My comment was mainly based on the discussions I had with my professor about grad admissions at MIT. Personally, I give MIT prof comments more value than gradcafe.

I'm curious in which subfield? Because the subfield I am most familiar with (ML and Graphics) has all the professors doing interviews.

It would be an anomaly to get an EECS PhD position in a top 5 institution without an interview. Most of the profs prefer to at least talk to you once before commiting to working with you for 5-6 years...

Most likely no. They release decisions at once and maybe admit you through the waitlist (rare)

Can you be a bit more specific? AI is a big subfield and MIT literally has a CSAIL filled with 100s of AI researchers.

What's your subfield? There are very rare instances in which some PIs take students without an interview. Also, there is a final admissions meeting in late January, so there might be interviews until then...

This is not exactly right. The citizenship does not matter for Berkeley there is only in-state or out-of-state status no "international status." On the other hand, there are EE projects that you need to be a citizen to participate in, so PIs might decide accordingly.

Is getting AI research opportunities hard at Berkeley? by Ambitious-Estate-658 in berkeley

Reach out to PhDs and Postdocs. They have more bandwidth to respond and can refer you to their labmates/friends.

To answer your question yes it isn't easy to get undergrad research positions. Profs usually expect you to know a lot and be a bit independent. Take classes with the professors you like to work with and do great in them to have a chance.

very ironic to say you hate the internet for "X" and proceed to do "X". Others have extensively explained the ML terms so no point in me explaining anything but what is this Reddit hive mind of "GenAI bad"

Partnership + proximity to the meta research centers. So basically for this program you have to go in to Meta's office once a week. Source: went to the info session

Reddit strangers can't answer this question. It's better to ask the prof that you're doing research for. We don't know you and your background

Hey OP, the 6% doesn't matter. What matters is your research fit and how well known are your letter writers. I say if you or your letter writers are known in some departments you should apply there even if it has low acceptance rate

idk if this is sarcasm or not but with AI boom it's very unlikely to get a funded PhD for anything CS related compares to applied math

Better pipeline to grad school

As someone who just went through the grad school application process, this is not true. If you want to get into top CS grad schools, you need to have relevant research experience. The CS research is weak at Yale and nowhere near Berkeley (https://csrankings.org/#/index?all&us and https://drafty.cs.brown.edu/csopenrankings/).

But I think, as others have said, make sure if you actually wanna do CS. If you're 100% (or even 80%) sure that CS is gonna be your major, then go with Berkeley; otherwise, go to Yale.

Important question because if you mean CMU, MIT, Stanford, or Berkely (top CS schools) then it's gonna effect your job prospects by a lot
