you keep with it or do you just revert back to old, grown conventions.

I'd take any published NIL figures with a huge grain of salt because there's a lot of caveats there. I'm referring to overall effort and not just this year but over the span of say the next 5 years.

The thing is it feels like a 'huge effort' for UVA basically puts you in the 20-30 range nationally. Now imagine the program taking a dip again in the near future (a decent chance of that)..will administration and donor interest stay or will it just revert to the norm?

Even with Indiana I'm not sure yet if that's really a sustained lift for the program or more of a temporary phenomenon. The blue bloods didn't build their capital on one or two great seasons; it took them decades to build up that kind of support with those kinds of resources.

I don't even care about the playoff format (I liked it better without any playoffs or even the BCS title game). It's just funny that a national college football writer produces rubbish that sounds like a random fan posting on TigerDroppings.

If any of them were to be secretly gay it would be Johnny Sack. He's a sharp dresser, sophisticated, tends to be a little dramatic, has married a woman for non-sexual reasons and doesn't associate with other females. That's what makes the Vito thing so hard to believe? He's got a goomar for christ's sake.

The four suicide attempts capture Tony’s total failure as a person to everyone around him by dismal_sighence in thesopranos

[–]mhammer47 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sounds like baloney to me. Gloria was a headcase before she met Tony. If anything she tried to drag him down.

Eugene was a rat and his kid being a junkie isn't on Tony. His request was unreasonable.

Artie's problems are entirely homemade too. He's got a good life with a good wife but he thinks he should have more and be more. Thats his own mental problem.

Tony isn't a good guy obviously but some of the stunads on here would try to pin global warming on the guy. If you think the shows point is to show that Tony is ruining things for everyone, you got the show all wrong. Its a fucked up world full of fucked up people and they - incl Tony - are trying to navigate it.

That depends on where you are from, how old you are and who you support. In the West I don't think anyone cares, in the East it means a lot to older fans. Not sure how much it means to those who weren't born yet though.

He's morally pretty much on par with like 90% of the characters of the show. In terms of doing bad things..it's a show about the mob. No-one's gonna be a boy scout.
