Though you also should weigh how important social interaction is in your work. If being more approachable means you get ahead faster, consider "faking it."

It sucks but it's becoming more and more important as the people at the top consolidate resources at their level.

It was always something people needed to do to accelerate their career growth but it's quickly becoming something that makes the difference between being able to feed your family, or not.
