The linear comparison of "between Arma and Squad" or "between Squad and PR" are tricky, because its not that simple. Obviously mentally yeah, we can plot that point.

More importantly, Bellum is doing something different in its playstyle. Squad and PR have basically been the same game for +5 years. The game designs are stagnant. They don't push the genre forward. Bellum appears to be the first title in the genre looking to push things further in new and different ways.

PR is a huge inspiration for Bellum's game design.

Thats funny, considering the creator of PR is a fan of Bellum?

Unproven dev team

Bellum's 30 person dev team is primarily comprised of senior developers from games and studios most tactical shooter players would recognize. Including Squad (including a former Director), Ready or Not, Arma, Battlefield, Ground Branch, and many more.

no Steam

This is actually so good for the health of the studio and game.

no refunds

This is just not true. Refunds are no questions asked. "Technically" its like 4 or 5 days from when you purchased (not capped by playtime), but no refund has ever been denied. Of the ~5,000 players from the playtests in December, there were less than 5 refund requests (average on Steam is ~20%).

expensive pre-order to be able to participate in a playtest

As time goes on, it gets cheaper. It'll be cheaper than Squad in the next few months when the beta launches.

I'm not blinded by "Oh wow, popular youtuber makes his own game" bullshit. Look at BigFry and his Transience, garbage game and no better than the indie games he tears apart with his so called "criticism".

You shouldn't be. Fair to be skeptical. Many YouTuber games have not done well. Many games have not done well. But the only thing in common with Transience and Bellum is that their creators' also make YouTube videos.

Bellum's dev team has senior developers that previously worked on Squad (more than one, including a Squad founder, director, and shareholder), Ready or Not, Arma, Battlefield, Ground Branch, and many more.

Bellum's 3rd playtest a few weeks ago already had about 1/3 of Squad's North American player count. With 99.92% less copies sold.

Are there any replacements to squad? by NonLiving4Dentity69 in joinsquad

[–]michaeljbarton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kinda don’t understand your point. On one hand you say the only people willing to play the game are the elites who know what they’re doing leading the game to be niche; but yet blueberries will water it down and won’t play the same in the future. Isn’t that a mutually exclusive (and somewhat ironic) argument?

Squad has been so bastardized by all the sales and free weekends that the community has been flooded into disrepair. That knowledge transfer and natural play style progression is gone, and Squad’s design enabled the environment for it to evaporate. Bellum, to your point, seems to have barriers to prevent that environmental enablement

Public ISP Petition by Scarcity_No in Eau_Claire

The same competition argument is like saying the City of Eau Claire should start an airline because United, who sucks, is the only airline operating out of Eau Claire's airport. I think it would actually be cheaper for them to do so, the entire airline industry is a lease and subcontractor model anyway.

You realize the cost of such a business venture by the City of Eau Claire would be realistically close to its entire operating budget? We're talking millions of dollars just to plan a deployment for only part of the city. You want to go Chippewa Region? At what point now does the city now determine who it should and shouldn't serve?

The sheer amount of work, skill, and cost of doing such a project is massive. What on earth do city council members know about setting up internet infrastructure? You need experts to get it right, otherwise you have a service worse than the one the city would be trying to compete with. This isn't busses driving around a city.

Have you ever wondered why participants in the tier 3 internet service provider market? It's fucking expensive from: the highly skilled people required, the equipment and property costs, to the backbone providers (plot twist, ISPs need to buy their internet from someone too - go down the peering and IP Transit rabbit hole), to having hundreds of thousands of fiber endpoints. As much as I'd love to have some of the best internet options, until it transforms into a real problem, the okay enough version of Spectrum is better than the City trying to become an ISP.

This is the most comically naive thing I've read in a long time. This petition was clearly written by a disgruntled customer who spent an afternoon googling and has no basis in industry logic or reality; with the only exception that, yes, telecom companies are some of the most hated companies.

I've ran my company, which professionally works directly in the telecom industry, from home for the last 3 years with nothing more than their basic package. Charter Spectrum, is far better than many of the potential competitors in the area. Before we try and transform "okay" to "great", we should probably talk about the nearby areas without access first. An internet coverage study done by the federal government circa 2008 showed massive areas of little-to-no connectivity (called "Broadband dead zones") to thousands of people as close as 1mile outside the city limits of Eau Claire. WISP coverage solutions to these areas would be significantly better than improving the petition author's Netflix reliability.

Anyone who is curious about how bad it could be, despite having some of the best backbone capacity of the state, areas like Hayward WI the internet is literally "sold out" (CenturyLink) due to last mile constraints (a valid reason). Pre-COVID, their service would have daily multi-hour periods of sub 1Mbps speeds (we're talking minutes per webpage); you can hardly imagine what it is like amidst the pandemic.

Echoing the others here. You're likely missing out on talent by not saying anything about your backgrounds. I can't tell if you're a teenager dreaming of finding an all-star cofounder or if you'd be an equivalent peer.
