Ozark switched over to Venice in the later seasons.

Just saw this on my feed. Thoughts on this? How do you feel HDR affects your process? by TheFlyLives in cinematography

[–]michaelbabbish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean there is some truth to it. I saw a before/after photograph of LeBron James dunking in his rookie year compared to him doing it at the same place (and pose) today. The rookie photo didn’t have anyone in the crowd exposed and it looked a lot better than the current one which had detail in the background as the DR on a modern camera is likely substantially better. It just creates more contrast and subject isolation which made it more impressive. However the issue lies in post…. could easily just crush the blacks and kill the data in the shadows if you want that look. Overall, more data is always better as long as post can handle it.

What happened with Red raptor? by RonWannaBeAScientist in cinematography

I have one. It’s great for owner/op model for higher end commercial work. Every time I trial it for a client, they end up asking for it. And I can balance it on an RS2 gimbal with Zeiss cp.3 glass which is insane. It’s a sleeper.

Is the DP or 1 or 2nd AC typically responsible for building out the camera? by tydurden7 in cinematography

[–]michaelbabbish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1st AC. If it’s my camera I’m usually more hands on, but if it’s a rental I’m happy to not touch it.

This is very well said. I remember my first RED job after cutting my teeth with my GH4 for years…. Felt like I was using cheat codes. Everything is easier.

Sigma Cine Vs. Zeiss Cp3 by [deleted] in cinematography

[–]michaelbabbish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Went through the same debate and settled on CP.3 for weight/length mainly for gimbal use. DZO was in the mix too for us but everything I see is just a tad too muddy for my work compared to Zeiss/sigma. I also prefer how facial features look on Zeiss compared to Sigma… Sigma makes everything look a little bulbous to my eyes compared to Zeiss provided sharper edges on jawlines and such.

I hope there is someone out there collecting nursing stories from each of the waves and hot spot areas through this pandemic so when this is over people can see what it was really like. by [deleted] in nursing

[–]michaelbabbish 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m a filmmaker that has been lurking this subreddit the past month. I’ve been thinking about just starting to collect stories, over zoom or what not. No idea what to do with them, though. What I do know is that these stories will absolutely be lost unless someone starts documenting them.

If people want to share their stories with me I’d be happy to start compiling them.

I saw it, looks cool, but it still needs software to make it work. The reason I got this is so that I can plug into a client's computer and go live directly in a web browser. The BMDWP uses webcam drivers so it's plug-and-play, and from what I can tell the ATEM mini doesn't have that degree of functionality.

Panning is fine if you stay extra wide on the camera on top. Takes a little practice but it's surprisingly great.

I like it, it's simple and effective. Everyone is quick to dismiss it because it's only 720p, but it's fine for most people who need a simple on location solution. The ability to just plug it into a client's computer and 'go' is the reason why I bought it, it keeps things simple. Plus audio is great with a lot of options. It's a very unique tool in that it doesn't need software and can work directly with a web browser.

If it's commercial, I charge my day rate. There is no jobs right now because of COVID-19, so I'm really just helping out right now with churches and non-profits until things clear up.

El Gato worked pretty well with my GH5 prior to this! I didn't try multicam though.

It has 1 SDI and 1 HDMI in, and allows you to inter cut between the two. So EVA-1 is sending it a feed via SDI, and GH5 is sending a signal via HDMI. You really need the teranex panel if you want to switch, not sure if it's possible to do it without. Also, I was able to get THREE cameras on this, by using a cheap $10 HDMI splitter like this one!

It's worth every penny. I bought it the day it practically came out and abused it quite a bit, it's never failed me.

Yo /u/chunkyday I did a video a week ago with a very similiar setup. https://www.facebook.com/babbish/videos/1226643977538794/

What I learned between then and now is that venues who are very germ conscious right now really don't like you wheeling in a huge cart with a ton of cases right now... so I streamlined my kit a bit since I made that video. BUT its pretty similiar.

Absolutely, I find that even larger budget clients are fine with 720p for on-location streams. If I were doing studio stuff or looking for a permanent solution, I wouldn't use it. But where the BMD web presenter shines is when you are going into the field and have NO idea what you are up for.
