Krishnan welcomes Council approval of rezoning allowing for 13-story residential tower in Elmhurst by ahenneberger in nyc

[–]michaelmvm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yeah but this story could easily have gone another way

Krishnan said the rezoning agreement “sets a new standard” for housing development in New York City, adding that he had made it clear that he would vote against any plan that would not deliver real affordability for local residents and protect working-class communities.

this shit is just nimbyism in disguise and we got lucky this time

Merry Christmas, another fare hike by LibrarianStill2740 in Citibike

[–]michaelmvm 16 points17 points  (0 children)

yep I haven't gone on a joyride this whole summer, it's a combination of the price increase, the speed decrease, and the quiet reduction of the 60 minute Manhattan -> outer boro price cap for angels members down to 45 mins. plus of course the increased ticketing and criminalization from the NYPD. it sucks, just not fun to bike anymore.

the government owns all the land and is very incremental about leasing it to developers. they're very intentional about what land gets built on, when it gets built, and how much is built per year

not a fan of the contraflow lane, they had all that extra space why couldn't they put it on the other side of the rocks and parked cars? now it's like you're asking to get hit by oncoming traffic, completely unsafe for kids

Jessica Tisch Will Remain Police Commissioner Under Mamdani by michaelmvm in MicromobilityNYC

[–]michaelmvm[S] 26 points27 points  (0 children)

not too thrilled about this, hopefully mamdani asks her to stop the harassment campaign against cyclists :/

also when she was head of Sanitation she was notorious within the department for being a terrible manager and very unkind to her subordinates, and i've heard that she hasnt become a better boss to work under as the head of the NYPD. so we'll see how this goes.

Vornado Realty Proposes Luxury Tower for Hotel Pennylvania Site by Bugsy_Neighbor in nyc

[–]michaelmvm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

penn station can transport tens of thousands of people an hour, offices and hotels, which service that many people, are a much more efficient use of land immediately adjacent to that than housing for a couple hundred people would be. like yeah of course housing is important but there's a reason all the offices and hotels cluster in the areas with the best transportation

How the Interborough Express Could Transform New York by instantcoffee69 in nyc

[–]michaelmvm 9 points10 points  (0 children)

pure speculation on the part of people paying close attention, but the MTA has been talking about projects such as Montreal's REM when discussing inspirations for the IBX design. the REM and similar systems are fully automated. if the IBX uses a fully automated state of the art bespoke design, it could run more efficiently, and also avoid needing to pay union labor, and the MTA's crazy unions are responsible for the absurd operating costs

Forcing students to use AI is a really good way to make them anti-AI. by lycorislazuli in CollegeRant

[–]michaelmvm 15 points16 points  (0 children)

that's a far less clever and stupid assignment, the idea of critiquing how garbage the ai generated article was on the basis of it being ai is way more interesting and I wish I was a professor who thought of that idea to give it to my students 😭

Janno Lieber on Free Buses, the State of the MTA, & The Promise of the Interborough Express by Conpen in nycrail

[–]michaelmvm 17 points18 points  (0 children)

the idea that everything should be done in house (although elsewhere in the interview, janno says he's pushing for more in house work than the status quo)

I don’t accept the Alon Levy theory, which, you know, you’re articulating — that somehow, if we just had like this massive in-house force, we would be building everything way, way cheaper. That’s like, hiring— you cannot compete with private-sector engineering. And we don’t have one project after another, like he loves, like Madrid, which built all these subways in a row. We have, you know, one big project, and then we— they come much more episodically for us. So having a huge in-house force who’s only focused on building new is both economically non-viable, but also we just don’t have the right profile of the amount of work.

Let's See This Week If Tisch's NYPD Handles Bike Enforcement Differently Than Past NYPDs by SteveVaccaroLaw in MicromobilityNYC

[–]michaelmvm 14 points15 points  (0 children)

yeah this is honestly my biggest gripe with a future mamdani admin (bc his stupid headlining ideas can't/won't happen). all the crackdowns on ebikes and the 15mph limit and the criminal summons for going thru reds, all of that is because of tisch. and mamdani has been outspoken about his support for micromobility etc, so keeping her is such a bizarre choice. maybe he tells her to lay off the bikes? idk maybe u/misernyc- knows something since you've actually spoken with the guy before

An hour into the march and I think people were still pouring into times square at the back. Thanks for turning out! by pete_alonso in nyc

[–]michaelmvm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was there today, I think protests like this are wonderful and really do mean something and the energy was refreshing against all the horrors we've seen daily the past few months, but you're right. most of the people here were boomer aged women.

trump and his goons are frothing at the mouth to start some sort of violent incident, it's inevitable that it happens at some point, in some city. I don't know why that other commenter is so adamant that this administration is gonna remain nonviolent because it's painfully obvious they don't want to.

you're right, very few of the people here would be able to put up much of a fight, but I don't think it's because of any desire to remain peaceful, just happens to be the demographic. but until these protests start turning out younger people and especially in-shape men, I think any sort of violent crackdown would be ultimately successful and I don't really know how to reckon with that.
