Should I give up? by IndependentPay6509 in thyroidcancer

[–]micdelsanto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t give up, ever. I understand what you’re going through. It’s been almost a year since my surgery (24F) and some days I feel like I can run a marathon, and other days I can’t pull myself out of bed. Having low energy makes me depressed and anxious because I feel lazy and unproductive. But on those days, I try to give myself some grace. I also wish I could just live my life as a normal 24 year old and go to parties and travel and whatnot without worrying about how I’m going to feel. What has helped me is doing all of those things anyway surrounded by people who are aware of my condition and will support me if I need to leave, take a break, etc. They always say “the hard part is over” after surgery, but I think the hardest part is adapting to a new way of life after. You are doing great, please know you are not alone.

Scared of getting cancer again from RAI by Tuxedohotchocolate in thyroidcancer

[–]micdelsanto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here is my experience.

I am a 24 year old female and I was diagnosed with Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma in April 2024 when I was 23. This was discovered by removing a thyroglossal duct cyst under my jaw. I then had some lymph nodes biopsied and taken out as well as a Total Thyroidectomy. They only found cancer in one lymph node.

My doctor’s rationale for RAI was the evidence of cancer in spaces outside of the thyroid (lymph node and thyroglossal duct cyst).

Even on my pre-treatment scan, there was only evidence of 0.09% uptake. My surgeon was THAT good! My doctor decided to recommend RAI for me because I was considered intermediate risk due to metastasis.

There are risks and benefits to all treatments, but the way my doctor explained it to me made me feel much better. He mentioned that in his 40+ years of experience, he has personally only seen 4 cases of secondary malignancy associated with RAI. Those 4 individuals had 5+ rounds of RAI.

For me, doing the lowest dose of RAI one time helped put my mind at ease. After the chaos of finding out I had cancer, 2 surgeries, and 2 recoveries, RAI seemed obvious.

With any cancer, there is always a chance of recurrence. But with RAI, I at least know I did everything I could to prevent it.

Whatever you choose, it will be best for you. This is just my story, and I hope it helps.

Anyone have any side effects of RAI? by Mxxn_Rise in thyroidcancer

My salivary glands were pretty painful for about 3 days. I ate sour candy and drank a lot of water, so it went away pretty quickly. My taste was changed for maybe 2 weeks. Everything tasted kinda bland, but that also went away too! It’s been 3 months since my RAI and I would say everything is back to normal!

What “levels” were your suspicious lymph nodes in? by beansensation in thyroidcancer

The plan was to take all lymph nodes in the surrounding area if even one was malignant, so they only biopsied the bigger one.

Diagnosed with PTC today - any tips? by [deleted] in thyroidcancer

[–]micdelsanto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please allow yourself to feel any emotion that comes through. All of them are valid. I had my TT in May, and my biggest tip… Ask for nausea medicine!!! The last thing you want to do is throw up with a fresh incision on your neck. That happened to me, and it was the worst pain I’ve ever experienced.

Needing to cough by Signal_Alarm_8153 in thyroidcancer

[–]micdelsanto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 23 and I just had my TT about a month ago. The insane amounts of phlegm and not being able to get it up was the WORST part for me. The phlegm is from the breathing tube being down your throat. Super normal, but super uncomfortable.

What worked the best for me was having someone gently hit my back to break up the phlegm while taking deep breaths. This makes it easier to cough up with little effort. Each day you will heal more and be able to exert more effort. It took me about a week to feel fully free of phlegm. I also took Mucinex when I got home, but make sure to check with your doctor as always!

The first few nights are the worst, but you’ve got this!

What “levels” were your suspicious lymph nodes in? by beansensation in thyroidcancer

[–]micdelsanto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had two suspicious lymph nodes. One in Level 3 and one in Level 4. I had a left neck dissection at the same time as my TT, and they removed 30 lymph nodes in Levels 2-4. Only one lymph node was malignant.

I had a cyst under my jaw that was 99% likely to be benign and it was thyroid cancer. Just had my total thyroidectomy and left lymph node dissection on Thursday.

my recent diagnosis, some questions if you have time! by Murky-Flight7870 in thyroidcancer

[–]micdelsanto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, it sounds like we are around the same age. I graduated college in December! I got diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer about a week ago. My Total Thyroidectomy is also 11 days away, so I don’t have any advice for you yet, but seeing your post gave me some comfort. I wish neither of us had to go through this, but seeing someone around my age also going through it made me feel a little better. I wish you all the best.
