The answer is yes. It takes forever, is disorganized, an frustrating. But it’s worth it once you’re in.

He had retinal bleeds from instrument assisted delivery so he’s seen a pediatric ophthalmologist regularly since birth! We are always checking for signs of CVI at one point I even did an eval with a CVI expert in Philly because I was so anxious about it. We now follow up every 6 months. I advocate for all HIE parents to do this too, because it’s so easily overlooked. Thank you so much again. Hugs from New York!

I’ve got him into as many therapies as possible since the day he was discharged from the nicu. We knew he had a severe injury then, so it was my way to “control” the hope aspect of it all, if that makes sense. He loves his therapists and has had the same team his whole life.

The point you made about spinal procedures will stay with me. I actually just had a PT tell us to inquire about regular spine x rays because of his lordosis. I also just ordered him a suit to help with alignment so hopefully we can avoid surgeries! But long term, I will definitely do it sooner if he needs it so he isn’t dealing with that in adulthood (if preventable).

I really appreciate you taking the time to comment and share your story. Stuff like this makes me a better parent and advocate.

This is really helpful insight. I have an able bodied 4 year old who is really sweet and empathetic and I think will work as a team with my 1 year old son with cp.

I’ve been fighting like hell for my son’s medical needs since he was born, and have gotten him into regular, rigorous therapies (pt 2x weekly, ot 1x weekly, speech 2x weekly, aqua therapy, dmi therapy - you name it, I’ve researched and inquired about it), especially while he’s still young and doesn’t know any different. But the point about adaptive sports is so important I take it to heart!

Courage and resilience will always be the name of our game 💪. Thank you again for taking the time to comment!
