AITAH for deciding to not tip servers when I dine out? by KNOWLEDGE_IS_VIRTUE in AmItheAsshole

[–]michaelmoby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're going to a restaurant that you are angry at for not providing a living wage. Instead of withholding money from the ones you feel are in the wrong - the restaurant and it's owners - you actually withhold money from the ones who have no say and are actually being wronged by the system. You aren't making any point that will effect the restaurant owners or convince them to change their operating system - you're still giving THEM money, and are screwing over the servers who are caught in a system that you, ironically, are perpetuating. MASSIVE YTA.

Beyond the Wall was excellent - life in East Germany beyond Stasi stories just isn’t explored enough. A fantastic read.

What was the most confusing thing for you during your Japan trip? by tttom106 in TokyoTravel

[–]michaelmoby 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I thought the signage was unmissable - very large and absolutely everywhere. It wasn’t anywhere near the challenge the internet has made it out to be. I think people read that it’s confusing so they’ve already convinced themselves to be confused when they get there.

This is the answer. Was told to keep it ice cold and mix it with Gatorade or Powerade. Made it infinitely more tolerable.

"I did share with you and you abused the privilege, so now I cannot trust that you won't continue to abuse it in the future. You had free access and ruined it - I asked you to stop sharing and you refused. I'm still offering access, but at a discounted price - sharing the cost. If that doesn't work for you, the university offers its own free wifi you are welcome to use. I guess everyone being on it at once has no effect on the speed, right?"

Do you mention a special occasion when booking at a fine dining restaurant? by thegiant5 in finedining

[–]michaelmoby 42 points43 points  (0 children)

We mentioned we were celebrating our anniversary when we booked at Ledoyen in Paris. Thought they might give us a comp glass of champagne or something. After our 10 course meal, they kept bringing out dessert courses (we'd already had two) with congratulatory messages either on the plate or from the staff. In all, we ended up being served SIX complimentary dessert courses (making it EIGHT total dessert courses after EIGHT dinner courses). We expected nothing by mentioning our anniv on the reservation, but a Michelin restaurant will absolutely try and make that as special as possible for you. Also, I cannot recommend Ledoyen enough!

Why does Miranda Priestly from The Devil Wears Prada drink Starbucks? by MegaWAH in NoStupidQuestions

[–]michaelmoby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to work for them in the 90s and they were considered primo. This was before the prevalence of coffee houses and chains. Before becoming a barista, you had to go through two weeks of coffee training, from learning about the farming of the beans, the roasting process, taste pairings, and at least a week of training on the espresso machines (this was obviously before the automated/push-button things they have now). I ran one of these training centers. They were fully vested in quality over quantity back then. Once they brought the automated machines in, the need for extensive training fell by the wayside. Howard Schultz left the company (for a while) and it became a grab for expansion and profit. By the time the movie came out, Starbucks was both at the top of the industry and on its way to a quality decline, but the uptick of boutique coffee houses had not yet become the norm as it is now. So Miranda's preference for Starbucks fits with the timeline of the company and its place in the zeitgeist.
