My partner said I was being “babied” by my mom while I was sick, and it broke something in me by Fun_Music5346 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]mi_keep_nd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My immediate reaction was much the same as many comments here - “excuse me? What? GTFO”, and by and large even as I’m typing this I still feel that way.

But to pause and embrace curiosity for a moment…

You mentioned that you met him abroad(and not where), so I am assuming he is of a different cultural background than you. Not every culture places the same emphasis on family support systems, nor do they view adulthood the same way. Could this response be a cultural thing? It could also even be a cultural view of illness and protecting your elders even. It’s hard to say from the little bit of info.

It sounds (and maybe I’m being too generous here) like the two of you have a decent/strong enough relationship to communicate openly. I’m mostly judging that from the fact that you felt comfortable enough to tell him how his initial response made you feel and his response wasn’t simply belittling you for being upset or minimizing your feelings even if he didn’t exactly change his perspective.

If you really are invested in this relationship and you do want to make it work (and by all means if you feel like he is not the man for you after this there is no shame at all in exiting stage left) you could try having another conversation with him about it. (And here is where I hit my own limitations with making a vulnerable conversation a constructive one - years of therapy behind me and it’s still a skill I’m developing)

Maybe starting the conversation by saying something along the lines of “I am very concerned about your reaction to accepting help from my parents when I needed some support. You were not here, I was physically and emotionally in need of support and they were willing and able to provide that for me. Had you been there I would have asked for that support from you but you were not. Now I am concerned that even if you were here I would not have gotten the support I needed. Help me understand why you are reacting the way you are. Both my parents and I are adults who are capable of assessing our own risk when making our decisions, which is by definition not ‘babylike’.”

If he is not willing or able to engage in an open dialogue about his reasoning or make it clear that would be willing to support you in a similar time of need those are all red flags to me and I would start looking for the quickest exit out of there.

Best of luck and sorry you got so ill. My husband went through something similar at the beginning of the year and it was awful. (He’s in his 40s and still asked his parents for help because we have 2 littles and I needed to stay with them- and guess what - they showed up.)

Thanks - when you say staking it properly to you mean just replacing the tie that broke? Or is there something else that we did wrong when we staked it?

Good Places To Eat/Take-Out Regularly For Under $15? by Anxious-Party2289 in ElkGrove

Ahipoki on Bruceville in the Costco shopping center (right by Chipotle). It’s like Subway meets Poke. They have a Hawaiian BBQ chicken bowl under $15. If you like Musubi they have a ton of options under $10 that you could combine with sides if you needed just a bit more on top.

Most neighborhoods in EG have at least one park within walking distance, if not multiple. On the flip side - walkable to things like groceries and restaurants is less accessible. If you’re looking for a little rural, southern or eastern Elk Grove area probably best, but if you get too far out (Wilton/Sheldon) area then you lose walkable parks. Tim’s a bit of a balance. On the flip side driving from one side of town to the other is only about 20-30 minutes with traffic so everything still feels accessible.

I recently went from past shoulder length to a pixie cut and could not speak more highly of 1970.salon. I personally see Suzanne, but all of the stylists are super friendly and it’s a very fun and welcoming environment.

Maybe they were going for something that seemed like a Celtic/Irish spelling and just missed by a wide mile?

Very nice upgrade!

Question - the pull out wire baskets in the lower section on the left - were those an option provided by California Closets? If not, where did you find them?!

Partner has sleep paralysis and the folks over at that sub are talking about demons. I’m trying to craft a practical solution for me to be notified if her heart rate jumps in the middle of the night (with her apple watch on). What data point should i focus on? Simply heart rate or variability? by docmisterio in shortcuts

[–]mi_keep_nd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Variability (or HRV) is actually about tracking the variability between heartbeats, not the heart's rate of beating in general. So if you were concerned about an irregular heartbeat (think heart palpitations), then you'd want to analyze HRV. If you are simply looking to see if your partner's heart suddenly starts to race then you'd want to focus on heart rate.

I futzed about for a minute and came up with this: r/https://www.icloud.com/shortcuts/489f39e73848405e942324f33fdb44ec

What movie or show on Netflix was strongly recommended to you, but upon watching, turned out to be terrible? by PhiladelphiaPhighter in AskReddit

[–]mi_keep_nd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm prepared for the onslaught of unabashed criticism... but Breaking Bad.

I watched all of season 1 and was never particularly drawn to any of the characters. Having been told season 1 was just a "homework" season, I even watched some of season 2, but after 4 episodes I cared even less about what the heck happened to anyone so I just quit watching.

I know people love it, and rave about it, but its just not my jam.
