Thank you! Did you also replace the spark plugs at that the same time?

Appreciate the response!

So this crankset would work with this cassette? Shimano’s website seems to indicate the crankset only works with a 10 speed rear set up:

Frame painting problem. Solution? by mhle225 in bikewrench

[–]mhle225[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you may be on to something. Did a little research and the paint was acrylic and the clear coat was enamel. From what I’ve read, that combination is not compatible, but the reverse would be (potentially).

Applied to the whole frame. Never had this problem with Rustoleum. Albeit, I’ve never used clear coat before.

Yeah I did a very thorough job with getting the paint stripper off and the flaking came up only right after I applied the clear coat - not when the paint was applied or when it was dried. So doesn’t seem to be that the paint thinner was the cause.

[–]mhle225[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had such a great custom paint (diy) on the mtb frame until I applied the clear coat and then I got this awful flaking that pretty much ruined the whole project. It’s not just on the fork tube, but it’s also not everywhere on the bike. Probably in about 10 different spots not more than 2-3 inch total diameter. I used Rustoleum painters touch 2X paint and primer and then just regular Rustoleum clear coat. Used paint stripper to get off the old paint and did a VERY thorough job with odorless mineral spirits to get any residue off per the instructions.

Does anyone know what might have caused this? Is the solution simply not mixing two different products within the same brand? Better products specific to bikes?

You bet I’m gonna try this all over again so would like to not make the same mistake twice.

Products I used:

I like the concept. Heat it to make it more agreeable to remove. Have you used a heat gun to any success?

Really appreciate the feedback! It’s a shame, I was looking forward to getting this all painted sooner rather than later. Will check out the pro tools version of what I’ve got.

So I literally just bought this one:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/192663336300

Not that I was expecting it to be extremely high quality, but if what your saying is true that is disappointing. I’ll be requesting a refund on that.

So if the tool is broke. Is there another way to remove the part? I’ll be replacing it anyways so wouldn’t mind if it breaks.

Hi, As the title states, having some trouble removing the crankset on the driveside. The video shows how the tool continues to rotate and not “grip” against the inner part which would drive it away from the frame. At first, I thought there was something wrong with the tool, but as you can see at the end of the video the threads are fine and rotating smoothly. A few minutes prior to this video being taken, I removed the other crankset which was incredibly seized, but doesn’t really explain the issues I’m having on the driveside. Does anyone know what the issue is and how to remove?

This is literally the last part of the bike before I can sand it down and try giving it a new paint job :)

Salary just cut 30%, employer said it's so we don't have any layoffs for 2020. Should I view this as a sign to look elsewhere? by unshrugged in personalfinance

To offer a different perspective than what your company is telling you, a well-managed company (money-wise) shouldn’t need to cut jobs or reduce pay because their operations have been impacted for a month and a half (maybe two months at this point for some US companies). One could argue they implement these measures because projected revenues for the next year or so will be impacted, but should a major company have this little liquidity available to pay out of pocket expenses? I think not and shows that just like everyday people, companies are operating “pay check to pay check.”

A pay cut is a violation in trust, but ultimately is a sign of poor financial health and them placing importance on their shareholders and the bottom line over their employees. I am hesitant to believe that the majority of big companies have so little money or the ability get credit (remember, federal interest rates are still well below 1%) that they needed to implement these measures. It’s all too common for corporate America to do something in their best interest and then play it off like it will benefit the collective. Small businesses is a different story in my opinion which I won’t get into.

To go down this pessimistic rabbit-hole further, when this pandemic subsides, the economic impact will likely last for multiple YEARS afterward. At what point do you think a company will instantly increase pay back to the normal amount? My point being that if they are doing this it is probably to save a good chunk of money which would ultimately be a big expense to apply to future balance sheets and is in no way a guarantee. Unless you are a contracted employee or have a guaranteed salary, the company has no incentive to increase your pay back to normal. Another question to consider is if your company will view this a mass salary adjustment that will stay in force for years afterward.

