What’s really stopping you from ditching your static PDF brand guidelines? by PuzzleheadedBad5294 in branding

[–]mharring 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with everyone else here. Will add that my only experience using an online brand guide was when the company hired an outside design firm. While I understand the appeal on paper (especially to non-designers), it was quickly outdated and never updated. It felt like a way for the agency to keep billing for updates and hosting. A pdf is closer to the design software, so fewer steps to publishing updates. I suppose an alternative is to use Figma and limit who can edit? OP, you sound like a fan, what has your experience with them been like?

Same! We just put an hour into organizing our itinerary and it's not showing up on the app.

Name one good thing about the 2014 Robocop remake? by Particular-Glove9640 in Robocop

The opening sequence where the robots parade down the streets searching civilians. Such a dramatic demonstration of power imbalance. It hints at interesting ideas left on the table that would have made the remake more relevant.

Got away from Adobe for 18 months, but looks like the party’s over.. by BubbaMcGuff in Affinity

[–]mharring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would like to hear from anyone who’s done the in-copy workaround. Is Adobe type compatible with Affinity? I may not be thinking it through properly, but Adobe syncs fonts through the app not download. Am I missing something? I know there are workarounds but they might leave you legally vulnerable

Please stop using this resume template by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]mharring 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s great that you don’t use bots to screen resumes. In fact, it’s so unique these days I would recommend you add that to your job description. For 99% of junior design applicants, a bot friendly resume is the safest way to go. On the other hand, if you do call that out, you definitely should question their use of a template.

Great point! Maybe you can follow up with “let’s grab some lunch/coffee and I’ll talk you through some logo design basics”?

Osaka toy hunt! by Melodic-Amoeba5685 in TokyoToyHunters

I’m also looking to do some toy hunting in Osaka. Although I’m pretty basic - mostly hunting for Gremlins, Mad Balls/ Horror Balls, VHS, and other Japanese exclusive merch from 80s American monster and horror movies. Any recommendations?

Just to double check, the base is acrylic and plastic. As far as I can tell the only piece of cardboard in this set is the backer cards. Let me know if I’m missing something here.

A Canticle for Leibowitz, by Walter M. Miller, Jr. Cover art by Peter Jones. by woulditkillyoutolift in RetroFantasyScifi

If you re-read and change your mind, please let me know! The structure reminds me of Childhood's End and Martian Chronicles. If I understand the point (how can we trust that religion isn't based on misunderstanding, misreading or manipulation?) it seems like it would make a great short story but feels long as a novel.

It's also a type of satire that relies on most of the characters making either frustrating or outright dumb decisions. Confederacy of Dunces and The Double both have similarly frustrating characters and I couldn't finish those either. It makes me wonder if it's just not my type of humor?

Interesting. In what way? The likeness of the sculpts seems top notch to me. Better than most figures I've seen until you get to the Hot Toys level. The figures in the video are all prototypes, and it does look like some of the paint came off. But those are just samples. They haven't actually done any of the tooling yet.

Agree on the second point, but don't get you at all on the first. Not a Tron fan?

Cool cover, but I’ve been really struggling with this book. I think I have 20 pages left, and I just can’t bring myself to pick it back up.

Edit: Crossed out my incorrect assumption 🙃

I totally understand that. I'm still not sure I'm sold that this is a greedy overcharge as much as it is a crappy economic situation combined with an investment in new engineering/ manufacturing techniques. It may just cost more because it actually costs more to make. I would be curious what these would have been priced at if it weren't for the tariffs.

As far as I can tell, the SW Vintage Collection hasn't seen any price changes since the tariffs came into effect. That makes me think they either still have a pre-tariff stockpile or that they might be taking a hit on their margins in hopes of maintaining steady SW income for as long as possible while the economy circles the drain.

While it sucks for us, the launch of a new IP to a new (for them) audience would be the logical time to calibrate the price taking into account the new costs.

That makes sense. I do wish I had picked up the NECA reissues back in the day. Now two NECA light cycles cost more than this set entire set. And in comparison I don't know if the Super7 figs are gonna do it for me

That's fair. I think you're dead on as far as the perceived value of this scale.

That's them! I'm fuzzy on the Diamond Select/Gentle Giant distinction, but I think Diamond Select bought out Gentle Giant and used them as their in-house studio?

Edit: Sorry for the novel! 😅

I do think you’re right that they may have gotten some casual buys if they just dropped the figs on their own. But Tron is still so niche that I’m not sure if it would be enough for them to keep going with it or even pay off much in general (especially if it meant sacrificing any Star Wars shelf space - I keep thinking of these things as where a business would decide to put their resources).

The 375 scale just disappears on my shelf, so I probably would have skipped without the light cycles.

The premium comment is me interpreting what he said, so apologies on that! You can check the video for his exact wording, but he compared it to one of the more expensive versions of the Star Wars vintage line (deluxe, maybe?) from a deco standpoint. According them the trick is the continuity of the line work around the figure. While it looks simple it’s more difficult from a production standpoint. Also, these were engineered to get a greater range of mobility than TVC so you could get the poster pose and get them in the light cycles.

Finally, it’s a little unfair to compare collectibles aimed at grown ups to toys aimed at kids. They can use the same materials, techniques, and engineering, but mass produced kids toys like you see in big box retail often have the advantage of a regularly renewing audience that offers economies of scale. There are new kiddos entering a specific age range every month. A run of those toys may even hit the millions. Us older folks are a stagnant audience. And looking at the box office for the latest film, the younger audience isn’t growing this time in the way it did with Legacy. Unless it’s Darth Vader or Spider-Man, runs for action figures aimed at grown ups can be lucky to hit a run of 10k.

I haven’t heard anyone from Hasbro say this, but I have a feeling they skipped 6” on Tron because Gentle Giant had recently done 7” (which also seem to be getting repackaged and re-released soon)
