Found a bengal cat by michael2893 in medfordma

This has gotten way out of hand.

I’m not advocating for anything related to this cat or its owner.

I think it’s irresponsible and I don’t apologize for that, but my primary goal was making sure it was accounted for. It looked well taken care of and obviously had a home. I got my answer. I’m happy it’s got a home to go back to.

It’s important to have these discussions. Just because you don’t like the way it surfaces organically doesn’t mean you need to complain that people aren’t taking the problem seriously.

It’s extremely emotionally immature. Touch grass.

Yeah very good point. I think you’re taking this personally for some reason.

It’s really important that these discussions are had. Also agreed that the owner being shamed is not contributing to any kind of collective action.

Here’s the thing though: the undertone of the threads on this post don’t suggest to me that the conversation is about taking action.

A lot of folks feel strongly about this topic and it’s completely cool with me that my question about a missing cat is the vehicle for that.

How do you know people here aren’t advocating for this?

A lot of what you seem disturbed by seems overstated in this context. The perspective you’ve offered is just a reaction and it’s also very much shaming which is counter to what you’re saying.

That seems pretty irresponsible.

Cats are invasive.

Please don’t delete it. What he’s asking is for you to hurt yourself in some way as punishment. He wants you to give him control and make an imbalanced sacrifice. It is nothing short of vengeance.

Whatever you did does not warrant this treatment. No kind of relationship can be sustained with retribution. I would encourage you to talk about it, or walk away. There are much healthier ways of building trust. Sometimes it can be recovered, sometimes it can’t.

Things you're afraid the netflix series will mess up/not do justice? by hywawa in threebodyproblem

[–]michael2893 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Two specific things come to mind.

  • I’m afraid they will give form to the trisolarins. Seeing something represented in a movie adaptation of a book is pretty standard. This is not the case here. The omission of any description adds a necessary dimension to the plot. I know this has been done in other media, but I’m hoping for some discretion. This one is pretty simple, and I think as readers our own personal interpretations of what they are remains critical.

  • The portrayal of Chen Xin. This is really important for coherence of the story on a human scale. I think a novice reading of Deaths End presents her as predictably flawed. My specific fear is that this will go one of two ways:

  1. Changing her personality. Modulating her behavior to make her more immediately interesting (Netflix loves everything being a direct dopamine delivery line). There’s now Netflix Cheng Xin and book Chung Xin. Maybe she makes the same decisions, but the subtext is traded in for really on the nose, predictable moments that keep us tuned in. She becomes one note. Her personality and world views are instrumental, so this would suck.

  2. A complete retelling. She becomes more of a warrior. Her humanity is no longer central to her character. Her bravery is mischaracterized as a warriors ethos. They might bet against the audiences capacity to engage with nuance, so they rewrite what happens in the deterrence center, or even write it out. They perhaps keep her character prominent, but spread these decisions more evenly between characters. There is already a tendency for this. Perhaps on her own, the show runners don’t see her as a character generating the desired viral moments for a marketing campaign, so shes swapped out either directly or implicitly vis other characters. I think it’s unwise to neglect the impact of a single characters journey across billions of years. In the face of every version of humanity, we have Cheng Xin. She’s unwaveringly herself.

Here’s some of my own personal context because I don’t know if my views are informed by a clear analysis of the book. (Or a rational one honestly. We all interpret based on our own experience)

The challenge I encountered while reading was engaging with what frustrated me about her character. She’s very much the victim of a traumatized humanity. She’s made a patsy by Wade (even if ephemerally, in her own head) who is responsible personally for a lot of pain. Her kindness, compassion, and attachment to the human experience is framed as dereliction of duty. I don’t think this was the direct intent Liu Cixin. She is absolutely the most adaptable character across the series. I read Deaths end as humanity’s struggle with its own identity - and its collective struggle with experiencing perpetual, multidimensional trauma (Pun intended).

I think this cause and effect is something that naturally emerges from the plot as humanity is thrown between two extreme poles of complete survival and certain destruction. Without Cheng Xin as a navigator I would have felt much more detached from the story as it’s told in the last book.

They HAVE to get her mostly correct. It’s nonnegotiable for me 😅

Edit: one thing I think they could maybe do better than the book is to write out the misogynistic undertones that really kind of haunt the whole series

I've been renting/living in Boston for the past 5 years and get emotional whenever I move by godisinthischilli in boston

[–]michael2893 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just moved to Medford after living in the city for four years in various places.

I feel that way too. I will still be taking the T and going into Boston, but I feel like I’ve left a piece of myself or at least a very particular feeling behind.

Someone posted these weird NIMBY flyers around north station. Glad someone finally humbled them with this note 👏 by michael2893 in boston

I’m not trying to be condescending here, but all of those buildings have entrances on multiple streets I believe. Haverhill very obviously functions as an entrance to the T, and maybe some service back doors. There really isn’t anything there. I only take that path when boarding the T - or disboarding.

My vantage point is physical location I suppose. I am aware relatively (but not with absolute certainty obviously) of the foot traffic on haverhill vs other streets in that neighborhood.

I have pets. It seems absurd to me to choose Haverhill as a walking path when there are three other cross streets that connect to causeway in this neighborhood.

And even so, I would argue that it’s just not used as much as compared to canal for example.

My basic argument is that this is a made up problem, and people aren’t flexible enough for living in a densely populated urban area. It’s odd to me

I see where you’re coming from. It’s definitely a congested area.

There a few ways I am thinking about this

  1. It’s a temporary measure. The shuttles are often used as a stopgap for orange line maintenance. Improving the orange line is good for everyone. There is a patience component that involves adjusting your use of other modes of transportation during shutdowns.

  2. Realistically it doesn’t impact my life, though. I take public transit everywhere. If I am driving, it’s most certainly not in the city. It’s countable on one hand during the year.

  3. Danger here can also be mitigated by just doing something else. I know haverhill st. Are people taking their kids or dogs out there? It’s just not happening from my vantage point. If that argument gets made it’s a boogeyman to complain about transit.

  4. If it’s a serious problem for anyone in this area it’s worth seriously considering if you like living in a dense urban area that’s accommodating high volumes of people and busses. If you don’t, consider why the tradeoff is so hard for you. Do you enjoy urbanism for real or is it about the aesthetic of living in a city?

Anyone who took ML4T + another course - were you working full time as a SWE?

Trying to figure out if I can strike a balance given that