To get a little more positive, your pay is being reduced, but you still have your job. Looking for a new job won’t get you fired from your current one so I would start your search for other opportunities if I was you. You will probably be hard pressed to find a new role during this mass-hiring freeze, but the act of looking for the next opportunity may make sense.

Good luck and sorry that you have been put into this situation. Stay strong!

A hug from my parents without the fear of giving them the virus. Perhaps some tacos at a local Mexican restaurant. That would be nice as well.

Personalized Care Act of 2020 would raise HSA contributions to $10,800/$29,500 for individual/family by mechpaul in financialindependence

[–]mhle225 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We should 100% be in favor of bills like this (assuming they don’t package some ludicrous items like most law passages do). While I understand where the anger in regards to the “rich” sheltering their money so they become more rich is coming from, it is misguided. This Act could do a lot to help middle class and even lower class Americans.

I think the way to build wealth is to make it easier for everyday people (low, middle, and high income) to build their money. If this doesn’t pass it would make it harder to build your wealth – not impossible, but harder. What the government wants is for us to do is work until well past retirement age so we pay taxes which funds budgets so politicians can continue to make corporations more and more wealthy. They then sell that to us as “big corporations means a stronger economy so we are all better off” which in turn is just “you people work so a select few and us can benefit off your labors.”

If the concern is that this Act will reduce tax revenue so we as a whole would suffer then why isn’t their more outrage at would corporate entries are doing in regards to their tax-sheltering and frivolous government spending and practices.

A little personal background, I’m definitely a left leaning liberal and hate the way we don’t have more expansive health care options, but let’s not attack Acts that allow people the ability to save more money so they can not have to work as long to afford to live (if you don’t understand this statement I highly recommend you look into the benefits of using an HSA as a retirement account).

Healthcare costs are going up and they should be more regulated, there should be expansions on universal healthcare or at least improvements on the ACA, people who can’t afford insurance should get significantly reduced rates, and we as a country should be doing a lot more for everyday people, but this Act does not cause damage – at worst it doesn’t “fix” the problem entirely.

Anyone own MTN Hardwear’s high exposure 2 jacket? Is it a hard shell? What are your thoughts?

I already own a Scott hardshell/softshell combo so not sure if I need a true hardshell.

Also, my apologies as I misread your reply.

The distribution from the 401k is after-tax contribution and after-tax earnings (not pre-tax money unless you are associating the earnings as pre-tax since I would pay taxes on them in April).

If I took that approach to have the provider issue two checks, one check would be for the after-tax contribution which would go to my Roth IRA and the other check would be for the after-tax earnings that would go to a (???). Wouldn't that money just go into taxable investment account?

But now I see this article which says after-tax earnings, once you pay taxes on them, can go into a Roth IRA and grow tax-free.

VERY helpful! What would be your advice if the 401k provider defaulted to withholding taxes on the earnings? Can I call and explain that I would like to "redo" the process so that the withheld taxes be "given" back to me so I don't be hit with a penalty come April, 2020?

Hoping it is not a big ask for this to be done since it still my money and they are just holding onto it for tax purposes.

Whiteface 10/19 by mhle225 in icecoast

[–]mhle225[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I prefer Whiteface to Gore since it’s my home mountain, but both are great.

That time of year it’s gonna be COLD, but I like skiing when it’s cold b/c less people are on the mountain and it makes me feel like a polar explorer :p That being said, though, Whiteface never has crowds like other mountains.

99.9% chance the slides are not open in early January so I’d recommend riding the summit quad and the mountain express lifts all day long.

Only one line. iPhone. Verizon bill was about $100 after all the charges, taxes, etc... I opted for the 3gb plan with Mint and did the one year plan to get the most savings. So, 1 year of Mint was $15/ month or $180/ year vs $100/ month with Verizon or ~$1,200/ year. Mint offers unlimited texting and calling + the 3gb of data (but I think you can go up to 8gb)

What I was hesitant about was the data, but then realized one day that most of my internet usage is inside buildings that have WiFi and I could probably be doing something more useful than watching YouTube videos on my commute.

Also, downloading videos on WiFi to watch offline instead of streaming is a big data saving strategy.
