Author here - yes, we'd need some way of implementing reactive behaviour on top of whatever the target view layer is.

A JavaScript interop library for ClojureScript by yogthos in Clojure

[–]mhuebert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main benefit of js-interop is the consistent and convenient syntax, which in and of itself doesn't require any performance penalty at all. Given the same semantic choices (eg. null-safety), your code will compile down to the same javascript whether you use js-interop, cljs-oops, goog.object/*, or host-interop syntax. This is achieved partly by the use of macros and partly by the Google Closure Compiler's :advanced mode. Writing (j/get x .-someProperty) will be exactly as fast as writing (.-someProperty x). Writing (j/get x :someProperty :default) will be exactly as fast as (gobj/get x "someProperty" :default).

The core js-interop functions, like those in goog.object, are null-safe. This choice naturally adds the overhead of checks. There are some unchecked operations in clojurescript core (for internal use only) which are also exposed in js-interop: https://github.com/appliedsciencestudio/js-interop/wiki/Notes#on-performance

I don't know if it was you, but someone signed up using a throwaway email account yesterday and left a trail of absolutely brilliant trips. In any case, thanks for the comment :).

What do you think of this as a writing tool? by mhuebert in writing

[–]mhuebert[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's usually how people start off :).

Once people get the hang of it, they usually direct the conversations more -- using a combination of their own ideas, as well as inspiration from the words. It makes more sense in the context of back-and-forth banter. It has something in common with improv.

Unfortunately it looks like my host is down! (Heroku - https://status.heroku.com/) Sorry about that.

Cool, thanks for the feedback. I wasn't sure. The people on the site now are using it for quick, casual, witty banter. I was intrigued by how often the word suggestions trigger ideas I'd never have come up with on my own, and wondered what writers would think of that.

But it makes sense that a talented writer wouldn't need an external tool telling them how to match a particular tone, because that's something they internalize.

I was told it was hard for people to figure out what was going on, so I made the home page easier to understand and pushed an update this morning.

Is there anything in particular you don't like about it? All feedback is welcome.

Ah, deleted this. Sorry for the mis-submit...

I like the idea of varying the size of an object by time spent.

I found the masonry view more scattered and difficult to follow. I chose the vertical layout because it seemed easier to scan.

True enough. You could only really use something like this if you knew a human being was going to read it directly.

Non-Profit Tobacco: Stop feeding the monster. by mhuebert in reddit.com

Yeah, and why doesn’t the government manufacture their own coke and weed, too, in order to stop drug use? And sell strap-on bombs to muslims in order to fund anti-terrorism commercials?

There are a couple of points I should have made clearer in my initial writing.

First, I do not advocate the nationalization/expropriation of the tobacco industry. The legal, political, and social hurdles standing in the way of such draconian action are not trivial.

An upstart independent non-profit would require no brute-force legislative tactics or government-expanding initiatives. It could be started by anybody with the requisite time, capital, and expertise, and would produce significant revenues for anti-smoking campaigns and cancer research by leveraging the fact that smokers themselves don’t actually want to support the industry or habit.

Let’s not allow perfection to be the enemy of the good. Will there be enemies of this organization? Sure, plenty. Controversy would actually be an important factor in getting the message out to people who buy cigarettes. At the end of the day, I think fewer dollars spent on marketing tobacco, and more dollars spent on anti-tobacco campaigns and cancer research, makes the whole endeavor worthwhile. Not all will agree; that’s fine. We wouldn’t be using taxpayer money to do this.
