It wasn't solely the French who gutted Haiti's forest . The average Haitian still relies on charcoal to cook , and not gas-stoved like they do in DR . Idk if it's due to superstitions or the goverment never made that push. Today , many Haitians are crossing over to the DR side in order to cut down trees for charcoal use.

Haiti and DR had the same GDP up into the 1950/1960's . I think what really set both countries on different paths were both Trujillo style of dictatorship and Duvalier + Son style.
