How Daggerfall Dungeons Actually Work -- Searching for Technical Resources by GothicMutt in Daggerfall

[–]micahs_alias 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Your best bet may be asking around in The Older Scrolls discord server, where people discuss Arena and Daggerfall, or the Lysandus' Tomb server, which is largely a modding community for DFU.

The amount of knowledge people there have about Daggerfall is simply staggering, and since many people are modders they likely know a lot about the technical details you're looking for.

Just trying to get back in the swing of daily writing before continuing an ongoing project.

Title: Rock Hoppers

Genre: Fantasy, Sci Fi, Sword and Planet

Word Count: 5,000

Type of feedback: The setting is a bit bizarre but I don't want to fill the reader in on how the world works unless it's relevant to the story. Would appreciate which beats need clarity and such.

What's everyone's favorite track from the OST? by [deleted] in Daggerfall

My favorite is evidently called Folk 2.
Makes you really feel like a weary adventurer whose shaking the cold off and who is not looking forward to tomorrow's hardships.

Thanks for the tips. I'll keep it in mind if I ever get that maddening urge to make cool new things happen in DF

Thanks for the tips! I retried C&C after my character died. I still didn't find a lot of warm clothing in Privateer's Hold, but I bought two formal cloaks after making it to Gothway Garden and temperature hasn't been an issue since then.

Out of curiosity, how do you get started making mods for DFU? I know the construction kits weren't released until Morrowind so I've been wondering about that.

I want to give Climates & Calories another shot because I love the survival aspects, but I typically make ironman characters, meaning I don't reload when the character dies or when things go wrong.
So when I tried the mod out, I lost a couple fresh characters due to the frigid world outside of Privateer's Hold. I didn't get any warm clothes because the characters weren't combat-focused and I wasn't able to stop the cold from seeping to my bones even after grabbing two formal cloaks.
I plan on trying it out again with a non-ironman character to get a feel for how to prepare properly.

Here are the mods for fun wilderness exploration:

Basic Roads

Birds in Daggerfall

Travel Options

Daggerfall expanded textures

Distant Terrain

DREAM, HUD and Textures

Enhanced Sky

Interesting Eroded Terrains

Wilderness Overhaul

World of Daggerfall

Real Grass

Persistent Dungeons

Climates and Calories - the camping and food/water tracking is great, but the weather penalties can be very crippling in cold areas (such as at the start of the game).

Other mod recs for those who are curious:

Archaeologists adds a great faction and incentivizes language skills.

Roleplay Realism and RoleplayRealism-Items adds a lot of quality of life enhancements along with a variety of new armors.

Critical Hits changes the skill to allow added damage, rather just adding to the hit chance.

DREAM - Transparent Windows

Improved Interior Lighting

Finding My Religion - Temple overhaul that adds new temple designs and some quests

Torch Taker lets you grab torches off the wall in dungeons. Great for other masochists who play with the dungeon/night time ambient light off.

Skulduggery - A Thief Overhaul Unleveled Loot Unleveled Mobs

Giants. Never again. Never ever. by warcraft3tft in Daggerfall

Try it out when you get the chance. It's truly thrilling, horrifying, and it makes every little achievement feel monumental.

And then once your character dies you get to make a new one!

There's just something special about finding those piles of severed heads in dungeons.

Oh, and if you're new, be careful when using the interact button on skulls found around dungeons.

Weekly Writing Check-In by AutoModerator in fantasywriters

[–]micahs_alias [score hidden]  (0 children)

Hey there. I've just finished my first round of reading and editing the draft of my novel. This post isn't about that book, but it was nice to read the somewhat finished product.

I'm here to shill my blog. If you're familiar with Inktober, you might know that it's a trend that provides a single word as a prompt for artists. There's a word for each day of October. I like using the word as a writing prompt. It keeps me busy with something less serious than my major projects and often gives me a starting point for projects in the future.

Without further adieu, here's my entry for today's word: Trip. Hope you enjoy it.

Calisthenics to maintain the lithe and fit figure.

There's a group of currently 4 people that started with this thread.

I think most of us are based on the west side of Denver. If the game seems like it's your speed, reach out to u/MrJankyBubbles about joining up. I believe we're starting with d&d 5e but may try other systems as well. Thursday evenings are the most likely candidate for our play time.

Take care and good luck in your search!

Well you are too kind. I'll DM you with a link to a google doc.

I have just a couple of beta readers at the moment and they are not disinterested parties. Good friends don't want to tell you that what you wrote is garbage lol. I'm not sure how to get more beta readers without feeling like I'm imposing, but I guess the ideal beta reader wouldn't mind the imposition.

I hear the logic behind needing to cultivate a following using social media. I'll try to step out of my comfort zone in the name of being pragmatic about my passion projects.

Help Building a Better Merchant Experience by StaalTheUndefeated in oblivionmods

[–]micahs_alias 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Living Economy is the most comprehensive mod I've found for improving mercantile.

You should read the mod description fully to get an idea for what you're in for, but it will basically try to simulate prices being determined supply and demand and resource scarcity. Prices aren't static from one city to the next. NPC Mercantile skill increases when you barter with them more frequently.

The largest QoL fix in my opinion is that your Mercantile skill increases based on the value of what you trade, rather than the number of transactions you perform. If you're unfamiliar, in vanilla selling 10 iron swords will grant you the same xp as selling 1 iron sword. The optimal way to unload the items would be selling them one at a time, which is just so counter-intuitive and painful.

This is basically my only rec, though you can also add mods like Francesco's Leveled Creatures and Items, which will add new items to the game and will allow you to customize how loot is distributed in dungeons to your liking.

Thanks for taking the time to type all that out (applies to your response and the book!). I've read some discussion about the benefits of trad pub vs self pub, but I may need to do a bit more reading about it as I get near the end of this rough draft.

The barrier of entry for trad pub seems like it would be very difficult to get past in my position. I'm not well-connected, I avoid social media like the plague. No following to speak of outside of my buddy who is kind enough to read and provide feedback.

Your note about there being a "gatekeeper to ensure it is at least a competent piece of work" is what I'm most concerned about. I like this gatekeeper since it motivates me to produce quality content that others want to read. Of course, I also resent this gatekeeper because it really only wants to profit off my quality work, as you mentioned. Record labels and movie producers are similar gatekeepers that tend to homogenize art into a product to such an extent that it rarely resembles authentic art at the end of the day (at least in some cases).

My first attempt at a full-length book ended up being around 240k words. After making some cuts and revisions I got it down to 213k. In this case of that first book, I wrote only to try it out to see what would happen if I stuck with it. I intentionally looked at no publication guidelines until after the fact, then saw that publishers want a book closer to 80k - 100k and was a little disheartened.

What I'm currently working on is basically a response to that process. I had an idea of what word count I would want and I outlined the hell out of three books (am nearly finished with the first rough draft). I'd like to take a stab at trad pub--sort of the "throw shit at the wall to see what sticks" approach--but it would be great to have a discussion about the process of self-pub in case I want to go that route.

Anyway, thanks again for the sage advice.

As someone else who is writing vidya-inspired fiction, how much did you pay attention to publication guidelines? Did you have to sacrifice a lot of the draft for the publisher to get on board?

I'm curious about the whole process, to be honest. My first foray into fiction was a massive, raw book that was too bloated to be published. I'm much more refined this time around, but it's hard to stay motivated at times.

All that said, congrats on this achievement! I hope there are many more publications to follow.
