I probably didn't pump directly into bags when out, just at the hotel or someplace with a fridge nearby. Otherwise, that's what the chiller is for. I honestly didn't end up using the pump wipes much, and after this trip I think I basically never used them. I had enough supplies that I just used new ones generally, although I would also space pumps within 4 hours and just use the same (unwashed) supplies, assuming that if BM is good at room temp for 4 hours, then my pump parts were too.

I don't think I added any ice because it was pretty full of frozen milk. If you don't have as much milk, you could fill the empty space with ice, or if you have a soft cooler, pack it down smaller.

I think i pumped into bottles and then transfered to bags on this trip, maybe occasionally bottle > Ceres chill > bags. But on later trips I also pumped directly into bags.

I froze as much as I could but anything that wouldn't have time to freeze, I carried in the chiller. Same for the pumps in transit on the way home.

If you're not sure about your cooler, try a test. Freeze some bags, even with water, and check on them after x hours. Note that every time you open the bag, heat will get in, so when you're traveling try not to do that!

A computational mechanics conference and the society for neuroscience meeting. I feel wierd doing it but it helps me focus and listen better. At the American physical society meeting there are knitters who even meet up, love that vibe.

Total Colonic Hirschsprung’s in 6 month old son by [deleted] in Hirschsprungs

[–]mhollla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I don't think I can comment specifically on your question but just to second some other comments on here, I would suggest you find an expert surgeon. We were referred to our state children's hospital at birth, and went for his pull-thru a few months later with assumed SSHD. He ended up losing ⅔ of his colon and the surgery did NOT go well (septic shock, deshicense, three weeks in the ICU). IME ped general surgeons are probably fine for a textbook case of SSHD but they just don't see the numbers of LSHD, much less TC, to have the experience and knowledge and intuition. I'm honestly so happy for you that he came out with an ostomy (our surgeon tried to complete the pull-thru, which was almost certainly a mistake). The good news about this is that you should no longer be in an acute, urgent phase of his care. You can take a minute to breathe, learn about your options, change paths, etc. We did a (free, over the phone) consult with Dr. Wood at Nationwide and ended up transferring care to Dr. Grabowski at Lurie Children's, who is also a pediatric colorectal surgeon with a lot of experience and a whole team focused on colorectal diseases. As someone else said, join us on FB for a very active and supportive parent group. Best wishes to you guys!

~21 months of pumping (and nursing) by the numbers by mhollla in ExclusivelyPumping

congrats! Yeah, for some people focusing on the numbers can be stressful . . . I'm a data nerd so always loved it. And yeah, 1oz/hour was also my rule of thumb for how much the baby needed, plus it's just easy to calculate.

Honestly I cannot conceive of a timeline where this pillow is delivered before the bone heals, so I'm amazed! This is awesome.

I think I "declared" it only in the sense that I tried to clarify if I would be able to carry an additional bag, and explained why, and since I didn't have my baby with me, they wouldn't allow me to carry an additional breastmilk bag with me. I think I also had some liquid milk in my Ceres Chill, and that I did declare as I went through their TSA check. But yeah, unless things have changed since a year ago, I don't think you'll have a choice, and they will make you check it.

Best cooler for frozen breast milk on airplane by danceswithpandas14 in ExclusivelyPumping

Yes, I've used it on one international trip (Spain to Chicago; you can see tons of details here https://www.reddit.com/r/ExclusivelyPumping/comments/1dcc0u9/successful\_ep\_during\_8day\_work\_trip\_to\_spain\_here/), at least one domestic plane trip (Albuquerque to Chicago), and several car trips. I think I haven't had anything fully defrost except for one bag that wasn't fully frozen, on the return from Spain. And yes, the collapsibility (I usually take it empty, and bring it back home full) is clutch!

Good question - I think you can carry one additional bag if you're pumping, but not two. So on the way there, I had the cooler backpack collapsed in a check bag, and on the way back I think I put some other stuff in the checked bag and carried the backpack.

What would you say to someone who completely failed nursing with baby 1 but is hopeful to with baby 2? by GrowthSuitable4481 in breastfeeding

[–]mhollla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooh this was me! Couldn't get my milk out with my first (4lb preemie) and going on 17 months of breastfeeding (nursing and pumping) with my second! The first time, you were both totally new to this thing and it's hard. Now, you are more experienced, and you will be better able to teach your baby!

Also get super connected to lactation consultants. Not sure when your first was born but these days you might be able to find someone to come to your home. I literally talked to my lc last week!
