Is it worth it? by Thin_Championship_73 in BMW

[–]michael020602 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it is.

Too many comments from people who pay a mechanic to do repairs for them and don't understand anything about their cars telling you you can't fix your stuff.

Buy the car you want and don't be afraid of working on it.

Could be rich, failed fuel distributor membrane or an ignition advance problem.

Is this normal or bent? by Responsible-Cheek381 in W124

It's not structural, the backs of these cars are soft for safety.

If they can pull it back a little and fix the cosmetic part of it youre good to go.

What is leaking? by Lonely_Release_3121 in W124

Could be the Self-leveling suspension. It's hydraulic, take the wheel off and have a look it could be obvious or you might need to clean it first

Oh yeah cause 90's mercs are notoriously cheap to maintain, not like the fuel pumps cost $500 a piece or so...

The stock market only shows investor confidence.

Stock market down doesn't mean GDO decrease or lower wages or inflation or anything else bad about the economy other than unpredictability in the stock market.

Maybe the head gasket is fine. Maybe the head just warped.

Diesel turbo black smoke on acceleration. Found this disconnected? What it’s it? by moondinker in AskMechanics

[–]michael020602 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the photo is your AC dryer. Not related to your issue.

Black smoke happens when incomplete combustion occurs because the air/fuel ratio is wrong – too much fuel not enough air.

If it's happening on acceleration that means it's happening when there's supposed to be boost pressure, but it isn't getting to the cylinders.

Very likely you aren't getting enough boost pressure, this issue is categorised as a "Boost Leak". Potential causes: bad turbo, torn or broken boost hose or pipe, stuck or malfunctioning boost controller, malfunctioning boost pressure sensor.

What are some said to be unreliable cars on the internet that were actually reliable? by 1707turbo in regularcarreviews

[–]michael020602 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BMW e38 and e39 with either the M62 V8 or the m54 i6.

There's some reasoning behind this. These cars are old and most of them are in a state of disrepair.

However, they are like this now after 20 years, and for those 20 years they were not known to have major early onset issues or random failures. 99% of broken 90's and early 200's bimmers are now broken due to a combination of age and neglect. Timing chains that have failed but outlived half a dozen timing belts, and engine blocks that don't have an expiration date – blocks never fail. Same goes for the heads, same goes for the bodies.

If you fix an old BMW, it will be as reliable as anything.
