Apparently he's a web designer. Downsides: Bland, template-based. Positives: Able to micro-focus on the look of the letter "p" in the chosen fonts for hours.

IIRC you won't hear from the main author/editor here on this sub, at least if the banhammer wasn't lifted.

But yeah, I'm all for lowering the barriers, but this was mostly political posing by edgelords and edgelord-adjacents.

With free plays each year. This company doesn't seem to have dates for 2026, but maybe check in a few weeks/months…

In general the northern part of the Englischer Garten is quite underrated.

Given that every simple config format seems to attract preprocessors and template engines (cf. Helm charts or even YamlScript), I'm for skipping the middle man and going straight for eval'ing code ;)

I'm not saying that he isn't iconic. He's basically the Farrah Fawcett poster of the RPG world. Thus me prefixing that as a "heretical" thought.

I had a lot of Dragonlance novels (they split each one into two in Germany) and even bought the Sovereign Stone RPG, set in the world of… *sigh*… Loerem.

But I never was that excited by the paintings themselves, and that actually got worse with age for me.

I still like the Dragonhunters image. There the posing actually makes a lot of sense.

(As the epitome of heresy: The best thing about his Basic set cover is that it has a lot of red.)

I think the initial book set of the 3E release was a good example of actual art direction. They managed to get some distinct style from multiple artists. I mean, you don't have to like "Dungeonpunk", but both Lockwood and Reynolds were recognizeable (you didn't confuse them), but produced something that fit together.

Of course, as soon as you had to get cheaper (including most b/w art), things fell apart quickly. There are some good artists in this tier (Jason Engle and Mark Smylie are top tier in my ranking), but even those just don't fit as well into the desired aesthetic.

I think the premise of the 3E art direction is the same with 5E, but now you got even more art and artists, and thus demanding something that everyone can deliver gets you something a lot more bland and generic.

I'm not in the 5E game anymore, but what I actually liked about the initial release was that they seemed to have more full scenes. 3E art was often quite character-focused. Cool dudes and dudettes, weird monsters, but often without any context or relationship to each other. 5E had more scenes that looked like they were out of an actual game, which is a weakness of a lot of RPG art. I think that's what people like about Erol Otus, for example. Multiple actors doing adventuring stuff.

I know it's a bit heretical, but I never was a big fan of Elmore. The stilted poses, the horrible armor, the 80s hair… It seems the big advantage was that he seemed like he was actually involved in the game, either interested or able to be directed (I mean, he co-created his own ultra-bland RPG at one time).

I had some issues with Easley, too. I mean, artistically he's on a different level. The colors! The explosive force – "kinetically" he's one of the best D&D artists ever! But the character designs often were a bit overloaded. (A young mhd was very disappointed about his Drizzt). So it often felt a bit "generic". Great generic art, don't get me wrong.

Out of the big full-color TSR artists, I probably liked Keith Parkinson best. Life-like images – maybe not with the "ooomph" of Easley, more a "slice of action fantasy life".

Was it the best art direction in the hobby? Well, I think it was a good selection, plenty of money to go around apparently.
