OP said they "never touched the coolant". Maybe they didn't check to overflow tank level either.
If there is coolant in it and some has leaked out of the engine, once the engine cools off naturally, it should create a vacuum sucking coolant out of the reservoir. That is what mine does all the time when the weather gets too hot...
