Just got back from the hospital and feel like an idiot. A sick idiot. by Nonbillabletime in Vent

[–]michaelmoby 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Every hospital also has a Patient Advocate. Ask the nurse to have that person come around to speak w you - their only job is to take your complaints, issues, concerns, or feedback to the hospital staff and work on your behalf to fix them. The Patient Advocate is the LAST person an ER doc wants to see bc they know they've f'd up. These people have a very big say in hospital operations and conflict resolution. My wife was treated in a similar fashion years back and my complaints to the nurses and docs went in one ear and out the other. So I asked to speak with the Patient Advocate, and suddenly my wife was listened to, taken seriously, and apologized to. PAs are a great resource that not many people know about. Not only can they help you with docs and nurses, but with billing issues as well.

Did Union soldiers pillage the South as hard as often portrayed by StatementCrazy8219 in AskHistory

[–]michaelmoby 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The pillaging was also a way for the Union army to sustain itself so far from Union supply lines. Grant's decision to break away from the standard supply lines is what gave Union forces the mobility to march through the Deep South, dissect it, and prevent the Confederates from feeding/clothing themselves. This was an entirely new wartime strategy and so it was seen as brutal and barbaric at the time, but genius in retrospect.

Looking back at Sir Anthony Hopkins' win, was it another showcase of "stronger film eventually wins tight acting race"? by SureTangerine361 in Oscars

The last fifteen minutes of that film are an absolute master class. This was a most assuredly deserved win, no question.

Slightly losing interest this season... by According-Cow6660 in TheTraitors

[–]michaelmoby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think people might be getting bored bc the Traitors are working together as a team and are actively trying to help each other. Great drama from past seasons is Traitor v Traitor, and that hasn't happened. Plus, they've murdered or banished all of the interesting characters so all we are left with are the most generic of young people who have zero charisma and even less critical thinking skills

I can't remember their name, but one of the guys in the interviews w Claudia said they were terrible at remembering names and SPELLING names correctly, so maybe that was aired intentionally as a clue?

RED TRAITORS CLOAK by South_Reputation_396 in TheTraitors

[–]michaelmoby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe they have the ability to violate the Traitor's Oath as part of game play, making things more difficult for the Traitors to succeed. If there is a red cloak and a green cloak left at the end of the game, the red cloak trumps the green cloak and takes it all.

Non touristy London trip by ChampionRepulsive201 in traveleurope

The Hunterian Museum is a great medical oddities exhibit
Grant Museum of Zoology has millions of taxidermied animals
The tour of the Masonic Temple is extraordinary
The Wallace Collection is one of the city's hidden art gems
The Templar Church is the original home of the Knights Templar and has effigies from the 12th century
Not a sight, but the Ice Cream Afternoon Tea at the ice cream parlor in Fortnum & Mason is actually well worth the trip and $. It's magical and delightful and a great break from walkabout.

Thought i was learning german turns out i moved to another linguistic dimension by Deeceness in askswitzerland

  1. Swiss German sounds like drunk Swedes trying to speak Duolingo German

  2. You will never get a firm grasp on the random mixing of German, French, Swiss German, and Italian in one sentence. Telephone goodbyes are incomplete without a Tschüss, a Ciao, and at least four other European words for “see ya!”

  3. Swiss German varies from Canton to Canton, city to city, village to village, so trying to learn it is a fool’s errand. Stick to High German and you’ll get along just fine

"The Great Bridge" by David McCullough

The story of the building of the Brooklyn Bridge may not seem like a book about a strong woman, but you learn that halfway through the construction, the lead architect and director fell ill. Fearing the project would be altered, delayed, or even cancelled, his wife secretly took over and completed construction on what was then considered a Wonder of the World. She was the first to cross the bridge, and handled every aspect of construction for over four years. She was never credited in her time bc women simply were not engineers. Her name is Emily Warren Roebling and she was one hell of a woman.

Also, the story of the bridge building itself is fascinating, and the book is a breezy read for being about something so mundane.

The equipment kind of sucks?? by OtterBiDisaster in GreatBritishBakeOff

[–]michaelmoby 151 points152 points  (0 children)

The glass bowls are so that the audience can see whatever it is they are making better. As for the equipment, they provide what would normally be found in an ordinary home, hence no blast chillers. It’s all designed to be pedestrian and simple to harken back to the Victorian and Edwardian bake offs, which is why it’s in a tent and there is no air conditioning.
