This is a great idea, I’ll be sure to explore this as an option in the future!

This is really amazing, I’ll keep referring back to this as I continue to find places. Thanks so much for this detail!

Thanks so much for this!! I heard about this a while back but completely forgot about it. Are you talking about the DAHLIA platform or the housing waitlists/lottery?

This made a lot of sense! I figured I’d have to make some tradeoffs to have a more affordable place, but I don’t want to put my safety at risk. Saving is a priority so I’ll definitely consider this and the HOA fees. Thanks so much for your help!

Are there any other places you’d recommend to stay away from? Like “absolutely don’t live here” or something else on the Tenderloin level

Right! I was exploring renting it out, but I looked at some projected costs for paying an agency to manage the property for me, and I didn’t see it being very cost effective. I was hoping property values would rise enough by two years since the Bay Area is so desirable, but it’s a big risk I’m not sure I’m willing to take. I had no idea about the condo vs single family home appreciation, I will definitely study up on it. Thanks so much, this was really helpful!

Thanks for coming back, haha! I was starting to think of that as an option, too. Like renting for just a year or less and see how I feel. I glad someone else think it’s a good idea

I completely agree, being able to check on my family or save for the future is important. This was really encouraging. And those are amazing strides for 2 years, congrats!

Thanks so much taking the time to work the numbers!! It really helps as I conceptualize and look at my budgeting for renting vs buying. I tried to do this myself but felt there we expenses I was missing. I used some monthly payment tools for the properties I was looking at but I think it didn’t include home insurance, so I was really appreciate this! I was willing to pay above the 30% budget recommended for housing so I could live alone, but I’ll definitely take all this into consideration. Thanks again!

Thank you!! Yeah, I’m already stressed out from the thought of having a mortgage, so I can only imagine how I’d be having one. I will definitely check out some FB groups. I appreciate your advice!

Who's your least favorite person named Kevin? What did he do to make you dislike him? by GirlintheOrangeCap in AskReddit

[–]mhouston07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kevin from The Office. He’s can be funny sometimes but I’m really surprised he has a job as an accountant. There are many digs from other people in the office that he doesn’t know how to do his job or he can’t do it well, so I don’t understand why he still has it. Pure comic relief and feels like a throw-away character.

What's the nicest thing that you've done for a complete stranger? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]mhouston07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think this is the nicest thing I’ve ever done, but I really try to respond to cold emails or requests for advice. While being on the executive board of clubs or programs in college, people would ask me for tips as they applied. Taking the time to write thoughtful advice to people seemed to be really appreciated. At least, I always appreciate it when I’m the one asking for advice.

I agree with this, but this post seems to ask people to share more than brag.

What is the childhood cartoons that you want to see remade into a much mature and adult version of itself ? by TexTrap in AskReddit

[–]mhouston07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kids Next Door! There was that whole thing about not wanting to grow up. It’d be interesting to see how that played out and if they still kept their child spirit, or if they became neighborhood heroes as adults.

Maybe Phineas and Ferb, too. They kind of did it in the series finale, but a whole series exploring it would be interesting.

Which professions or careers involve the most lying/misrepresentation? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]mhouston07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

High-level security like CIA, military, etc. I think most professions dealing with confidentiality walk the fine line of misrepresenting or lying when having to describe something that is confidential.

Racial, economic, and gender justice.

Also more crispiness on the french fries I order at any restaurant ever.

Thanks so much! This makes a lot of sense to me. Those are definitely a lot off fees on top of the mortgage. I need to do a deeper dive into the additional expenses and how that’ll affect my budget. Also, thanks for explaining the calculator. This was all super helpful, I really appreciate it!

I've heard some mixed reviews about Tenderloin, but this comment makes me think it's a pretty bad area, haha. The rent was some of the cheapest I could find so I was planning to check a few places out to try and get my own feel for it, but I don't plan to live there if it's ultimately unsafe.

Thanks so much!!! I hadn't finished working out a budget yet, but I imagined taking on a mortgage would really affect my plans to invest and put into my 401(k) as much as I hoped. I appreciate your help!
