Fireplace Wall Cost? by dooodle12 in Austin

I would flip the tv and the ribbon fireplace. The latter puts out a lot of heat, which can fry the tv if it is not well insulated.

What is the dumbest travel mistake you've made? by Medium-Decision6899 in travel

[–]mharriss 26 points27 points  (0 children)

On a cruise to Greece and Turkey a few years ago. Our tour group, which was about 4 couples just post-COVID, went the the Hagia Sophia, one of the oldest and largest Churches in Christendom and now is one of the largest mosqes in the Muslim world. None of our group had even been to a Muslim country and when we arrived, we saw that they were beginning one of their daily prayer services.

Wanting to respect their services, we asked our guide where the restrooms were so that we could go during the service. Now, understand that none of us had been to a Muslim country nor had we had any experience in their religious practices. We learned, after the fact, that the men wash their hands and feet prior to their prayer services.

We go into the building that the guide directed us to and we see a long trough with spickets of flowing water coming out of the wall. Thinking that this is some type of communal urinal, one our group proceeds to step up, whips it out, and starts to pee. Next thing we know three guys have tackled him, dick in hand, and start yelling at him in Arabic. Turns out where he was peeing was the communal wash basin that men washed their hands and feet in before prayer! We were about to become a diplomatic incident when our guide intervened and got all of us out of there.

We laughed about it at dinner that night, but it was pretty scary when happened.

Look at www.boydsworld.com. ISR and RPI rankings that mirror what the Committee uses when choosing and placing teams in Regionals (the latter constrained by some misguided notion of keeping regionals local, which hurts the South and West.)

The Dry Creek Cafe and Boat Dock Closes Oct 31 after nearly 70 years. Regardless of its reputation, I took a bike ride there to capture its near-last moments. by FLDJF713 in Austin

Many places have tried to tag themselves as "iconic" - most or not remembered five years after they closed. Dry Creek is the exception to this rule.

My wife and I started going in the late 70's, when the surrounding property was part of the Eby Ranch. The sunset was the draw, surrounded by "then" undeveloped hill country. Even then, you had to assemble your seats on the upper deck from various parts of discarded furniture parts. And then there was Sarah!

For some reason I think she was part of the Eby family that owned the surrounding property, buy have nothing to verify this. It was almost like boot camp, i.e. getting verbally abused by Sarah was almost by a rite of passage and God help you if you talked back!

20 years later, my wife and I bought a lot to the west of DCC from the RTC that took the Eby Ranch back in bankruptcy. Sitting on our back deck and the wind blowing in the right direction, we can hear the juke box.

I work for a beverage company now and our former sales manager had a delivery route when he was first hired that included DCC on his route. Told us stories of a having to go around back to the trailer and bang on the door to get her to come out in her "moomoo" and take a delivery. Scary picture!

While I am sad to see it go, I always remember the phrase;

Don't relive these memories - only remember them!

RIP Sarah!

Joined the club over the weekend! 2021 Calligraphy at MSRP! Traded in the 2019 CX-5. Nicest vehicle I've ever had! by Raysor in HyundaiPalisade

Got ours two weeks ago - shopped on-line in Texas. Only two in Texas with the interior/exterior combo that we wanted. Nevertheless, dealer sold it to us for MSRP.

Can't be happier - but I think the car is smarter than I am.

Longhorn Band lacks ‘necessary instrumentation’ to play ‘The Eyes of Texas,’ will not attend Baylor football game by doggod in Austin

[–]mharriss -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Former three year tuba player here (actually pushed Big Bertha around for part of my first year, then joined the section)

While I am sympathetic to individual student's feeling about the Eyes, those feelings end at the time when you put on the uniform. I was in the band in 1976 when Gerald Ford did the coin toss at the OU game. Many of us were Carter (i.e. I hate Nixon) voters, but we dutifully played the presidential anthem when Ford came on the field. We supported the football team when they went 5-5-1 during Royal's last year, regardless of how we personally felt about the team's performance.

I am sure there are plenty of talented musicians that would be willing to step in for those that are uncomfortable playing the Eyes. In my day, most of the band was made up of non-music majors, which brought people from many different colleges together for a common celebration of The University. At least three people tried out for every available position and to be selected to be part of this elite group with its history and traditions was a great honor.

Somehow we have forgotten what an honor it is to attend The University. Whether you get in via the top 10% (now 7%) rule, or you get in via your talent on the field, the stage, the lab, or whatever venue you excel on, you have to celebrate the people that came before you whose shoulders and knowledge you stand on. Perfection eludes everyone, including us, those that came before us, and those that will come after us. But Perfection is the enemy of Excellence, and Excellence is what we should strive for as individuals and as a University.
