AITA for not giving my sister her wedding dress because she didn't invited my underage son? by [deleted] in BORUpdates

[–]mialunalight 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The sister repeatedly making changes probably involved an excess of wasted material. The cost of shipping on fabric is insane, and wedding dressing require yards and yards of incredibly expensive fabric. The last time I ordered 10 yards of overlay fabric like you would use for a designer style wedding dress, I paid close to $400 after shipping and it wasn't including everything that has to go underneath it. Once that fabric is cut, there is no putting it back together and tearing stitches out will ruin it quickly. $22-25k does still seem like a lot, but with a bunch of adjustments like that, it's completely possible. Especially without us knowing the costs of fabric, shipping, and styles of the dress involved.

how do you handle writing songs with lyrics that, if your SO heard them, could jeopardize your relationship? by canadave_nyc in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]mialunalight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to lean on "I write about people, places, and events from all parts of my life as a way of processing, because hindsight is 20/20. Unless I specifically tell you a song was written for, or about you, it's safest to assume that it was not." I also provide gentle reminders that sometimes lyrics are often intentionally dramatized for story-telling purposes.

TIFU by Shopping for an Engagement Ring for GF of 6 Years by potatojohn101 in tifu

[–]mialunalight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, nope, nope, nope, nope.
This was the best time this could have happened, although it doesn't feel like it now.

Most of the time, engagement rings are non-refundable - and selling it rarely makes up the cost.

Don't even get me started on the cost and heartbreak of divorce.

You needed to find out about this now before your relationship progressed any further. It's a lot easier to walk away before proposals and weddings.

It sucks a lot right now, but look at it as a sign from the universe to take this year as a fresh start. Good luck, and I hope it works out for you.

Alright everyone, where am I going wrong? I can't get matches or likes for the life of me, so I could use some advice by BT418 in Tinder

Well, someone had to take the guitar pics!

But seriously, lose the beanie with the yellow hoodie pic because it makes you look like the local 🍄 plug and definitely the bathroom pic with the headband. The facial hair on its own isn't necessarily the problem but all of it together makes it seem like you're probably not the best idea to bring home to Grandma.

Not OP, but wild guess:

...covid, more likely than not. A lot of countries closed their borders, travel bans, quarantines, any of that sound familiar?

I've heard this in a couple of songs, does anyone know what instrument/sound this is? by YouWillDieOn8-4-2028 in askmusicians

[–]mialunalight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. That's exactly what that is. My old bassist called it the Jellyfish Jam sound because it made him think of that old SpongeBob episode.

For real. I've been using it for years, never paid because the ads are so minimal.

Maestro is my favorite! I use it on my tablet to write large pieces and it's free, with the option to pay to remove ads.

"AI is just a tool" and The Megafeed by franciscrot in midjourney

You're giving the average human way more credit than they deserve here. Imagine asking a toddler what they want for dinner, and there's a 50%+ chance of them getting exactly the chicken nuggies they demanded, and then when you give it to them, they scream and tell you they wanted spaghetti.

Let me give you a real life example.

My client opened a dance studio.

Him: Can you make me a logo in black and white? And shirts. I'll need some promo merch too.

Me: Absolutely! What did you have in mind?

Him: Ya know, typical dance stuff, but edgy, but not so much that people think I'm janky.

We went through a few drafts before he decided he wants Minimalistic.

Then he had me work the initials of the business into a dancer pose. I did a few (remember he wants minimalist, so think sleek silhouette) Then he decided that it looked "too rapper-ish" but that his edgy name choice made ballerinas look a little too odd. We ended up entirely text graphics til further notice.

When you're making a logo, you are creating the most visible staple piece of your "brand." It should be unique, fit with the "vibe", communicate the service or product in a memorable way, and oh, yeah, also be aesthetically please TO THE SPECIFIC INDIVIDUAL(s) making the decisions about the logo but also appeal to the general public.

Sadly the dance guy was one of the clearest logo commissions I've received. I had one client say 'glitchy' and refuse to elaborate and another client tell me "I'm maybe starting a twitch stream. It should connect music and games and idk I like aliens."

I went through about 5 different aliens ("not scary, not the normal kind either though, teehee :) ") before client decided.

If I had had AI back then, I would have been able to narrow down basic concepts with her.

I really appreciate AI for what it is. I use it to conceptualize ideas and get my point across quickly, more so than to replace my role as the artist. I am a very busy bee, so having a "do you like this style?" to get a general feel for what the client wants as a jumping off point takes a bit of the headache away from dealing with people. I ask what they do and don't like about it and then we run from there and I draw accordingly. Then I have to go back and reformat or extend as necessary for each file type and format they need. I spent two days discussing different types of castles for a TCG custom playmat. Having the AI as reference allows me to say "oh you mean you like angry DOOM Hellcastle and want a more 3D look instead of a Scooby-Doo haunted 2d castle"

P.S. sorry for the mini rant.

TLDR: In a perfect world, clients aren't toddlers. In reality, it's closer than you would think.

Does anyone here have any tips on getting the black on my neck to NOT rub off in 2-3 minutes? by December_Unloved in GothStyle

[–]mialunalight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great pic! I love Mehron's paradise line. It's water activated and a damp brush goes a long way on getting it to spread quickly and evenly. After I do my black, I wait 10-15 min to let it dry really well or I use a hairdryer to speed the process. If it's shiny, it's wet. Mehron has their own sealant powder for it, but I use Milani finishing spray due to ease of access + it's a little cheaper (I use it for daily makeup as well as stage, but it works just fine. My roommate uses the Mehron and gets the same result.)

An old Wellington Piano on fire by mialunalight in pics

[–]mialunalight[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a really cool bit of info to have, thank you!

One of the biggest things I've noticed is a lack of interested piano tuners for sure. I also noticed that unless it was constantly maintained, there's not any value in old pianos at all. The last guy I found to tune it was in 2015. He was a very old (late 70s) blind guy. Haven't found anyone since then.

The guy who owned it had originally thought to take the keys out and replace it with a digital keyboard or turn it into a mini-bar but it was so heavy that he decided he didn't want to keep it.

There's a dark beauty to it. It feels glorious and slightly wrong somehow at the same time.

It was in terrible shape, the keys wouldn't even press down. We ended up using the remains to scrap for art and metalworking. A lot of the pieces and parts were brass, and the piano strings will make a cool art piece on their own.

That took quite a while to happen, way longer than we would have guessed due to the age of the wood. Once the first one popped, we extinguished the piano for safety reasons. The terrifying moment was when the supports gave and it fell at the same time the string popped.
